My First Serge Lutens Perfume: Datura Noir, a gothic floral fragrance?

  • Forgive me for being so so chatty as I blabber on about my first perfume by Serge Lutens: Datura Noir (2001, nose: Christopher Sheldrake). I grew Datura flowers last year and am fascinated by something so beautiful and heady yet deadly! AKA moonflower, Brugmansia, angel's trumpet, devil's weed). This gorgeous perfume borders on deliciously ripe + about to turn against you! Incredible work of art!
    Do you own any Serge Lutens? Which do I need to purchase next? Is there such a thing as gothic perfumes?

    I love the way you review freely, I can’ term it, but it’s like having some tee and biscuits and listening to you have a discussion, very nice review. I have the bottle sitting next to me, bu I don’t want to spray it yet, the same with another of his, and I have aaa tired on the way, but saving them for special times. In answer to some of your questions, my second favourite is Mancera, and yes

      Hi there and thank you for watching and for this lovely post. The Serge Lutens line is all so interesting + artistic. Some I love but those I don’t I still really appreciate. They can be spendy so I am building my collection slowly. Fragrancenet is wonderful! 💛

    Like you I found a great price for my bottle of datura noir
    This truly is not a run of the mill summer beachy fragrance ,I get a green note in there that almost resembles a daffodil and it’s so fresh to me ,it stops it from being to heady or clawing on me .

    You are an amazing story teller! One of my new found hobbies during covid has been to watch perfume bloggers on youtube and while I've only watched this one video, I'm pretty sure you are the best of what I've run across.... I'm just starting to dip my toe into perfume buying again. ~15 years ago when I landed my first real corporate job I tried to learn to love perfume by blind buying my way into that world, which of course mostly landed me with stuff I really didn't like; so I walked away from perfume altogether for more than a decade. I did buy chergui a couple of years ago and while I like it a lot I wasn't blown away. (I guess I keep blind buying because I like the adventure?). On a very big impulse buy just tonight I bought 4 bottles, jeux de peau, daim blond, ambre sultan and arabie. 2 of those (daim blond and ambre sultan) I tried all those years ago (from small vial samples) and at that time I didn't even know the company- I just vaguely remembered their names and liking them. fingers crossed that they are what I remember. but after watching this video, I think I may need to go find a 5th. thanks

    Sorry, pressed submit too quick, and can’t find an edit button.but was saying in my humble opinion, I’d agree about there being a gothic fragrance, I guess any fragrance could be subjectively termed as something akin to the picture it draws in your mind :)

      Savor Salvage Scent i am a recent tuberose convert... 😂 i did not like it before. And i detect it IMMEDIATELY when i smell it. And i am so biased that when i see it in the notes i am like NOPE. But i tried Jaipur Chant by Sana Jardin and i like it ! I hated my sample of Le Beau Parfum by MFK. And when i revisited it, i love it now 😂 i hope this Datura Noir will be my gothic tuberose 🖤 will come back here tomlet you know once i get it ....

    Based on your reviews, I think your next SL perfume should be Feminite du Bois (the femininity of wood, though some think it' translates to feminine wood, which is incorrect). It is a highly regarded scent among professional noses and other perfume makers, and is thought to be the one perfume they wished to have made themselves. You may also be able to snatch a good price for it on eBay.

    I love your look! Datura Noir is what I am wearing at the moment ---- I also love Feminite du Bois and Sa Rose Majescule. IMO La Fille de Berlin has an antiseptic dry downthat is not my favorite, though I own it. I also own A la Nuit, which I haven't gotten into yet, because I am in love with Datura Noir and can wear nothing else. I am waiting for my bottle of Fleurs D'Oranger to try. I am also contemplating blind buying a bottle of Jeux de peau from the SL website --$290.00! But I want to own it.....

      Susan Masson so nice to “meet” you and thank you for your lovely feedback! I am itching to try the orange flower one (I love orange blossom and neroli scents) . I am LOVING Datura Noir-so heady and beautiful... almost creamy! Feminite du Bois sounds terrific, too. I’d also love to add Chergui + Ambre Sultan. Slowly. They are a little spendy, especially those bell jars! Thanks again for the kind message + hope you will stay in touch.

      @@savorsalvagescent2300 Yes -- I am a perfume hound --- I have about 100 bottles, and of course, that number is still growing. You really must try Feminite du Bois --- I LOVE that scent. You can get it nicely priced on fragrance.net --- it won't take a huge bite out of the budget. Sa Rose Majeste is an incredible rose scent --- you will NOT end up smelling like grandma --- it is really sexy. Chergui makes me a bit nervous --- I am not a fan of the masculine dry down that can occur with unisex fragrances --- La FIlle de Berlin has that barber shop quality at the end of it that I don't really like, even through it is a very sexy rose fragrance. Ambre Sultan, Santal Majescule, Five O'Clock Gingembre, Un Bois Vanille --- they all temp me all the time. But, any scent will tempt me..... I am looking forward to your next post!

    I like the idea of the bitterness...but whenever I find something with that note, it always fades away...I'd like there to be a lingering bitter note. Like how peaches are kind of light and clear and juicy, but also there's that bitterness, it never really isn't there. I like weird even medicinal smells like carbolic or creosote...the bitterness of blackberries is as important as their sweet flesh. Do you know any fragrances that might meet that description?

    • @savorsalvagescent2300
      @savorsalvagescent2300  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is one of the most interesting posts/reflections I’ve ever read about perfume. Thank you for it + let le think on it. One that comes to mind (sadly now discontinued ) is Bvlgari Black, with that rubber/industrial note. But as you suggest, it fades not long after application. I’m thinking about how you’ve described a peach (so true).
