I used to love watching Blockbusters as a youngster and enjoyed getting the answers right. Bob was a real inspiration, he had great rapport with the contestants and will be sadly missed. These are the type of programmes which should be screened more often instead todays youngers are watching trash like the X Factor with Simon Cowell revealing his hairy chest.
Bob you were an icon during the 1990s when this was on and I was doing my A Levels and University Degree. Only seems like yesterday, life is too short. RIP.
Bob was quick and smooth but without being unctious.. he managed to make a quiz for teenagers that was actually liked by teenagers. The questions were well balanced as well.
In the past few days, I was researching and compiling videos of programmes I watched as a child on my TH-cam channel. Blockbusters was one of these. I have clear memories of this gameshow. I still remember the ending's hand-clapping dance moves! RIP
I can't believe it! I decided to read his biography a couple of days ago just because I hadn't heard of him for so long, and now he's dead! I miss Anything Goes.
For us who grew up in the 80's we won't forget the "double entendre'" like "Can I have a P please Bob" but for us 80's kids we won't forget U. R.I.P Bob Holness
Lead guitarist on deep purples first Album, saxophonist on Baker Street and also played the metronome on sgt pepper. Other facts about Bob, he played James bond on the radio and made cameo appearences in Dr No, Moonraker and you only live twice. He was considered for the part of 'Flint'
I would agree with you there. Even though it was Americans who created the game, the original version in the US pales in comparison to this. Bill Cullen was an alright host, but he was already pretty old by the time Blockbusters came around.
R.I.P Bob Holnes. A remake of Blockbusters will not be the same without you :'( I just hope that Vernon Kay doesnt host the remake if there ever is going to be one, he will just kill it off as it wont be as exciting as the original Blockbusters was!
Frankly, all of the other remakes of Blockbusters post-1994 were game show blasphemy in my eyes, let alone a new remake planned for this year. NOBODY can match the devastating combination of smooth and friendly host Bob Holness, the awkwardness of Thatcher-era sociology students and the retro brilliance of those bright hexagons.
@kcirdrab Its main 5.10pm Time slot was taken over by Home and away. thus many ITV compaines were having trouble founding slots to broadcast the series. when it was axed in late 92 it took some ITV stations until Dec 93 to clear there backlog... ITV tried it could have easily found 3 slots ( one being a Saturday) to broadcast this great show
Simon Mayo is taking over the Challenge revival. Not sure how I feel about that. I think the bottom line is, nobody will ever come close to Bob Holness's standard.
@mrminsterley my mate baz said this to me earlier and I didn't have a clue what he was on about. Bob Holness did not play the sax solo on Baker Street. What's going on??
if the people behind blockbusters wanted to keep it 1 vs 2, they should have had 1 vs 2 on a 4x8 grid instead. or better still had had 1 vs 1 on a 4x4 grid. or had 2 vs 2 on a 8x8 grid (numbering same lettered squares if more hexagons than letters in the alphabet)
no wonder the double team with the blue hexagons won most of the time. i know bob holness passed away so no disrespect to him. but he chaired a silly quiz :(
@CollossusGFX Well It's just I thought if you were joking that would be too lame/pointless of a comment to make, I know to give you less credit next time :-D, byeeeee! :-D
most stupid quiz show ever. the double team with the blue hexagons has to get more hexagons than the single player with the white hexagons. but the amount the double team has to get is less than double the amount the single player has to get (5 not 8) with the single player needing 4 hexagons. this gives the double team an unfair advantage :(
RIP Bob holness I will definitely gonna miss you after wonderful years as host on blockbusters
Indeed, I used to come home from school in 1983 and watch it.
Give us an R I P please Bob.
Great memories from my childhood watching Blockbusters after I got home from school!
God speed!

Great show to watch when growing up as a kid!...RIP Bob
I had a Science teacher just like him!
I can't believe it! I decided to read his biography a couple of days ago just because I hadn't heard of him for so long, and now he's dead! I miss Anything Goes.
RIP Bob. So strange, I watched an episode of Blockbusters yesterday for the first time in like 15 years.
Yes, please do. Amazing to see how this whole quiz hasn't dated or lost its shine at all!
For us who grew up in the 80's we won't forget the "double entendre'" like "Can I have a P please Bob" but for us 80's kids we won't forget U. R.I.P Bob Holness

one of the best quiz shows but it would not be the same without bob
I remember trying to play this....and getting every thing wrong.
I would agree with you there. Even though it was Americans who created the game, the original version in the US pales in comparison to this. Bill Cullen was an alright host, but he was already pretty old by the time Blockbusters came around.
Thanks for the memories, Bob. RIP.
RIP BOB,, SAD TO SEE YOU GO

Teatime viewing in our house in the 80s! R.I.P Bob Holness.

He played a Baker on Saxophone Street
Rest in Ps Bob and the rest of the alphabet!! A true Gent xxxxxxxxxxx
Can I Have A R.I.P. Bob.
im going to make a facebook group saying bring back blockbusters
So sad, great James Bond
One of the best opening sequences to any game show, ever. Incredible CGI for the time.
4:08 - 4:16 Contestants have 8 seconds to put themselves on the hot spot.
Vernon Kay will bring this back one day, you wait and see it will happen.

@trimmytrab He's not, although he was the first James Bond (on a radio adaptation)!
@jamesfish18 Either him or Alexander Armstrong. Both are on enough TV gameshows.
Can I have a P, Bob ?
Was he off to play cricket after this?
@shazronnie Pleased to meet another contestant on a gameshow then uploaded onto youtube
no wonder the double team with the blue hexagons won most of the time. i know bob holness passed away so no disrespect to him. but he chaired a silly quiz :(
Sir Justin Bieber to host this cool show.
LOL!
"Can I Have A P Please, Bob?"
bob is now living in a retirement home
Are "gold runs" a slang word for pissing down your own leg???
@TheZubin66 "Were"... hehe.
What was the similar progamme on the other channel at the same time and presented by a woman?
@CollossusGFX Well It's just I thought if you were joking that would be too lame/pointless of a comment to make, I know to give you less credit next time :-D, byeeeee! :-D
lol, what a horridious prize.
@trimmytrab I had to check to this... not true.
