    I have an open Bible published in 1983 that I purchased close to then. It’s NKJV in genuine brown leather. For some reason it got shelved and I just found it again. I went through it again and enjoyed it. It must of been one of the best reference bibles of it’s time. Thanks for the review.

    I really wish Thomas Nelson would put the Cyclopedia index and list of prophecies of Christ in their Premier Collection. To me that should be standard.

      The Nkjv is much better than the kjv release. ..I still prefer the older 1985 expanded and 1990 study edition myself. I'm happy they still make the Open Bible it's one of my faves.
      IMO there really isn't a reason to pay so much for their leather version . I'd love to see a premier edition , they are doing that with the Thompson in May from what I can tell.

      Thanks for the comment...
      The NKJV editions that they released first had really good paper and print.
      The KJV edition came out later it was totally different quality, the redletter was pink and the paper has a gray dingy look too it.
      I hope your NLJV still has the better text block. That's one thing I don't like about reviewing mass produced China made Nelson bibles. These companies tend to get whatever paper they can for lowest cost in my opinion. It makes reviewing bibles very difficult...Let me know if your bible looks the same cause its been 3+ years now since they came out so I'm interested in seeing their current product quality.

      th-cam.com/video/bv70T90FsK8/w-d-xo.html
      In 1990 the Study Edition was released in large print. They stopped making the original Open bible in 79. The new one today is the Expanded edition but it is missing the archeological supplement .
      I wish they kept making the Study Edition it had better print and cool picture charts also theydded word studies to the typical index .

    Retains everything it had before? I ordered one and look forward to receiving it but have the 1983 NKJV Open Bible and there is a difference in the MAPS at the end in that the new one does not have an index to the maps. Disappointed they did not have that in this version. I have had the OPEN bible I currently own since Feb. 1986 in Genuine leather but it now has tape on the binding - very used.

    • @Airik1111bibles
      @Airik1111bibles  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a watered down "clean " and modern version. The new Open has lost its soul.
      I'm happy the text lives on but I rather have an older version which there are plenty around on ebay.
      It's worthy of rebinding if someone has the money to throw at it. For me I like the old genuine leather smyth sewn 80's expanded edition.
      The same company just purchased the Thompson chain copyright so they will water down that bible too.
      I'm guessing much of the Thompson Chains goodies and pictures will be tossed out for a more generic text wrapped up in a soft pretty leather cover....ho hum😔

    I heard that the new Open Bible the text of scripture is line matched but not everything else?

    • @Airik1111bibles
      @Airik1111bibles  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's pretty much line matched , it's not perfect but for a study bible it's better than the other 99% out there. I'm not big on perfectly line matched text , it makes my Bible feel like a generic school book . I do understand it's a big deal to many readers so I know im in the minority. Unfortunately for me it sanitized everything and has made it really visually boring.
      If paper wasn't produced like it is nowadays line matching wouldn't be as necessary.
      I do think the new Open Bible is great and I'm happy it's still around but, I prefer the older version esp the index layout.

      I have an Open Bible dated 1997 purchased after seeing your video reviews; it seems that in the new one there aren't some features: word study in the cyclopedic index, short study notes at the bottom of every page, visual study aids such as "The garden of Eden", "Roman crucifixion" etc..., Archaeological discoveries at the end of the bible. Besides, print in my copy seems larger than that in the new one@@Airik1111bibles

      No you are not wrong , I never ended up using that bible . Honestly I just found a 1988 edition in almost mint condition on ebay I paid a fair price for it and it was worth every penny.
      I've always wanted a regular size 80s edition cause my large print is to big for regular use.
      I do not like the new ones , the layout is generic and sanitized like a school book. That print is not comfortable on my eyes at all esp cause my eyes have aged alot since I reviewed that bible.
      I don't recommend the new ones , I'd try finding an older one in good shape before they all disappear.

      From one geek to another, you ain't losing anything by buying the imitation edion. I haven't seen their other covers but I personally would buy the low cost myself. This particular style of cover is not my thing, I'm sure many folks will like it but genuine leather paste downs need to be more sturdy and thick. The paper is the same stuff that Holman is using now for their CSB thinline largprints but slightly thicker, it's very flat with no glare with easy to turn pages. As for the print ...its very small I think its more like 8.5 than a 9 BUT it reads like a bold 9.5 font.
      I read the bible a bit in bed with just the lamp light holding the bible on my lap just to see if I could read it comfortably, it was actually nice to see. I honestly would like to see a large print edition once they make sales on this edition and get feed back from readers I think this will be the #1 complaint. Even with it being readable its still something ya don't want to be thankful for LOL..like "Boy I'm sure glad I can still read this" 😂
      I'd much prefer a bigger font so I can say " WOW its so easy to read"😉

      The text is great I love changes but still would like to see a premium in their goatskin , even a limited run would be cool. The calfskin is nice but pretty thin esp on the spine which I will share after a bit of use. Its not firm enough to hold its shape which is why ribs are important IMO.

    My Favorite Bible of all and NKJV LOVE! I need a new one too, my old one is really showing the cracks in the bonded leather. This is gorgeous, it’s Great seeing how they have kept the main concept the same but highly improved it! Thanks for the great review Brother, as always! 😍🤗✝️🙏📖💖💗😁

      @Airik1111bibles  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Its pretty cool, I was a bit shocked at first cause that print is tiny it kind of freaks you out. After taking a deep breath I began looking though it and comparing the print to the old ones, its better.
      Yes its small and I think a large print should be considered for a future release BUT honestly its very readable . The center column references really worked good I was VERY happy with that. My only cons for the text are the missing page numbers in the topical section and archeological section being taken out.
      Construction wise the spine either needs ribbing or thicker backing my spine is a bit wonky cause the leather is to soft it needs support. I'm trying to train the spine to just cave in cause it looks really sad LOL. Also the gilding is a weird satin shade instead of a shiny sparkling gold?
      Its a study bible not a premium so I didn't add much about these issues in my video. Some folks in the bible review world can get way to snobby about these things, I'm very happy with this face lift it looks great.

      @@Airik1111bibles Hmm..after about a month of use, I've noticed that the leather on mine is a bit on the stiff side. It's definitely real leather, but it feels thin and not very soft at all. Another reviewer mentioned it had the same leather as the preaching Bible from Thomas Nelson, but I saw one of those in person at the store yesterday and it feels noticeably softer and thicker. It felt and looked totally different from the leather on mine. I'm beginning to think Thomas Nelson since they are made in China, are skimping out on the leather quality. Maybe the one I have is pigskin or cowhide, it doesn't feel like calfskin, your's looks more like the preaching bible leather. Who knows...hope TN stays consistent with there quality control...I just recently picked up their premier KJV and had to send it back for a replacement because of quality issues as well.

    Great review! I like those improvements & I'm glad you're happy with the redesign. I know you were anxious about it. It's been about 25 years since I owned an Open Bible, and the one I had -- if I recall correctly -- had some passages underlined (right from the publisher). I didn't see any underlining in your copy. Did they stop doing that at some point, or is my memory faulty?

    • @Airik1111bibles
      @Airik1111bibles  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep you're correct brother.
      The underlines were added to the original printing of the expanded edition. The current Open KJV with the black cover also has them so its a printing from the early day and its really bad . I only bought mine because a few ISBN #s escaped the factory with Smyth sewn bindings😂
      My 1988 NKJV edition that is like your red largprint doesn't have underlines in it either. The underlines were used for the 7 Topic Guide To A New Life study which I think worked well when using that system.
      I'm happy with what they did , moving forward with a redesign is risky and hard with such a loved bible. For me I prefer the old one but I tried to keep my bias out and focus on the improvements. The older printing was still good, IMO its the bad paper and horrible cheap printing quality that causes it to look outdated. If they used the same ink and paper like they have with the old printing, people would still appreciate it.
      Honestly the old Open Bible would do great if Nelson did what Oxford does with the Scofield....Offering both edition, the Old Scofield and Scofield 3😉

    • @Airik1111bibles
      @Airik1111bibles  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was wrong on my last comment , its the 1998-03 Open Bible Study Edition that has no lines all the other ones have them. Its really wonky cause the 77-80 editions had a different study tool and I think they might have added lines somewhere during that time but the Expanded edition has them. I think if the 1998-03 edition had a Smyth sewn binding I'd be happy with it, they were very unique and full of way more studies and pictures. The paper was pretty good but they fall apart and lose pages with normal use.

      @@Airik1111bibles - It seems like it's hard for publishers to distinguish improved quality from needless change. The black leathersoft has an impressive cover. I have other Bibles with whiter paper, but I love the premium paper used--which can easily be turned from page to page. The red is in fact dark and easy on the eyes. My only qualm is the print is quite small...compared to another Bible I have in 9 point, this one is definitely smaller. Agreed the print is to small I hope they will address this and come out with a large print version. I know most folks with normal vision can read it but not those with vision problems. Its more like an 8.5 font but like you said the boldness or dark ink makes it read larger.

      Me ...or the bible 😁....
      If it's the bible...
      I don't use it, still have it but it's not my cup of tea. Print is to small and the charecter of the original Open has been lost. It's a clean text book very "perfect" layout but I guess im a bit punk rock old school and like imperfect bible layouts 😆
      If it is me...
      I'm good, just not into reviewing Bibles anymore for many reasons. I mainly lost my love for it cause of the new marketing . Everything started feeling the same. Nothing was unique anymore. I still love good quality built bibles, but I refuse to spend $200 and now $300+ for a bible.
      I do still like finding old bibles mainly pre 1995, the 50s through the 80s were the golden years for bible design, in my opinion. I miss the old genuine leather tough bibles that didn't cost ya an arm an leg to purchase. I began to realize just how over marketed the word of God had become.
      I don't knock folks who still collect or love buying a new super nice bible each month.
      I still might return and share a bible again but unless God gives me the desire I think my review days here are done.
      I do review knives at Airiks Knife reviews...Just a hobby to keep sane .

    Yay the moment has finally arrived!! My cloth over board cover comes on Thursday. I figured that that would be a safe bet and was able to use my Amazon Prime rewards toward it. I’m sure TN is testing the reception of this new release and hopefully it will be well received by more than just us Open Bible geeks. Will they market it like it’s new offerings? Anyway if it does well hopefully there will be more selections in the future. Do they still include the archaeological section? Anyway my initial impression is that I will thoroughly enjoy this bible because of how uncluttered and clear the print is and sewn binding. But my editions from ‘75-96 I’m holding on to lol!!!!

    • @Airik1111bibles
      @Airik1111bibles  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope no archeological section anymore, it was pretty small so I'm not surprised. The print and layout is going to be big for most newbies cause of how dated the old nelson font has become. Personally I think the 1998-02 Study Edition still is the best one to have for the extra articles and pics but since its only glued ya have to be carful with them.
      The new one used the same Visual Survey from the 98 but added darker colors that's a plus, the font is small but reads larger. And one big change for me is the page number in the topical encyclopedia has been removed? Don't know why they chose to do that but really its very nice and any new life being breathed into the Open is awesome😁

    • @PastaPat60
      @PastaPat60 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Airik1111 that’s a great way to put it ‘new life breathed in’ yeah that’s kinda interesting with taking out the page numbers in the Cyclopedic index. With the glut of study bibles available and new ones launched every minute, I hope there is an audience of younger Christians who will want and appreciate a bible where scripture supports scripture not just visuals, commentary and articles. I love those too but those won’t be the Bible’s I keep forever probably. Maybe if this run is well received Nelson will add more like the Study/expanded editions of the past. I forgot that my NLT version is 1998 Study edition. Love, love, love this bible but can’t tell if it glued or sewn.

      I will give an update on this bible after some use for a bit, for now I really like what they did but would love a limited edition premium run like they have of their other bibles. The Open would sale very well in a premium run but I think they might be testing the market to see how it does with the new design. The main changes like Smyth Sewn binding and amazing print (its really good ink darkness) plus thicker paper is what matters most and they nailed it for me. I would love to see larger print and little changes but for now its a study bible not a premium so folks must focus on those things . Junkies like me can be a bit to judgmental when reviewing normal non premium bibles LOL😁

      Yes that is a con, the Open Bible has always had small print but I really would have liked a couple sizes up. It does read like a larger font but you are right for those with eye issues its a bummer but even with good eyes you still get tired much quicker with small fonts.
      Since this is their first run with the New Open I'm hoping Nelson will listen to the customers and make a large print edition. I'm hoping sales do well so that this bible can stay current and not fall off the radar again.

      @Gypsys Friend Its very small but I've put it next to other bibles that people seem to not complain about and its way better esp the Thompson Chain. I also have this same issue with the text but I think it has more to do with the spacing of the type. I get almost dizzy feeling with some of these new 2k Denmark fonts even when its large font, I think the perfect line spacing can actually make sentences all blend to those who have this problem and then it strains our eyes.

    • @Airik1111bibles
      @Airik1111bibles  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Open Bible, the Thompson is a great bible system and I think having one is beneficial BUT ...
      The New Open Bible is a better all around study bible and has way better print plus the paper is great stuff. Thompson has been a bit of a mess and esp the KJV edition, the red is way to light pink but their ESV is much better now so I hope we will see this for all of their bibles.
      I highly recommend the Open Bible esp this new edition in genuine leather, but if you buy the lower cost you're still getting the same quality bible just a cheaper cover.

      That's why I share bibles with people , bible studies will be a blast for ya the topical index is so good. Another cool thing is that the older ones are still fun to collect, you might like to find an old one down the road.
      Have fun with your studies and thanks for letting me know how it turned out for ya, its a blessing 😉

    I wonder why they dont offer a KJV edition of the new Open Bible?

    • @Airik1111bibles
      @Airik1111bibles  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thomas Nelson is the publisher of the NKJV, the original Open Expanded Edition was their flagship release of the NKJV.
      They will have the KJV eventually, each new format is a huge project, this is why Kirkbrides Thompson Chain KJV hasn't been updated.
      The kJV doesn't have a publisher pushing it with huge money behind it so each publisher has to reach into their own pocket to update the layout and formats.

      Its nice but that print is really smll, its readable and dark but I don't know why they chose to go that small. I'm hoping they now do a large print cause my eyes are getting a bit wonky.
      I have an issue with the cover design not having ribs which I will bring up after a little use this week. If I bought one myself I would buy a imitation cover or maybe even a hard back esp considering the price difference. Some of my views can be to premium minded so I really tried to see the bible from an average Joes eyes and without my fanboy bias getting in the way. I'm guessing you might have seen what I seen about the cover design.
