Not sure why Mark doesn't use UZR or DRS which shows that Bo was actually an above average short stop defensively. Haven't watched the whole thing yet but I bet Mark talks up Bobby Witt Jr's defense even though Witt was awful defensively if you look at DRS or league average if you look at UZR.

Correa played with Plantar Facitis all year, and was hitting into double plays 24/7, but when it finally snapped and he took a week on the IL, he came back in the playoffs and was much faster and outrunning double play balls again I expect his 2024 to be a ton better

You're right that Bichette is a much better hitter with a 125 wrc+ last season, but his defense is nowhere close to Dansby so he was a 4 win player. Dansby also plays almost every game every season, whereas Bichette has missed some time with injuries
Not really, going from consistently being one of the worst defenders in the league to all of a sudden having 1 “mediocre” defensive season still makes you pretty horrendous overall.
My only issue with Lindor is that he often feels like a very streaky hitter. He will either go for 7-10 with 6RBI and 2HR or he will go 1-15. There's no in between with the guy. He's a top 10 maybe even a top 5 but it's so difficult to say that he is a top 3 shortstop just because of his inconsistency

You've gotta rank JP Crawford higher. His bat (OPS+) was 2nd best for SS behind Seager and his defense was skewed due to a small number of costly errors. Highly sought after SS is a money pit. Almost every team wants an all star SS. The money is better spent on a great defensive SS and a bat on a different position. An OF with the same offensive stats as a SS seems to get paid less than the SS with the same numbers.
Crawford has crap speed and arm (which is why the metrics hate him), but he makes amazing plays with the glove. In the end he's a solid defender, probably a bit above average.

I have no problem with these rankings, Marc. I think Gunnar Henderson will be putting up Bobby Witt Jr. numbers for the Orioles next year (let's recall that it took a while for Witt to get up to speed in the Majors). As much as I like Jorge Mateo, he still needs to be more consistent with the bat. If he did that, he could go from not ranked to maybe as high as the top 15 to top 20. Of course. there is also a decent chance it would be for another team, given the deep depth of the O's in middle infield players.

Gonna have to completely disagree with "Bichette defensively, pretty horrendous". He's by no means a top 10 defensive shortstop, but he was at the very least league average last season. Tied for 5th in errors among full time SS with only 8 (23 & 24 the previous two seasons), and tied for 9th in DRS. He isn't the nightmare on defense that he once was. Volpe won the gold glove with 17 errors, and Bichette is still considered to be terrible at defense. Bobby Witt Jr, who is "one of the best defensive shortstops last year" has a -6 DRS and had 12 errors. I get defense is tougher to quantify and use as a metric for these videos, but there's no consistency here.

Mark, you gotta stop using OAA to determined how good infielders are on defense. The metric was created to measure the defense for outfielders. A better metric is UZR for infielders or just looking at an infielders DRS. Talking up Bobby Witt Jr.'s defense is ridiculous. Guy was league average according to UZR and was horrendous if you look at his DRS.

Highly sought after SS is a money pit. Almost every team wants an all star SS. The money is better spent on a great defensive SS and a bat on a different position. An OF with the same offensive stats as a SS seems to get paid less than the SS with the same numbers.

Crawford has crap speed and arm (which is why the metrics hate him), but he makes amazing plays with the glove. In the end he's a solid defender, probably a bit above average.

I have no problem with these rankings, Marc. I think Gunnar Henderson will be putting up Bobby Witt Jr. numbers for the Orioles next year (let's recall that it took a while for Witt to get up to speed in the Majors).
As much as I like Jorge Mateo, he still needs to be more consistent with the bat. If he did that, he could go from not ranked to maybe as high as the top 15 to top 20. Of course. there is also a decent chance it would be for another team, given the deep depth of the O's in middle infield players.

Bo was terrible at D, now he is fine, hope he continues to improve, but his bat makes up a lot of ground on the field. Clutch factor - what stat describes timely hitting? Segar is off the charts....polar opposite Vlad Jr.
Gonna have to completely disagree with "Bichette defensively, pretty horrendous". He's by no means a top 10 defensive shortstop, but he was at the very least league average last season. Tied for 5th in errors among full time SS with only 8 (23 & 24 the previous two seasons), and tied for 9th in DRS. He isn't the nightmare on defense that he once was.
Volpe won the gold glove with 17 errors, and Bichette is still considered to be terrible at defense. Bobby Witt Jr, who is "one of the best defensive shortstops last year" has a -6 DRS and had 12 errors. I get defense is tougher to quantify and use as a metric for these videos, but there's no consistency here.
