Leontyne Price is a gift to not only opera, but also music and this universe. Not that hitting notes is a valid measure of musicianship, but Leontyne was able to hit a B5 at 81. Leontyne’s voice is outstandingly beautiful and incredible. For her to give such high praise to Mariah is great.

They didn’t train together. Why can you not train with someone younger than you? It isn’t that you can’t, it’s just that it isn’t likely. It’s like if you have a sibling that’s say 8 years younger. You don’t ever go to school together because you’re in different stages of development.

Personally, I always found Leontyne Price overrated. There were far better American sopranos like Shirley Verrett and Maria Callas, who had a more solid chest voice, better acting skills, and superior sense of musicality and artistry. Price, like the overated Sutherland, had that woofy nasal sound that always bothered me. "Singing around the mask." I don't see wtf Renee Fleming saw in her, but then again, Flemming is overrated too. Yes, Price's high notes in Aida were pleasant, but she was very one dimentional, only producing beautiful tone, but zero character and ability to color the voice accordingly the role. Her diction was also very mushed, her low notes weak, and she had an almost non-existent coloratura. And she most definitely was not a spinto. Her voice wasn't large enough to sing the climax of Tosca, Leanora, etc.

Renata Tebaldi roasts Renata Scotto in an interview- also mentioning young sopranos who sang like a mosquito in a role that is supposed to be for dramatic sopranos like Milanov, Ponselle, Boninsegna, and Nilson. Zinka Milanov did not even applause for the performance of Marilyn Horne because she sings as if she is breathing, have you ever heard Horne's chest voice, lol. If you want a better singer for the role of what Saint-Saens had created, try Ebe Stignani and Bruna Castagna. Again, opera is not for crybabies. Personally, as noted also by TIO, the prime cause of this are voice teachers who think chest voice belongs only to Mezzo and Contralto. Look at Garanca and Didonato, they think they are mezzos where they can still improve their voices to become dramatic and lyric sopranos, respectively.

The first one, was my stepdad and Mom, taking me to the Kennedy Center, in my hometown Wash/DC to see the 'High Priestess of Soul', Nina Simone, in 1978...I knew her music from my stepfather's record collection..and on weekends, I would often sit and play her records, back to back, because I was so fascinated with her. And the 2nd greatest experience, involved me being invited to my Aunt's graduation at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts in DC, in 1981..and on the program, before her class walked the stage to get their diplomas, was Leontyne Price and Phyllis Hyman, TOGETHER ON THE SAME PROGRAM!!!!. they didnt sing together, but they were both there, sitting next to each other on the front row. That alone, was almost too much for me. They had been donors to the school, helping to get it built...and HUGE advocates for performing arts in DC. I never saw them anywhere else, LIVE..except for that graduation..where they were invited and flown in, by the school. Ms Price, sang 2 spiritual songs and 2 arias...I cant remember all of what she sang, but I do remember very well, her singing the aria "Pace, Pace, Mio Dio"...and she held the B-Flat on the end of that aria, like FOREVER. She also sang "Vissi D'Arte" too, from Puccini. All I could think as I listened to both of them sing, was "I feel like Im in the presence of royalty". And everytime I see my Aunt (my Mom's youngest sister), I remind her of that concert at her high school..

Personally, I always found Leontyne Price overrated. There were far better American sopranos like Shirley Verrett and Maria Callas, who had a more solid chest voice, better acting skills, and superior sense of musicality and artistry.
