I had the honor and privilege of being assigned to the Republic de Panama Canal when I was in the U.S. Army StratCom USACC from Nov. 1973 to Feb. 1977 ! I have seen all of the original Canal Locks in Operation on both sides of the Oceans and was totally amazed at the design and engineering that went into the Construction of the Canal Zone a 100 + years ago by the U.S. Army Corps Of Engineers ! And now after having seen 3 Complete Videos on the Expansion and Construction of the New wider and longer Locks to allow the Bigger Super Cargo Container Ships to go through, I am totally blown away at the massive amount of work that went into this expansion ! My Hat's Off to the Government of the Republic de Panama and the Canal de Panama for an amazing and great job well done ! I am Proud of all involved in this massive project and I SALUTE You ALL !
i was stationed in panama from 77 - 80. its was still the ZONE when i first arrived. panama has come a long way from when i was there. politics and emotions were high then but i enjoyed panama very much and i do miss it.
I notice there's no mention of the limited draft under the Bridge of the Americas 61.3 m (201 ft) at high tide, several ships don't use the canal because of this.
All this mucking around with tugboats blows. The locomotives were a MUCH better idea. This looks more like an efficient way to employ every person in Panama than an efficient way to move big ships.
Perhaps, but there are a lot less than can break in the new design. If a locomotive break, the lock is completely blocked, while the locomotive is repaired on site. At the new lock - if a tugboat break, just use a spare tugboat - meaning the lock is still in operation. Shipping companies (and customers in general) don't like unreliable services, so keeping all locks in operation is very important.
Why are the lines and mooring arrangements on the ship checked again before the Coccoli locks? What could have changed in transit from the Atlantic side?
Mr. star key, I, as you, were stationed the Canal Zone, Howard AFB, Canal Zone. Our base was on the Pacific side. That was one of the best assignments I had in my 23 years of serving. June 1975 til July 1978. Great country, great people. But if alive HI MR. HEMMINGS, MR CANNONIER, MRS DELBUSTO, MAZIE, Msgt(then Ssgt. OH, thank God for all the Tuna and PEACOCK BASS We ate! From J.C. Cundiff.
so can these new locks accommodate the Oasis class ships from Royal Caribbean? I sense saw future cruises on those enormous ships. Also maybe QM2 might start using it too. This changes everything!!
Hmm I thought it would of been much much bigger considering the ships might still be getting bigger. If you are going to go through all this trouble why not just make it extra bigger for the future ships
Could you not save virtually 100% of the water by pumping it from the lowest basin to the upper level? You could generate some of the power needed using the water flowing through the locks and into the basin
I'm not sure but it might have sth to do with them wanting to keep the lake with fresh water, because most likely the lowest basin will have brackish water.
If we all noticed that, I bet the logic employed by the canal authority to explain it is head shaking to the shippers-but we all pay for that inefficiency on our goods. Clearly, the canal authority sees nothing wrong with that. Otherwise, why produce a video that points out inefficient and illogical means of doing business. It's called having a monopoly.
Handing control over to Panama was a mistake , on several levels. Hopefully the American lawyers had the foresight to include in the agreement pages concerning what happens in time of war.
The canal uses fresh water from the lake at the middle of the canal and they are about maxed out on how much of this fresh water can be used. The whole canal is powered by the fresh water flowing down from the lake to the ocean.
Some politician(s) involved in the construction of the new locks invested in a tug / pilot ship company? I read the average pilot / tug fee for a U.S. port is $6000 for a mega ship, I can't imagine what the fee is for using the canal.
Interesting animation. But the process looks too complicated. Is there any widening of the Gaillard cut? I would assume so. Its not just enough for the Post Panamax and Supermax ships to make it thru the new locks. Still I dont think they would widen it to accommodate 2 ships moving in opposite directions simultaneously.
What about high wind situations? Seems like it would be to much work to keep the ships from hitting the sidewalls when the winds hit the sides of the containers...
If you book it, do the paperwork and pay the fee you can cross the Panama Canal on any kind of ship. This guy crossed it swimming ---> en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Halliburton.
I look forward to the Engineers explaining how the ships being pulled down the lock by tug and crashing into the sides was eliminated as a possibility. I don't have an engineering degree, but it seems there is not enough room for a tug to resist wind forces on the ship.
No mention of the time it will likely take for the crossing. Also it would be nice for a little background on who the investors are and what the projected income will be.
The new system replaces the locomotives with tugboats. Why is this better? 1) Pulling from land is more energy efficient than pushing water.. 2) A land based system can more accurately position the ship relative to the land based structure (i.e. the locks). 3) Longer ships could fit in the locks when just one ship is present, when moved by locomotive, versus three ships in the lock (container ship plus two tug boats) 4) Tugboat propulsion is diminished due to their closeness to huge cargo ship's hull.
I could of dug that with my new John Deere front end loader for half the cost LoL..... What keeps the big ship from running over the front Tug boat? I don't think you've thought this thru as ships don't have breaks, just reverse of the screws..... I can also see some moron not leaving enough slack and the ship's ropes breaking. I hope the locks are rubber lines with really big rubber bumpers.
@@stanpatterson5033 I just wondered because those ships are so big yet the Tug boats so small... I also know it takes awhile for a ship given the command " full astern" to stop going forward and start to go backwards. The tug boats look like toys compared to the ship even though I know Tugs have a lot of horse power.

I'm an American. What's a "meter"? I have a device outside my house that shows how much electricity I use per month. It's called a "meter". Is that the same thing?
All they needed to do is dig a deep wide canal And the ships could pass through on their own but panama trick every one and keep the old idea so every one pay up
It's actually LESS complicated. Using the train "mules" is inefficient for these massive new ships. Using their own propulsion seems to make more sense.
It cuts time and going around the Cape is a very dangerous voyage as there are big storms and treacherous seas. Saves time and fuel generating more money.
Just an idea there must be a way to tunnel a tunnel from the ocean to the water storage chambers to save and mot use fresh water at all power to supply electric to pump the water to the chambers from the ocean the flow of water from the chambers to drive generators to produce electric power and also in the reverse proscess. As the water flow no fresh water and no contamination of fresh water due to elevation below the water way and gatoon lake !!!
That would reduce the capacity of freight a vessel could carry over its lifetime. Going through the canal saves at least 10 days on journey times for the neo-panamax vessels, & time is money.

What is the height of rise of the water on each chamber?
One big difference with the new locks . They are reusing the water for the raising the boats. The old locks use one through water from the mountains .
so can these new locks accommodate the Oasis class ships from Royal Caribbean? I sense saw future cruises on those enormous ships. Also maybe QM2 might start using it too. This changes everything!!
I like the way he says "tugboat"
The new locks look like an Isambard Kingdom Brunel design.
I want to know how the rudders are going to be effective when ships under a certain speed lose steerage way which is rudder effect?

Why verify the equipment twice? It´s already verified when the vessel entered the channel wasn't it?
How?

to make sure the gear wasn't damaged at the first lock?
I thought that I heard that, but I thought it was a repeat of instructions.
They verify equipment twice because they want to provide jobs to their people out of the Panama Canal dues. It is a disease of Socialism.
The United States of America is so fortunate to be able to control the commerce through the Panama Canal in the event of war with China.
Handing control over to Panama was a mistake , on several levels. Hopefully the American lawyers had the foresight to include in the agreement pages concerning what happens in time of war.
Why the change from locomotives to tugs? Having longer locks to accommodate tugs takes longer locks and much more water.
+Greg Collins yes but water is saved here
doesn't matter time?

The Canals are totally dependent on the water level of the Chagres river to feed Gatun lake.
How much does it cost to make the transit ?
this idea with the tug boats is goofy , a big part of the lock is used just for these tug boats , reducing the size of ship that can be accommodated !
Did it working now ? Is it done.?
Your channel is named Panama Canal... just curious.. what do you do after this video? Not much left to say
By then, Mommy will have gotten her basement back from him, and he had to get a real paying job.
Ther is no mooring, for what I could see, (which I understand) the passing thru is very fast then. Just 2 tugs stabilise the ship. 3 tugs, not 4

Claro que si, todo eso está pensado el corte culebra o "el corte Gaillard" ya no se parece a como era antes, ahora es lo más parecido a una recta.
The question is ho many hours it takes to cross the whole canal
The line handlers' appearance looks so much smarter than the harbour pilots.
What about high wind situations? Seems like it would be to much work to keep the ships from hitting the sidewalls when the winds hit the sides of the containers...
Cleve Carpenter they do hit the walls, specially light draft ships.
they will have FENDERS in place
can I take my canoe through ?
you actually can

New York Times just did an article on the canal.
It takes about 8 to 10 hours, saving maybe 10 days on many journeys.
I did the cross from south side to north side on a cruise ship and it was from sunrise to sunset and the view was very nice.
