The beginning section that sounds like harp or strings is piano. Emerson has an open grand piano, he stands up, reacts inside, and rakes his fingers across the piano strings. Vocals, bass, acoustic and electric guitars are all Greg Lake. One of the best prog song's of all time.

David Sancious did a similar thing with a pick across the piano strings in the opening chords on Springsteen’s “New York City Serenade.” (Three years after this recording. I saw it as a nod.) ✨🤪

When I was 14 and listened to this song the firsr time I wondered how Keith did that sound. When I saw the live version I saw him doing that on the strings of the Steinway grand piano. It was amazing. ELP is one of the greatest prog bands ever.

To get the chords you want, you first silently press the keys of that chord with one hand, then slide the fingernails of your other hand across the strings. You’ll get the zither sound from all the strings, but only the strings from the keys you are holding down keep ringing.

Here's a tidbit from WIKI. I was going to write a comment about how he hand=strums the piano keys, but this author says it best: "The song starts as a soft ballad. On the original recording it begins with Keith Emerson holding down voicing on the piano keys (without having the hammers strike the notes) while strumming the grand piano strings with a plectrum, as Greg Lake enters on electric bass guitar, and Carl Palmer on subtle percussion." Its a masterful piece of music.

Keith Emerson was mostly self taught. He had lessons from a neighborhood teacher -- no conservatory for Mr. Emerson. But he had a great nose for what and where to study. His unorthodox methods have produced results that speak for themselves. You'll find prog bands that sound like Yes, or Genesis, or Pink Floyd. You won't find another band that sounds like ELP. For my money, they are the most original -- and most overlooked -- band ever. And if I'm doing the picking, they're the greatest band ever. And you guys -- bless your hearts -- are doing more than your part to honor the ELP legacy. Prog on.

Before you were ever conceived. Even in ‘70 when I LOVED ELP, I thought this cannot be possible that only 3 musicians created this magical musical landscape… all without digital. LOVE IT also. I see why Lake left King Crimson because of music such as this (which I thought insane, but he had his reasons). This work has such a jazzy feel. It is truly a masterpiece. In the '70s I had the priviledge of going to one of their concerts. Absolutely amazing. I can still see that huge gong behind Carl Palmer! I don't recall hearing this (until it got to the ending), but this song is a revelation to hear. Thanks for bringing it forward. So lovely to hear this again after many years. Damn they were good. We were blessed in the early 70s with Floyd, the Moodies, Focus, Yes, ELP and others. It's sad that the punk rock movement was partly a reaction to the cleverness of these posh boys. Why sing when you can sell records with spit and snarl? I wish I could say this legacy has endured but I fear it's mainly just those who remember it. And you two. Thanks so much for keeping it out there and relevant. Best wishes to you.

The whole record was based on Bartok's Microcosmos, and his musical world. Some of it also the ancient Hungarian music with the typical pentatonic scale, found mostly in Hungarian and Lapp/Samic music from northern Scandinavia. Bartok was a pre-jazz compositor, the "progressive" of the classic music.
No one, absolutely no one could touch this music and compose his own based on it but ELP. Only ELP! Astonishing, next to none!
There will never be geniuses as Keith Emerson, Greg Lake and Carl Palmer. Not at the same time the same place.
    Never, ever.

Over 45 years ago a young girl walked up to me and said - Has anyone ever told you that you look like Keith Emerson ? I replied - Who's Keith Emerson ? I was a Led Zeppelin fan and although had heard of ELP I did not know their names or have their records. I got a - "What ! ! ! ? You've never heard of him" ? Lol - I was wearing a leather fur lined jacket and had shoulder length hair. She became my girlfriend and first love. This song reminds me of her. She had posters of him on her wall and it was the spitting image of me including the jacket. We got engaged, but in the end I got my heart broke, but never will forget her. I never married. Greg Lakes vocals are wonderful. So many memories - like ripples. Music has this extraordinary way of becoming a time machine. Love this track, still. Thankyou for such a great reaction to a very special song.

Everyone will sing the praise of Greg Lake and Keith Emerson. And duly so! But before the evolution of Neil Peart I was enthralled with Carl Palmer and Bill Brufford. Just as spectacular as Brufford has been for Yes and King Crimson no one could be more perfect to play with Emerson and Lake than Carl Palmer.
I love the honesty in Nick's face (you can't fake that kind of emotion. ) And Lex has what Jamal aka Jamel calls stink face. LOVED IT

For a three piece band. Only Rush and ELP, you can't remove anyone and have the best three. Keith Emerson the best all-around keyboards, Gregg Lake can do all types of jazz, rock and sings too, and no better drummer for jazz and rock then Carl Palmer. And no need to defend Rush both the best as a three piece prog. band.

I mentioned that Bubby Rich had commented how good he thought palmer was. I was quite amused at your reaction to this song, it has been my favorite since the first time I heard it as a teenager in the early 70's and ELP has been my favorite band ever since. I've seen them live maybe 10 times and they were just as amazing live. I once saw them in Providence RI one night and followed their trailers to Cape Cod MA to see them the next night. Keith is a virtuoso on piano, Carl Palmer is simply phenomenal, he was Neil Peart before Neil, but that's my opinion. If you ever get a chance, look for Carl Palmers snare drum demonstration on TH-cam, he's amazing. Greg Lake has one of the best voices and very underrated bass & guitar player. They were the first band that I ever heard with a quadraphonic concert, stacks in four corners of the area, the end of Brain Salad Surgery I thought the building was blowing up.

"the jazz gang"? It's a great song, but not really jazz. The improvisation section is not over a melodic chord sequence, as is typical of traditional jazz. It might be compared to a Bach invention. Emerson's improvisations were more classically-based with strong blues and honky tonk influences, but not much "outside" harmonic experimentation-- as you'd hear with someone like Thelonious monk, but I love his playing.

  • @MellowWind
    @MellowWind ปีที่แล้ว +3

You have to understand the scope of the wealth we had in music in that era. Turn over any rock, and there's yet another band. My taste hasn't changed at all, and the great thing with outlets like youtube I'm able to go back to bands I may have liked but never really delved into, and just be in more discovery like you are, or go deep into any beloved group.
I hope that not just the largess starts to sink in, but the underlying vibe of love/consciousness/truth etc... It was truly a blessed time.
