  • New Electric Fast Ferries to Launch 100% Green Corridor Between Spain and Morocco
Balearia, a Spanish ferry operator, is once again making waves in the maritime world by advancing its commitment to zero-emission transportation. Following the success of launching the world’s first electric fast ferry and its upgraded sister ship, the company is now setting its sights on an even bigger milestone. In a move that promises to revolutionize eco-friendly travel, Balearia is preparing to open the world’s first 100% green corridor between Spain and Morocco using electric ferries.
These new twin ferries will sail between Algeciras, Spain, and Tangier, Morocco, two of the busiest ports in the Mediterranean. The journey is more than 50% longer than the Ibiza-Formentera route currently serviced by Balearia’s existing electric ferries, making this project a significant challenge. But with the support of the Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras, Balearia has developed a solution that will not only advance their electric ferry technology but also upgrade the ports with the necessary charging infrastructure to support this initiative.
The new electric ferries will feature 11.5 MWh gross battery capacity, which will allow them to operate entirely on electric power during regular sailings. These vessels will travel at speeds comparable to standard ferries, while emitting zero emissions. Each ferry will have a capacity of 800 passengers and 225 vehicles, making it a substantial upgrade in both capacity and environmental responsibility.
Importantly, these ferries are designed with sustainability in mind. While the ships will have backup diesel combustion engines for emergency purposes, their primary propulsion will be electric. This ensures that the operation remains environmentally friendly while also eliminating noise and vibration pollution. The goal is to make the Spain-Morocco route not only emission-free but also quieter and more pleasant for passengers.
The ferries are expected to enter service in the next two to three years, bringing a much-needed green transportation option to the Mediterranean. With this project, Balearia is pushing the boundaries of innovation, setting a new standard for sustainability in maritime travel. When complete, the green corridor between Spain and Morocco will mark a historic achievement in eco-friendly ferry operations, offering a glimpse into the future of maritime travel.
