That's the most hilarious thing I've seen on the net in 2023. You could title your collab "Handsome Sweed & the Canadian Troll Beast" LOL

    6:43 Let me help with that snare.
    You’ll want a steep high pass filter around 80 Hz, it could be different depending on tuning. You want to find just the right range for that “pop” here. Use your ears 👂🏻 AROUND 80 Hz. Leave room for the bass and kick drum down there 👇🏻
    120 - 260 Hz is where the body of the snare is going to sit. Boost to give more body, or cut to thin it out. If you hear something “boxy” going on, get in there with your narrow bell curve.
    400 - 700 Hz can get muddy, cut this with a medium to wide Q or something to bring more clarity and let guitars come through.
    Around 800 Hz can have a “tinny” sound, you’ll want to use a narrow bell to reduce this if necessary too.
    2000 Hz and around there- is the ATTACK of the snare. The BANG! You’ll want to boost it if it sounds weak or something. If it’s ear piercing, cut it instead.
    Hope that helps.
    Note: Remember LDFC
    Listen
    Diagnose
    Fix
    If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

    • @marvinrockon
      @marvinrockon 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wanted to say something like that as well. If the Snare doesn't cut through with the processing at the Snare track alone, you could try to cut the frequencies you enjoy the most on the Snare, there's also the possibility of ducking. Try to look at the EQ of the other instruments like guitar and bass and see if cutting the favourite frequencies of the Snare can be cut narrowed down a little bit without affecting the sound in a bad way. If it does, make the curve less wide or reduce it less.
      Also don't be afraid of making it pop no matter what. I had to boost some things in mixes by 30db. On my last song some frequencies on the Snare by 12db. Don't boost more than you have to but just enough to make it mighty and cut through.

      Mixing in mono would help them get frequencies right

    • @marvinrockon
      @marvinrockon 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@goatsurgeon hell yeah. Mono is an often overlooked tool by beginners. If a mix sounds bad in mono, it's not a good mix. Remembering bad times with my first mixes. "Where are the toms gone? Why is it so dull!? What happened to those cymbals?! What is this crap?!"

    I was so happy to hear the approach you take/would take as RE: kids learning instruments. The world seems to be divided into "I ain't gettin' you no guitar" and "I believe every kid should learn an instrument......now GO PRACTICE!" and the kid's needs or desires are not even taken into account. Yours is THE right approach, not just for musical instruments, it's generalizable to any number of parenting questions. Thanks for being good.

    18:00 in case anybody cares. An avarage cpu and cheap usb interface will give you small enough latancy to have fun with plugins. Also USB 2.0 already has plenty of power. If you upgrade, first get a good interface for low latency, then get a good cpu to run crazier plugins.

    The world needs to know about Bell Witch, that band improved my life so freaking much. Can’t thank you enough for shouting out Mirror Reaper :) but Dylan’s big two handed chords can get pretty feccin complicated...playing along accurately may be tough for most beginners as his style is deceptively sophisticated and requires a lot of split coordination

    Hej Ola! I love your videos and I appreciate a lot your natural manner and great jokes with all kinds of stuff, especially how you deal with haters. Since you've introduced a female edition, I would like to post a question for you to eventually include in some of your future FAQs:
    How do you deal with the lack of motivation to play, if such thing has ever happened to you?
    I believe that every musician who happened to play for many years, like myself, eventually suffers from this kind of problem and it might be useful for many people if you have any cool Swedish tips on the topic :) Tack så mycket!

    You don't need a top of the line newest spec'ed machine to run a DAW lag free. Reaper will show you in real time how much CPU power plugins are using, it's never that much. I think the main thing is have enough RAM and have a decent interface. My main recording rig is a 10+ year old former workstation pieced together from parts my office was getting rid of. It runs plugins fine and records without latency through a Focusrite 6i6 (2nd gen) via USB 2.0 on Windows 7. It's only a Xeon dual core with a 500 GB non-SSD HDD, but it has 12 GB RAM. Back in its day, it was a good machine, but nowadays most cheapos could blow it away.

    Hey Ola! Greetings from India. I think you are amongst the very few artists who is strictly stuck on to playing Metal without giving a crap about the exploring-new-sound shit ( sadly like the new Opeth, you get the point) and I really love that and I'm glad that there's someone that I can look up to. Talking about Doom...
    What do you think about the DOOM soundtrack by Mick Gordon? Also do you agree that metal is a little oversatured by slow insanely low tunings and technical riffs? There's almost nothing in between anymore. I miss the groove, what makes your head boppin and really get into it.
    It all sounds cool but there's not much that makes you move nowadays. That's why we all still love Pantera. The scene focused to much about sounding evil.

    I was in a band with 4 guys and 1 girl. It caused tension because when we started getting media attention they ignored me and the rest of the band who wrote the lyrics and songs and focused 100% on her when all she did was do kind of backing singing, interviewed her only etc. So if that girl is reading this and you start to notice the same thing make sure you say "I'm not the only person in the damn band, why are you focusing on me?" rather than letting it inflate your ego. If you don't bring the rest of the band in it won't feel like a team anymore, it'll feel like your band even though it isn't. A band consists of everyone. You have to think about this political crap.

    To answer BMWfilmz question, It's great to have a female in a and. But also, there can be a downside. Band members could start to like her or try to get a date or something which isn't a good idea when your in a band. It messes up the band BUT I'm sure there have been bands that had no problem with that. I think it's awesome to have females in bands. Just make sure the guys won't fall in love when you walk in for practice ;)

    Hey Ola. On your question about females in bands. I play in a 5 piece Power Metal band in Western Canada (Called Syryn) with a female singer and a female bass player. I think the band dynamics are great and we look out for eachother like brothers and sisters. If anything, it brings out more females to our gigs and our audiences are a big mix now of males & females. I see more women now playing metal nowadays compared to years ago and it's refreshing to the metal scene.

    Also, go listen to Sybreed

    i was in a band with one girl in it. if you're alike and become good friends there should be little problems. it will only get weird if people fall in love, sexual tensions and all. and being in a relationship with a bandmember can create a whole lot of problems too.
    all of us ended up having relationships outside the band, so it worked out pretty well.
    what also worked out pretty well was that she was one of the better musicians among us, if she had trailed behind i think there would have been more issues.

  • @Lectwar6
    @Lectwar6 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Ola,
    I wont tell you how to raise your kids when it comes to music but if you dont mind I would like to offer my perspective and I hope you get a chance to read this. I am a guitarist and bassist, picked up bass about when i was 16 or so with little to no prior music experience. In my time playing I have had the opportunity to jam, write, and observe other people my age through school and my early 20's who started not just earlier, but had lessons. The differences between us and the discipline employed through our times playing music is staggering. My dad is a keyboard player and I honestly resent him a little bit for not pushing me towards music earlier because that 8-13 age range is so crucial for learning. In fact, he actually got my brother and I a guitar around when i was 8 or 9, but did nothing to guide us. No books, lessons, nothing. Of course it didnt get touched. Simply having the guitar there was not enough to create the SPARK for me to suddenly become interested but that didnt mean 6 years later I wouldnt become obsessed. Start signing them up for lessons in things so that you can gauge their interest in things. Martial arts, sports, music, whatever. Don't wait for them to chase it because that might not even be how they manifest their interest in things yet. Its not so much as forcing them into things as it is exposing them to it, and that is healthy.

    For the question about being the only woman in a band. I've been in a band with a female bassplayer, she was just as much part of the band as anyone else, surely communication is a bit different naturally (less blunt) but besides the attraction factor that may or not be present and could become difficult there's no difference.. Bandmembers need to click musically, and that's the most important, if that's the case and you're good and passionate at what you do there's only good times to be had.. :)

    I had a very good female singer in a band in the early 2000s playing 70s, 80s & 90s hard rock and metal covers. She had a seasoned & powerful voice, but it was weird with her singing songs that had more masculine themes. She adjusted her voice for the songs, but, again, it was just odd at times given the lyrical content. Hope that shed some light into the realm of females in bands.

      The shape is exactly the same as far as I know, the differences are in the hardware. Solar have their own custom pickups, which are really nice, don't know how they compare to the Washburn series. The other thing I noticed different is the bridge for fixed bridge models.

    ola, what is your opinion on the recent passing of Oli Herbert (all that remains)? Do you think his death was an accident or even murder? as his wife doesn't seem to be upset about it and could be involved with his death

    Dick Lövgren of Meshuggah also seems to have the same sun tattoo on the right elbow. Putry cool.
    Question: how do you like your cover songs? A full 100% copy of the song, a small deviation from the song, or a complete rewrite of the song?

    We have a girl to do some vocals in my folk/blues band. It didnt made us nervous but I had to stop burping and farting in the microphone, and let me tell you, it took out at least half of the fun of being a musician. But she has a very nice voice so, worth it.

    Interestingly enough, many find doom metal in a big sense HARDER to play than faster music. Most people have a REALLY hard time keeping time when playing slower. Especially the REALLY slow stuff, like Sunn O))), I have no idea how they manage to keep time in such ridiculously slow tempos without a real beat going.
    Playing slow also bares more of your technique/how clean your playing is in a way that can be covered up by just playing fast.
    I would actually like to see how Ola fares playing a REALLY slow song, like 60-80 BPM or slower.
    I myself struggle playing that slow, as I always want to go faster and feel more comfortable around 130-140+.

    To my own experience, having a girl in a band is great as long as the other members can consider her as a musician and not as a simple piece of meat.

    Ola, great videos, great hair and great burps! I totally agree about beginners starting with doom metal, but for a very different reason. While doom is physically easier to play, given the ultra-slow tempos, it is much harder than fast metal for the very same reason. In order to play it properly you have to have excellent timing. I learned more about playing in time, and dragging the beat in my stint in a doom band than I did in my 25 years previously playing fast metal(yeah, I’m not a youngster like you).
    Doom is a great way to work on your timing. You should try it sometime and I’d bet you’d be surprised how difficult it is to play at such slow tempos. Also, glad to hear you’re getting the tribal tattoo removed-you’re cooler than that!

    I just saw Bell Witch perform that 90 min song live last week. They arranged seating. :D Anyway, Bell Witch is funeral doom, almost drone metal, doom can be more "fun". Check out Potion, my new favourite.

    It's hard being a music/audio dad and not try to infuse some interest from a young age, and kids do not have to enjoy what you enjoy so it's indeed good to let them make up their own minds and just introduce them to various things and activities they might enjoy over time.. A dislike or aversion can be result of pushing a kid into some hobby they do not want.. My 2 year old son loves spending time in the studio.. Have to make sure all settings are saved and noted because he can surely mess things up, I let him do it anyways.. :) I also sacrificed my electric piano to him as he likes playing with it so he can do whatever he feels like on it (he figured out the rhythm section pretty fast which he likes the most).. He doesn't like it when I play guitar tho, he mutes my strings while I'm playing as he sees it as attention that could be more focused on him.. :P Or maybe my playing is just not up to par.. :D Riff of the day's a classic, maybe next time do Old? Have to say that Machine Head Burn my Eyes album is in my all time Top 10, amazing overall and still stands in modern metal..
