Created as a companion video to my series of DISNEY EVOLUTION videos (specifically 'Evolution of SCROOGE MCDUCK, Over 72 Years (1947-2019) Explained'), I take a look at the vocal evolution of the character as I compare the voices of all of his official voice actors over time, including Dallas Mckinnon, Bill Thompson, Alan Young, Will Ryan, Alan Reid, John Kassir, David Tennant, Eric Bauza and Enn Reitel. Hearing Alan Young's Scrooge again makes me think that it's a tragedy he never lived long enough to get a guest spot on the new Duck Tales. He could've voiced Scrooge's father Fergus.
I feel like most of the voices after Young passed were trying too hard to imitate him and thus don't sound natural. Tennant, however, has a perfect delivery and has successfully made Scrooge's character his own. Alan Young and David Tennant 4 life!!!

I'm so use to Alan Young, but I've been warming up to David Tennent at an instant (he's one of the Doctors after all).
Fun fact about Polish voice of Scrooge: we had just three voice actors for this character: Eugeniusz Robaczewski (to his death in 2003), Jerzy Złotnicki (new dub version of Ducktales from 1987) and Marek Robaczewski (since 2015-now).
I envy that. Here in Brazil we had a LOT of 'em. My favorite is José Santa Cruz, that voiced Scrooge in Mickey Twice Upon a Christmas. But I like Antônio Patiño, his voice in the original Ducktales series, and Hélio Ribeiro, that worked in the Ducktales Reboot.
At least, other characters have more """"""consistent"""""" voices, that aren't changed all the time.
Alan Young is my favorite Scrooge McDuck voice. But I do enjoy David Tennant, John Kassir and Enn Reitel's performances as Scrooge.
There is no Scrooge without Alan young
So Scrooge deliberately put his money on the moon. If that happened in current DuckTales, there'd be issues.

Fun fact: David Tennant reprised his role as Scrooge McDuck in the 2022 Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers movie. However, since Scrooge made a short cameo, David just made a laugh.
In that case, I’m guessing it would’ve simply been a recycled archival recording.
No one can ever replace Alan Young or do the voice as good as he did.
I Think Eric Bauza is the best voice post Alan Young!
And I'm also surprised how much I like Bill Thompson's voice.
I think that entire Donald Duck and Friends Scrooge's Rocket skit is still up on TH-cam. You could make a drinking game out of how many times he says "Beagle Boys" and be passed out on the couch by the end of it.
As much as I love Eric Bauza as a voice actor, he can’t do a Scottish accent to save his life. That sounded more like a bad Australian accent

In the 1960 movie The Time Machine Alan Young plays a Scottish man with spectacles red hair and beard and he uses his Scrooge voice it's almost like watching human version of Scrooged .

Alan Young is THE voice, all others do not match up. I don't get people's fixation for David Tennant, his voice is much to young sounding and lacks the Scottish accent I attribute to the character, the voices that preceded Young's also sound off and forced. Young was a natural and he will always be Scrooge to me, no one else will ever come close.
But David Tennant IS Scottish...

Agreed! Alan was my childhood and I really liked David's version.
I LOVE David Tennant voicing Scrooge, not just because he’s actually Scottish but he brings a lot of character to him. Alan Young and Enn Reitel’s voices are pretty fitting, too.
David Tennant voiced the Scottish character Angus in the 2021 animated film The Loud House Movie
Technically, Alan Young was also Scottish since he was born to Scottish parents even though his birthplace was in England.

Alan Young was superb as Scrooge. Though David Tennent and Bill Thompson was good as well. The rest was ok.
Tennent GOOD?! He's awful, bad, lame, crap, shit! He doesn't even SOUND like Alan Young a bit. Rather John Kassir cuz he really sounds like Young.
Mats Berglinn Tennant isn’t supposed to sound like Young. He’s doing his own thing with the performance and is doing a pretty good job at it. I will agree that David does sound a little too young for the part and John Kassir does do a decent Alan Young imitation. However, since he’s not trying to imitate Young, David’s able to be more creative with the role, rather than aspire to be Alan Young. I’d recommend watching “Last Crash of the Sunchaser,” which is one of his finest works as Scrooge.

this was REALLY fascinating. I was so accustomed to Alan Young I didn't realize how VARIOUS and DIFFERENT Scrooge has sounded over the years with the different VAs!
it's certainly hard to imagine any other voice actor who's not Alan Young playing the character (though I think Tennent's Scrooge is great too), pretty much like how no matter how many VA's Bugs Bunny gets, we automatically think Mel Blanc when it comes to that lovable screwy rabbit

Alan Young’s really the only one that seems to capture the personality of the Scrooge from the comics with his voice. At one moment he could be a greedy old miser and the next a thrill-seeking adventurer. RIP.
David Tennant is pretty good too at capturing the adventurous aspect of the character as well as bringing emotion to the role (something Alan could do too). However, he does sound a bit too young for the role.
John Kassir’s a decent replacement for Alan Young. Bill Thompson was also fine, but Scrooge really wasn’t anything more than a Scottish version of Ludwig Von Drake in that short. All the other voices sound too deep or too gruff.
Thanks for making these voice videos Dave. They’re great references for comparing interpretations of characters side-by-side.

You left out an important and interesting little fact about Scrooge’s current Ducktales voice, David Tennant was not only one of the actors who played the Doctor from Doctor Who, he is also Scottish, which gives Scrooge a more authentic background as a Scotsduck…
Alan Young's accent was authentic, too. His father was Scottish and he lived in Scotland as a child.

Fun Fact! Alan Young was actually Scottish himself. When he immigrated from Scotland to Canada, he did his best to hide it and to get rid of it, although if you listen when he tries to whisper, especially in Mister Ed, his accent slips out.
David Tenant is a good Scrooge but he just isn't Uncle Scrooge without Alan Young.
So Alan Young casting him as excludes does make sense when he realize he was Scottish himself, so doing the boys schools, McDuck kind of let him to do real accent

I can't argue with Alan Young, he's the classic and really defined the role. But I absolutely adore David Tennant's take on the role. I think he fits the tone of Ducktales 2017 perfectly, and I can't see anyone else (including Young) doing that version of Scrooge any better. Also, fun fact, apparently they have Tennant come up with the exclamations for the show (curse me kilts, bless me bagpipes, etc., although I can't say for certainly that those specific examples came from him)

No-one will ever surpass Alan Young as the voice of Scrooge McDuck. The other voice actors are nowhere near as good.

Alan Young will forever be one of my favorite depiction of Scrooge McDuck, but I’m not gonna lie I really enjoyed David Tennet in the DuckTales reboot, also John Kassir (Crypt Keeper) and Eric Bauza (Tiger Claw in TMNT 2012) did him at one point?! Awesomeness!!!
Eric bauza is not too bad, but he ain't no alan young or david tennant that's for sure!

Besides Alan Young for obvious reasons I think John Kassir is a decent replacement for Alan Young as Scrooge McDuck because he actually tries to imitat the voice that Alan Young used just give him time to get used to voicing the character and I'm sure he'll improve.
It's so fun to get to hear Alan Young as he gets more and more comfortable with scrooge's voice.
I liked Bill Thompson and Will Ryan best, but I also like Alan Young and was surprised to like David Tennant's voice for the character too.

I feel like Dallas McKennon's Scrooge sounds too harsh, it sounds too much like a Scottish Pirate (if you know what I mean) Alan Young's voice I feel like is the perfect Scrooge, his Scrooge has a soft Scottish accent.

I remember when the remastered game came out...I was so excited to hear Alan young voice Scrooge. I had not heard him since DuckTales the movie. I never seen of those other shows
David Tennant is totally the best Scrooge. It might be because he himself is Scottish, but his voice for Scrooge sounds the most natural. Not to mention he sounds old without being crusty and non-active like your average old person. Old, yet spry.

ngl, Tennant sounded weird to me at first because Alan Young's voice is just so iconic. But he grew on me REAL fast. That show's entire cast is so brilliant.
Alan Young will always be Scrooge McDuck to me. I grew up watching DuckTales and Christmas Carol they are part of my childhood. (I also grew up with the Money short). However, I love what they're doing with the reboot show and David is a good replacement since Alan can no longer be with us.

Alan Young will always be Scrooge to me, but I do also love Bill Thompson in anything he does, from Jacques in Lady and the Tramp to King Hubert in Sleeping Beauty.
I didn't know Will Ryan voiced Scrooge at one point.

It goes without saying but I'm saying that anyway: Alan Young RULES as Scrooge (it's amazing how still fit and energetic he was in his last voice performances) but David Tennant is a great replacement and I hope he will voice him more often after Ducktales 2017 ❤ He has the right amount of heart, passion and excentricity the role requires! As for the others, I don't think they were bad but, in my opinion, they didn't leave much of a personal impact on me
Alan Young is iconic, of course, but other than him I like David Tennant. Enn Reitel would come in third....Actually being Scottish helps greatly in that regard. John Kassir is a good voice-actor, but I don't think he works as Scrooge... I mean, I don't know what sort of accent he thinks he's doing, but it sure as heck ain't Scottish.
If there’s one thing I wanna achieve in life is to sound like Scrooge McDuck. And also because I want to be a voice actor.

Young and Tennant were definitely the best for Scrooge. McKennon sounded WAY too coarse and piratey. Heck, he sounded more like Glomgold than Scrooge.
