My Weiner dog lived 22 years. We had him 22 years. He was a stray. Very loving, but he had a mission in life. What could was his reason to exist? "To Catch a Squirrel" would be the title of his novel, if one was written about his life. In the morning, he was fed in the house but preferred to spend his entire dayoutside, he ran and ran all day every day. He never got sick. We had a large fenced backyard. I really wanted a lap dog, but I wanted him to be happy. I understood that he wasn't too happy playing dress up the dog with a 6 year old. He put up with playing dress up (cowboy hat and all) and humored me willingly. But he had a mission and when he was ready to hunt he'd sit by the door and sing and sing (howling) until he was set free to go back to his serious business. Exercise extended his life.
I think another reason he lived so long....... He had real meat to eat. Never dog food. Fortunately, for Abernathy, we owned a cattle ranch. It was cheaper for us to feed him leftovers, corn fed steaks, than to buy dogfood. He wasn't sure what dog food was. He really loved the bones, T bones especially. He got lucky but I was luckier. He turned completely grey. Never slowed down. Little guy never caught a squirrel but nevegave up. So determined. He did find a dead one day. He paraded around the yard like he'd won the super bowl. I never let him know I saw a dead squirrel earlier. Can you guess what he did with it? The little angel ran to me, placed it by my feet (in an odd like CEREMONIAL LIKE WAY????) I finally understood, duh! He wasn't hunting for him, he was hunting for ME. He wanted to say thanks for loving him & giving him a better life. You see, he was an abused puppyand didn't want to be touched at first. He was in very bad condition when I found him. You'd cry if you heard what he'd been thru. He gave me a chance. I held him in my lap, pinned him down, kissed him, massaged him & it didn't take him long to relax and enjoy the love I gave him. He did have a great life, 22 years of medical care, the best beef any human could ask for, and the most love a little girl could give. I adored him & let him be a dog. I was his little girl for 22 years. He was safe and protected for the rest of his life. I still think of him all the time. I'm 59 now. Pets can make a HUGE impact on your life.

After loosing my Mili at a very young age of 4 years, I long for an other dog ever since.. Because of my studies and some family matters I'm unable to get one at present. Instead I try to help in rescueing activities as possible. Your story gives me great hopes for a future life even if a bit late.. I hope to adopt rescue dogs and senior dogs as well some day. Starting a dog shelter is also there in my bucket list.. It's been great experience sharing such a motivational story.. getting from someone wise . 👍🏼🙂. Thank you.

Hi Jwala! I know this is two years after you posted this comment, but I'm very touched by your story. I lost my boxer puppy on September 16th, 2021 just 3 days before her 1st birthday, so when you said you lost your Mili at the age of 4, I felt like we had something in common. If you don't mind me asking, what did your Mili pass away from? My Gracie Lou had surgery on her paw for a torn ligament, and it got infected with MRSA which is the antibiotic resistant staph infection. She spent 10 days in the ICU, but on day 10, the vet said there was nothing more they could do for her, and she was just getting worse. I had to make the hardest decision any pet parent has to make. She was suffering so much, and she told me it was time to let her go. Her little body was hurting so much, and she was so tired and couldn't fight anymore. So, as I held her in my loving arms, wrapped up in a warm, soft blanket, with one of my hands gently stroking her chest and the other supporting her head, she looked up at me and found the strength to give me a kiss on my cheek. I felt her last breath and her last heartbeat as she quietly and gently left me. It was the worst day of my 60 year life. Almost 6 months later, and I'm still devastated and totally broken. I will NEVER get over her death! It was so preventable, and that's just killing me! See, she was over vaccinated, on 7 different antibiotics in one year for chronic UTIs, oral flea/tick preventatives, oral heartworm preventatives and fed kibble. At the time, I didn't know any better and just blindly trusted and obeyed her vets. I truly believe that this is what killed my poor little angel. She was my heart and soul, and I loved her with every fiber of my being. But her immune system was trashed, so the infection took over and quickly entered her bloodstream. So, since this happened, I've spent every waking hour researching and watching videos and reading blogs, etc. See, I'm searching for answers, and maybe I'll never find them, but I have to try because I have a 9 year old female boxer baby, Maggie Mae, who's the love of my life, and I'm trying to help her be healthier and happier and have made a lot of changes to achieve my goal and slowly, she's responding in a positive direction! I'm so sorry for such a long message, but I try to tell Gracie's story to anyone that'll listen if I have to tell it 10,000 times or more! If I can help just one pet by telling her story, I think she would be very pleased! I also wanted to ask you if you have been able to bring another dog into your life yet? And I wonder if you're making any progress towards your bucket list? If it's none of my business, just tell me! I just care about others and sometimes I don't know where to draw the line and shut my mouth 🙄!💜

I have an 85 pound pit mix who is 16 years old and still running in the mountains.. his food is one protein, and only a handful of seeds and veggies.. plus sweet potatoes/rye bread or sunflower seed based bread.. it’s expensive raw food and I cook it to remove the grease. I trained him to run off leash 15 years ago and let him run circles around me as I hiked- so my average 4 miles a day would be more like 16 miles for him. I gave him love and acknowledged his experience, never pushing him past his limits for my gain. Also, this may seem strange, but I let him lick my face- I have seen dogs who were not allowed to do this- there is something off with these dogs: possibly having to face rejection every day. What it all boils down to, in my opinion, is that I treated him as an equal and strived to meet his needs, rather than just do the bare minimum. There’s a lesson from someone who isn’t just doing research, but who is living with a 16 year old 85 pound dog that still can climb rocks, dig, and walk at least 5 miles a day.

We lost our little dog 7/17/22 at the "tender" age of 18 and 5.5 months. She had an INCREDIBLY vast and varied diet throughout her life, kibble and fresh foods, bones, raw foods, fruits and veg, and the menu changed with her tastes and what her teeth could handle. She had so many grand adventures in her life. I completely agree with the study that good variety, lots of exercise every day, and a positive attitude contributed to her longevity. I also lost my mother almost 6 months ago. Our dog and I were attached at the hip, and I do believe that she also declined from taking on too much of my broken heart. She knew that "mommy had a sad all the time." I miss her already.

Our baby girl will soon be eleven. At 115#, she's perhaps 5# overweight because we are unable to walk her any longer.. We are old and disabled, and while she used to get @ 1 1/2 hours walk everyday, we can no longer do that. We agonize that we may lose her soon...but your talk gave me hope...the thought that I should try to buy a motorized cart, so 84 year old gramps can continue their much-loved, twice-daily, rain or shine activity. It will benefit them both! Thankyou!

I have always feared death greatly and at the moment still do. I just lost my 12 yr old Staffordshire/APBT and the moment the vet gave him his last shot of his life I looked at weigh the straightest face I could manage from the crying and said to her I will gladly go with him if you have an extra one of those. I meant it with all of my heart I’m going downhill at a fast pace with no clue how to recover. I’ve had very old cat of 20yrs and also some dogs one which was 22yr old. My stafford/apbt was my first of those breeds and he had his struggles. Splenectomy around 4 yrs old and some mast cell tumors removed around 6 or 7 so I was lucky I guess to have him as long as did. Being a bachelor that talks to know one regularly except my mother I’m so lost and depressed. Ive never had a dog that stayed inside and was with me as much as sledge was (dog i just lost) rip my friend. Rhodney this isn’t the first video of yours I’ve you’re awesome bro. Keep it up. Best wishes ✌️

Thank you for this info, Rodney! My girl will be 11 this February (2020) and I do worry of losing her. She's a Jack Russell and Shiba Inu mix. I just put her on a raw diet. She was on a raw diet a few years ago, but I put her on kibble when her and I moved off Kauai to the mainland. It was 'convenient' during the move and then I was lazy and didn't go back to raw. It was a high quality kibble, but now I know that it was just kibble and I feel awful for doing this to my little buddy. I've been binge-watching your videos and Dr. Becker's videos and also videos of your associates. I feel like I'm WAY too late to the party, but I'm making some big changes for my girl and hope I can reverse the damage that I've caused her. Thank you, sir!

Thank you Rodney, for this list.
Ive been working on our microbiomes for a while now. Also working on stress - fairly difficult at times. My boys don't get much in the way of carbs, I make their food at home, specifically because one of them is prone to hyperuricosuria - like dalmatians. He grew urate stones during a prostate infection that I didn't catch soon enough and required surgery. Most all of us need more exercise. I use a scale when I feed my dogs and I weigh them periodically to monitor their weight. I don't use chemicals on the grass or plants in my yard - too risky. I'll live with the weeds.
Again, thanks so much for this list. I took a screen shot of it to remind me.
    You rock!

A Cattle Dog lived to be 29 once. A Kelpie lived to be 30. Whatever genetic damage we've done to modern dogs through excessive breeding, dingo hybrids seem to be better off.
Also, humans and many dogs (labs being a notable exception) can avoid obesity simply by eating decent food and not eating more then we/they want.

One friend once told me that his shih tzu lived so long b/c he walked him 5 times a day; not far and not fast and not for exercise but for the ability to eliminate frequently. I also think the owner's attitude of being carefree was important as well as the home cooked meals mixed with the kibble. He gave the dog lots of things that we are told not to, including onions and garlic and nuts. the dog was never sick.

Commercial pet food is PROBABLY the worst cause of pet obesity. Make your own pet food, preferably wet. Basically boil a pot of veges and meats/bones (both scraps) and lentils/ rice and make packets of it. No salt or flavoring, nor strain any liquids out from the mixture. Raw eggs, milk and whole wheat bread slices for breakfast, gives them a shiny coat as well.

Just today had to put down my 19 year old cat to rest. My handsome boy Loco. I'm literally crushed. I've had him since 14. More than half my life. Cause was cancer. I knew more likely was cause was probably diet especially since it's very reason I eat clean (and my husband and kids) and have been researching all day to start raw diet for my other fur buddies. I have Male Malamute, Female Doberman, Female Aussie/Husky Mix. So any information on correct weight to raw food ratio would be much appreciated. My understanding is I want to feed 80/10/10. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

i try to adjust the amount of raw food to match Saffie's interest. if she skips a meal i give her less next time. i have read in many places including another talk by this same speaker that it is best to limit food almost to partial starvation, that overfeeding as is the American way, is bad for any animal.

Could your next video be a comparison between vaccinated and unvaccinated animals, if you can find any? I am 75 and when I was a child our pets died of old age or being run over, we never knew where the Vet was and vaccination and spot on flea toxins were never heard of. I have a 24 year old very fit Siamese cat but he is only mine because his owner trusted the medical mafia and had a flu jab and died within two weeks. All my Persian cats died thirty years ago of Feline Infectious Peritonitis acquired from vaccinations, my other cats never “caught” it. A horrible unnecessary death. I suggest you do,the research I did, we are being lied to, for example Polio was caused by DDT Pesticide and was not cured by vaccinations, it was cured by banning DDT. All the modern Polio is caused by the vaccinations. Ask Bill Gates and the Indian Government who have to care for half a million paralysed children. Namaste 🙏

I feed my puppy (5 mos old Goldendoodle) raw meat, rotating the protein type, in the full meal format, with organ, bone, veggies and fruit, kelp, your turmeric/coconut oil paste, and homemade Himalayan treats. Occasionally I give him quail eggs, shell included, add cinnamon, ginger and hemp seed oil, sardines in water, uncooked chicken necks, broccoli sticks. The big question: Do I need to give him commercial multivitamins, and/or Omegas?

The warning from "Ted" in the description is ridiculous. People with the oldest and healthiest dogs have fed a raw diet and exercised their pets vigorously literally for decades. The information was out there long before Rodney's tireless efforts to enlighten pet parents. I wouldn't even know about Rodney or proper pet care if I hadn't suddenly lost a cherished hunting dog at 8yo. Grow some balls "Ted".

CC subtitles are really really bad. They change some words for others, they give the wrong people's names and have many many mistakes (even spelling mistakes). If this is the job of one of TED Translators (volunteers who subtitle TED Talks), I wish there were people at TED who may check their work before it comes out.

So what do you recommend we feed our pets? This must be so important. I have had 3 wonderful German shepherds and the last of my girls died at only 6 from a massive tumour in her spleen. NO sign at all till the morning we took her to the vet because she felt a little warm. Totally devastated when they told us there was no chance. That was 5 months ago and I still cry every day.
PLEASE ADVISE WHAT SORT OF FOOD. I NEVER TRUSTED KIBBLE, RESEARCHED AS MYCH AS POSSIBLE BUT WE ALL KNOW THE LIES BIG BUSINESS TELL.

raw and ideally home made so you know exactly what goes in to it. do a lot of research to make sure you are not leaving out anything critical to good nutrition. i keep adding things to Saffie's diet as i find suggestions online and elsewhere. recently added dried beet , toasted chicory and pea flour to the many other ingredients. also added a supplement mix that is expensive but i thought sounded reasonable.

I'm vegan and have a gut disorder, so I'm SUPER passionate about proper nutrition and every day of my life I have to diligently take care of my gut and microbiome if I don't want to get sick (chronic illness). So, of course, I want to give my dog, my baby girl, good, whole foods. However, when I tried to give her a cucumber slice one day, my Mom yelled at me for 5 minutes about how I was going to make her sick and hurt her and that the remains of a chicken who's been bred to be 10 times fatter and stuffed with hormones the whole 6 weeks of their life is somehow "healthier" than a fresh vegetable.
