Another thing that people forget to do is that you can have the post office stamp it as FRAGILE. Doesn't cost a thing extra.
The worst shipping that I heard of was from a friend of mine who was a high bidder on a 60's portable suitcase-style stereo, the kind where the speakers are attached on the sides. It was sent WITHOUT A BOX with just the shipping label attached to the outside of the unit, and it arrived scratched up and missing a speaker!

That reminds me of the one time I bought an old Apple Macintosh G4 Computer for a friend on fleabay....the seller didn't even bother putting any padding into the box and the computer case was completely smashed up (luckily it still worked and that's what counted....this was before me knowing how to handle such things on fleabay so I basically took the loss).
The packing video seems like a very good idea.
I've sold stuff on fleabay that was heavy and it arrived in good condition and I even got a compliment from the buyer for packing it properly - usually takes me at least an hour or more to pack something properly though, so for low value items it's usually not worth my time to bother selling it in the first place....

It never ceases to amaze me how lazy some people are on eBay when it comes to packing an item YOU paid the winning bid amount/buy-it-now price + shipping for - especially if the shipping charges are high.
Reminds me of a bid I once placed a few years ago for an early model VCR - paid the seller the bid amount plus postage charges - when it arrived, the machine was loose inside a large box with no secure packing or any protection at all.
There were pieces of plastic and metal inside the unit as well as fragments in the box. The VCR was salvageable to a point (and yes it worked after I replaced the broken bits and re-aligned the mechanism).
Suffice to say that seller received NO feedback from me for that transaction and I didn't buy anything from him again.
So I completely understand your position, Mr. Radiotvphononut when it comes to eBay and some sellers' shenanigans. That record player would have been super awesome if it wasn't damaged. I'm glad you got your money back.

On the other, I made the same mistake myself with packaging a halogen torchiere and it arrived to the buyer completely destroyed. I obviously gave her a refund, but I still feel terrible about doing such a poor job packing it.

Yeah eBay is really a hit and miss when it comes to packing and shipping. Especially for old CRT TVs. I got two DOA 13 inchers from eBay and one 12 inch B&W tv that survived.
First one was a Sony KV13TR24 Trinitron. This was shipped via USPS Priority mail and it took a beating. The bottom screw mounts to the CRT broke off the front shell and as a result the tube pivoted upwards in shipping causing the neckboard to crack in half and snap off the end of the necktube. So have one with a dead CRT. This seller did a piss poor job at packing it. Only a single layer of thin bubble wrap with newspaper wadding and a sprinkling of packing peanuts. Definitely not good enough at all for shipping a CRT this size! Got full refund from that seller though. Luckily thus far none of them have given me any trouble refunding items damaged in shipping/being DOA.
Then since the seller didn't ask me to send it back, I tossed the large bits to the trash (Dead CRT and the plastic housing) and kept the board and neck board along with the deflection yoke and the speaker.
Then I found another KV13TR24 from a different seller. Went for the same model TV since I had parts to that one now thanks to the last seller not packing it good. :P
The second TV came from a seller that had a history of shipping TVs and 100% feedback.
And...This one also arrived DOA. But it was packed very well. Plenty of plastic padding, layer of thick bubble wrap and the TV was packed in facing down. This one was shipped UPS Ground and took about 5 days to get to me. (I live in Texas and this was shipped from all the way from Seattle Washington!)
The CRT mounts failed in the exact same way. Bottom screw mount plastic broke off. Tube lifted up enough to crack the neckboard. So contacted the seller about this and also got full refund. He also didn't ask me to send it back. I'm starting to think the plastic is just too brittle for a TV this age to survive in shipping no matter how well it's packed. This perticular TV was made in 1991 (with the first one with the dead CRT being a year older).
But I was lucky with the second TV. The tube survived. The neckboard was nearly pulled off the tube and the neckboard also had a crack, but somehow the neck of the tube didn't break. The tube didn't move up as much as it did with the last TV.
The crack was also much smaller and only went across 3 traces (the first TV's neckboard had the crack happen at a different angle. Seems to break 8+ traces. Could probably fix that one but not worth it since I have one in much better condition. Kept it only for the components on the board which are all still good I believe)
After bridging those broken traces by soldering a wire across them, the TV still wouldn't power on. The main board had a crack near the flyback. But the only traces I seen this crack go across already had a wire soldered across it (with the second trace I saw broken going to one of the deflection yoke connectors. I soldered a wire onto that to bridge that one).
So this TV already had a cracked PCB before it was even shipped? There is also apparent moister/water damage? The RF shield metal cage covering the OSD/Picture control IC has significant rust as well as the metal housing to the RF tuner module. There was a sprinkling of copper rust/oxidation on the back of one of the voltage regulator ICs in the power supply circuit. I bet something died in the power circuit on this board.
In any case I gave up trying to get this board to work since I had a whole other board that probably still worked. I already got refunded and didn't have to send this back so I had nothing to lose trying to fix it.
So I took the main board from the last TV (since it is identical model to this one) and plopped it into this one. The board to that one survived somehow despite being from the TV that was poorly packed and took a bigger beating from USPS. No evidance of water damage either. This TV was also shipped from a location less then 300 miles from me and USPS still managed to ***k it up. Though the poor packing of this TV is probably more to blame then USPS. Seller to the first TV didn't even put any labels indicating that it was fragile. Second seller didn't either though....
I did some fine tuning to the trim pots on the board to get the sub-color/sub contrast where I want and also reduced the vertical overscan a little bit. I also adjusted the trim pots on the neckboard to make sure white balance is good.
The TV powers on now and looks great. The composite inputs it has really holds it back in terms of how good it can look so I plan to RGB mod this TV at some point. Also looks like I don't have to fiddle with the deflection yoke/magnets/convergence strips. The geometry/convergance on this TV appear to be as good as it was from the factory. :D
This TV really is really good for how old it is. I may do a video of my own on this TV at some point. (probably after I have RGB modded it)
As for the 12 inch B&W el cheapo china set. That one survived thanks to being shipped in it's original box. Despite that a plastic cover to one of the inductors on the main board came loose. Seemed to be cosmetic though. TV operates as well as the design allows. :P I ended up composite input modding that one. Made it look pretty nice for a cheap china TV made in 1999. :P
Long story short I wouldn't recommend getting a CRT TV off ebay that exceeds 12 inches in size (especially Sony Trintrons. They are heavier due to how they are designed). Only reason I put up with having 2 dead sets come to me from Ebay was that my area sucks and there just aren't any good TVs to be found for sale locally. :(

Sadly, eBay did away with the refund part. Now its "return" only requiring you to send it back to start a refund process. eBay generates the return label with the data given during auction listing/details, and bills it to the seller's account. Once the package arrives then eBay starts the refund process. I've been through it a couple times now.

    • @jsciarri
      @jsciarri 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I have absolutely no idea as to why eBay decided to ditch the "refund" option. The "return" only policy makes eBay think that everything that sells on their website can be easily replaceable.
I just went through the same exact situation with poor packaging, and the radio was ultimately destroyed. I purchased the radio for parts only, but the parts that I had wanted were destroyed during the shipment process. Sent the seller a message, suggesting even a partial refund would be acceptable. The only responses from the seller was to ship it back for a refund, which most people don't have time for.

Archie Bunker I feel your pain, but I know exactly why they did away with it. If you remember the CEO announced that eBay is moving to become a product-based company instead of a flea market based company. They are trying to become Amazon Sadly... The only way you can get a refund through Amazon without a return is through the chat system.

justsomeguytoyou it's been at least a year or so. But sellers can still refund you outside of eBay if they wish which still happens from time to time. But you can no longer go through the official eBay processes for refund only anymore.

All in all it’s a great sounding radio with its marbled Bakelite cabinet. I bet when these radios, record players were new the people who bought them new probably though that they weren’t going to 50 plus year. Try doing that with today’s electronics with are disposable economy.

There is no excuse for ANYONE shipping an item to be that STUPID ! Even if it was double boxed, the outer box was garbage. It looked like it had be reused several times. That reminds me on the time I bought a Technics turntable from an Ebay seller and he left the patter on the unit. They have no kind of snap ring or keeper on the platter of those things. They have to be taken off, wrapped good with some cardboard around it and packed under the unit. I was very lucky the tone arm did not get destroyed, but it did scratch up the top or the unit.

Ok that's good about the refund. Did they ask you to return it?
I once was forced to decide between keeping a shipping-damaged VTR in ultra-rare low mileage condition or returning it and loosing the cost of shipping. And thus not being able to afford to try again. "Luckily" I had all parts needed to repair sufficiently. But when you see one of the feet of a 70 lb vtr having punched a clean cut circle out of the bottom of the single wall shipping box you know beer is going to be better then coffee. The thing must have had well over 500 lbs piled on top to bend up the all steel frame as it did.

I absolutely DESPISE these STUPID "experts" in packing! I bought a Pioneer turntable in pristine condition several years ago and got basically the same BS about him knowing how to pack it. When I opened the box I could have literally killed him had it not been against the law. Platter was not removed, wrapped separately, counterweight had been left on and it acted like a wrecking ball in a glass factory. What the platter didn't destroy the counterweight did. The SOB closed his eBay account and left me high and dry. Being a novice to eBay I did not know there were other paths I could have taken to get my money back so I "ate" close to $150.00! Now I don't take crap off of any of them. If I get junk from a seller, they know about it and if they even blink I let eBay have them.

Whenever I ship, I make sure to put a ton of padding, and when I put it in the box I give it a good shake test. If it feels loose, I add more. My rule of thumb is I want at least 4 inches of bubble wrap between the item and the corner of a box. If it's an antique/fragile item, I double box it and I explain I double box and show photos of it on ebay on how I shipped it to justify the added cost of shipping. If it's just a power cord/transformer, I still bubble wrap it to make sure it doesn't rattle. The lazy ebay sellers need to go. Sad you even offered to pay more to have it well packed/shipped. Bubble wrap isn't that expensive from Walmart.

The issue is people don’t know what to charge for shipping on eBay
They charge to much no one will buy it
Not enough, won’t have enough to pack well
Better to charge more and get packed better

  • @ricknelsonm

Not a way to tell how it is packed until it was opened, it did not have any protection in the box, I think it would have been ok had they did what you requested for packing well.

my dearest bryan, PLEASE stop buying things from ebay! it is obvious that you can't trust these assholes, so you should stop setting yourself up for disappointment. you can't save them all, unfortunately. so, do what you can, and leave the rest. i bought a radio from you, and it was packed perfectly and it arrived undamaged. YOU know what you're doing, and i will always trust you. in my experience, NOBODY will ever care about things as much as you (or i) do. best to you, always.

I feel for you!....Seeing this makes me both angry and sorry, angry about all these idiot/careless/rude sellers, who does not, or aren´t even willing to, follow your packaging advices...And sorry about that poor record player.
I did had the same "experience" several times. Usually, for me it´s not the money, it´s more the equiplent that gets destroyed during shipping due to poor and sometimes even careless packaging (i expected more money on that, now i use packaging as my personal revenge). I want, better expect(!!), the unit to arrive in the same condition as it was when it had been at the seller´s place.
Also i usually write some stuff about packaging, especially when heavy untis and/or tubes are involved. I also did that one time when i bid and won an big philips EL6435 tube amp.
I usually don´t trust even double boxes, also i unserstand that ppl usually don´t have fitting boxes at home, if they aren´t much into selling and shipping.
I then aks them if it´s possible to put the unit in a heavy duty plastic bag and a 4inch wider carton in every direction and foam that thing entirely and close it right away. so when the foam sets it´ll usually seal the box right up and nothing is gonna harm the unit even if you drop the box.
I also ask if it´s possible to take out that tubes and ship it using another cardboard box well wrapped.
That poor 6435 i was talking about ealier was shipped to me like this: put in a flimsy cardboard box with just one layer of paper on top, and also only on top. That amp weight is about 25kg or 55 pounds as you say...and also the tubes had been left inside. Usually these type of amps doesn´t show up much, even on ebay...i searched over years for these, in order to have a pair....So a simple refund doesn´t justify a destroyed amp, at least not for me.
Arrived condition: chassis (3mm steel!) broken and bend several times, most tubes broken as they came loose and flown around in the chassis. Power tranny supports sheared off, one more hit and the tranny would have fly around as well. I stripped the chassis completely and gave it to a metalwork shop in order to fix the entire thing...cost me about the same what i paid for it at ebay...and did a complete rebuilt myself afterwards.
Actually i think i´m about to experience that again...i was lucky on a philips 6420 also a very early PA amp, even with two mercury vapor power rectifiers...let´s see how that tunes out. I also wrote some stuff about packaging and shipping...No response for seval days, and then he simply said: too late i already shipped it....Tubes left inside, and the usual newspaper layers as stuffing (at least i guess from the words he returned) while the amp weights also around 50pounds...

It was the USPS Smashers, just like the UPS Smashers, the same guys who sent a 1949 Emerson AM radio & RCA licensed 45 player that got destroyed back in 2013 due to heavy bakelite material in shipping.Bakelite is worst than plastic from the 1970's.

anselb2000 Bakelite is the worst compared to plastic from the 1960's and 1970's. I remember last year I had a GE AM clock radio from 1951 and it was all made of Bakelite. I hate Bakelite a lot. The Victor Victrola VV 8-4 from 1926 is far better than this Bakelite garbage from 1946, and it has a crank to wind it up and play a 78 the way it used to sounded back in the 1920's. And the rest of it was all wooded construction for a vintage piece of furniture.

bakelite once broken is almost impossible to repair. even jb weld doesn't work too good on it. sad to see vintage electronics destroyed from half assed packing. they can make the shipping trip if properly packed. many sellers accomplish that everyday w/o problems and have happy customers with return ebay business.

Julia M I buy stuff on eBay including cartoons on 8mm, 16mm and Super 8, vinyl LP's, 45's and 78's and VHS tapes, but not this. Bakelite is the worst than plastic from the 1970's. My GE Wildcat has hard plastic material in the design. 1970's was the worst decade for cheap plastic electronics like the way Crosley did it today. GE made these record players in the 1970's when they made the "Swingmate" ("Automatic") and the "Wildcat" and they were the anti-Crosley players.

julia m i'd give them a -5 if i could. i received a rca 45-ey-3 from ebay 2 months back that was half assed packed and arrived with damage to bottom from broken internal supports. seller did refund my money w/o a problem on receipt of return. $ 250.00 USD hard to forget. had it been packed right, no problem would have existed.easier to pack it right and tight and recycle used packing material.always plenty of it left over from other ebay items we buy as well as those styrofoam peanuts. not crazy about having to pick them up from the floor but they do work well in packing vintage electronics. i always go on overkill when packing a box.no excuse for this damage.
