    With a longbow, a longbow versus a re-curve bow, a re-curve traditional bow is basically the same as a longbow. The only difference is, again, that this has a re-curve to the limb, where a longbow has a straight limb. It's not much of a difference, but a lot of people like to think that they are distinctively different bows and in some ways, they are because a longbow is shot a little bit different than a re-curve.
    The way you hold a longbow, because a longbow is shot off of the shelf and does not have an arrow hook or an arrow rest on it, a long bow has to be held at a 45 degree angle, so that the arrow actually sits in the shelf and it cradles in the V of the shelf. So the longbow is always held at a 45 degree angle. When you pull a longbow back into your anchoring position, that remains basically the same as a re-curve. You pull it back and you anchor it somewhere on your face, whether it be your cheek, your mouth, your chin.
    Whether you put your fingers right underneath the arrow or down below the arrow determines where the arrow will hit at different distances. But the way it basically looks is that when you pull back a longbow at a 45 degree angle, you simply pull it back and anchor it. You pull it back and anchor it. And then, using the tip of the arrow to aim with, you shoot. And basically, that's the only difference.

    • @JubbaheyChannel
      @JubbaheyChannel 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, its not a longbow, there are many styles of bow, longbow is of one design, no shelf, no sights, no recurve shape where the string lays on the arms to any degree.
      Your bow is probably a recurve or even a compound and is one of the styles they shoot at Olympic level.

  • @PigsCanTooFly
    @PigsCanTooFly 11 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    As a long bow shooter, you do not need to have a shelf or hold the bow at a 45 degree angle. There's just a proportion of archers that shoot like that. What about Victorian based shooters? Warbow?? I use my hand as their version of a "shelf". Plus if long bow archers want to shoot with their eyes closed they probably could. Most of the aiming is done with legs and body position and has little to do with where you're looking, I mean think of long bow speed shooting, if they needed to adjust to look per arrow, it just wouldn't be feasible......

      @kevinreicks6251 11 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with what you are saying and I have seen other erroneous info from this channel. However, I do like the guy said the only real difference is the length and the recurve is not magical.

    • @recless8667
      @recless8667 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Truth be told, there is a fair amount of difference in terms of efficiency. Recurves and reflex/deflex bows have better power curves, leading to more joules of energy imparted to an arrow than a longbow at the same weight and draw length. You'll get greater range and FPS from a recurve or reflex/deflex than you will with a longbow. It's not a HUGE boost though (5-10%?), so if you're just shooting paper, you won't notice it; shooting game at 60 yards up an incline, on the other hand..
      Recurves and reflex/deflex also store more energy than a longbow at a given length, which is why they are typically shorter and consequentially have shorter draw lengths before it stacks (the primary factor of maximum draw length is the length of the limbs).

    • @kevinreicks6251
      @kevinreicks6251 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rory Christel. I guess I was inferring on the reflex/deflex bows. You can make a deflex bow move the same as a reflex one if you make it with the correct geometries. Also, I have been doing research off and on over the last several months and I think what we know of as "longbow" is a modern thing that started in the 19th century. I am well aware that this flies in the face of a lot of opinions out there, but that is my own amateur opinion and I say it with respect to others and admit that I could be wrong.

    Very cool vid. Thanks for the tips!

  • @d0nj03
    @d0nj03 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    There is an important difference and he seems oblivious to it: a recurve has a certain draw length beyond which it quickly gets very hard to open it up any further (so a recurve that is too short for your personal draw length can really hurt your fingers and your accuracy), whereas for a longbow it just gets linearly harder to draw it, there's no point where it suddenly takes much more force than before (so you can still shoot it pretty well even if it's not correctly sized for you).

    • @recless8667
      @recless8667 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Both kinds of bows have a maximum draw length (the point where the bow begins to "stack").
      The draw length of a given bow is based on it's limb length; recurve and reflex/deflex bows have by nature more stored energy than longbows, so a longbow of a given length will typically be weaker than a recurve of the same length.
      Given a recurve and a longbow of the same poundage, the recurve will in most cases be a much shorter bow, and therefore it's maximum draw length will be shorter than the longbow. In all but extreme cases, most longbows made for adults have a maximum draw length greater than the draw length any archer will use. Longer recurve and reflex/deflex bows will have the same trait, but shorter ones and most horse bows may begin to stack with taller shooters.

    • @d0nj03
      @d0nj03 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Stacking occurs due to the change in thickness from the tips to the grip of the bow. Recurve designs often have a very thick grip section and limbs that get visibly thicker toward the grip end, which make them stack earlier than longbows. Many longbows, being a more traditional design, will simply be made out of a single continuous piece of wood, without less difference in thickness and no difference in material from the tips to the grip section, and will thus tend to offer linearly increasing resistance and to stack very late, allowing for much more comfortable shooting - this is what beginners should use.
      Also, it's not the height of the shooter that matters in this, it's the armspan - they're not equal or even particularly well correlated. I'm 5'6" and have an armspan exceeding 5'9" for example. They gave me a 68" 30# "Step One" recurve expecting I would be able to shoot it without any problems and it was the worst bow I had ever shot; then I got a 68" 35# traditional longbow and it was a pleasure to shoot it despite the extra 5#, just because I didn't feel it stacking before I reached my draw length.

    WHERE ARE THE 4 tips ?

  • @muzza6007
    @muzza6007 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    A traditional recurve bow is generally shot off the shelf too! Cantering the bow at a slight angle can help with instinctive shooting but it may depend on a number of things, ha ha yes it is confusing flat bows, long bows, off shelf or no shelf, I have a number of bows, two recurves both I shoot off the shelf, one is 55 pounds Bear Kodiak Magnum hunting bow and the other is a 40 pound Samik Sage I use for target practice, but can put arrow rests on them if I wish, I also have another training fiberglass bow 30 pounds no shelf just shoot off the hand, now it has no recurve limbs so is that a flat bow or a long bow? I agree a long bow but hey why get caught up on this get into Archery and have fun I say.

    There is two differences you can Aim Instinctively too, the tip of the arrow will not make it to the target unless you position the arrow straight in front of your eye lol. Unless your pulling a 10# bow then you can lift it up and look at it from EYE LEVEL. lol

    drawing a longbow at a 45 degree angle will cause you to twist the string a little causing a very bad release. to tilt the bow, you do not tilt by using your wrist. you tilt the bow by keeping arms and head in right position and just bend the top half of your body. like taking a bow. thats what an instinctive archer does. watch GRAY archers vids. hes good

  • @bipolarbear69
    @bipolarbear69 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    (flatbow, longbow don't care) Longbows are more forgiving and silent then recurves, most longbows are cut before center which means deduct 5 pounds of bow weight of the spine of the arrow. Most recurves are cut to and past center which means you can use stiffer arrows, D shape longbows are slower but reflex deflex longbows provide more FPS, that's it.
    Idk why none of this was explained

    • @JubbaheyChannel
      @JubbaheyChannel 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thats ghost gap aiming, looking at the target but aware of the tip (not focused on) and where it is laying on the backdrop. Its useful for beginners of longbow at long distances to get height right, but at 30m you're more likely to hit yellow just by pointing at target and instinctively loosing the arrow when focused on bullseye.

    Seriously, don't listen to this guy. A traditional recurve, and a longbow is shot exactly the same way, and not in a 45 degree angle. More like 15-20 degree angle, but can be shot upright as well. The difference between Recurve and longbow is overall length and shot speed. A recurve is faster with same draw weight. The shorter bow also is less forgiving if you make mistakes, as the limbs travel the same distance faster, and the shorter overall length amplified your motions.

  • @unclemikeb

    If a bow has no sight, the only point of reference would be the tip of the arrow.

    • @JubbaheyChannel
      @JubbaheyChannel 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, not quite correct, it takes some practice but an archer becomes aware of the orientation of the arrow and bow and uses that as a reference point but is totally focused on the yellow bull and never on the arrow. Shooting from between 20yds close range to 300yds requires many years of practice to become affective enough to be in an army.

    ugh long bows are LONG BOWS because they are TALLER than their user not because they don't have a curve.

    • @Motorsheep
      @Motorsheep 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bouvard C. I don't know exactly why longbows are called longbows, but it's NOT because they're taller than their user. How tall (or long) they are depends on their draw length, and that depends on the archer's arms. Those are, of course, roughly proportional to the archer's height, but a longbow is usually actually a bit shorter than the archer, not taller. E.g. I am 5'11" (or 1.78m) and my longbow is 68", or 5'8"

    • @SagesFury
      @SagesFury 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Long bows are called long bows because they get most of thier power by storing energy over a large area. To maximize power the English made their bows very large. Many historical accounts esp. From the hundred years war put the lengthy of the bow around 5 1/2 to just under 6 ft long . Since you are an archer u will understand that even if a bow were to be taller than you it would not mean the bottom of the bow will hit the ground because the bow is held held in the middle. Add the fact that the average hight of men was much shorter back in the late middle ages even a 5'6" bow could be considered taller than most people. In a modern sense I guess I was incorrect in saying long bows must be taller than their users. Don't remember why I hated this video but I don't care to rewatch anymore. Just from the picture that does not resemble a traditional English long bow

    • @Motorsheep
      @Motorsheep 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bouvard C. Heh. That makes a hell of a lot of sense. Thanks for educating me :). I've only just gotten into archery half a year ago, and in a place where there's no support for the sport at all. An island with no clubs, nothing. So all I learn about it, I learn from the internet.
      Which brings me to this video:
      This dude doesn't seem to know too much about what he's doing, saying things like you need to hold a longbow at a 45° angle because you're shooting only from a shelf, not an arrow rest. That's probably why you didn't like it :)
