    Hello friends,
and welcome back to Swiftlessons for another rhythm guitar tutorial. In today's session I'll be showing you how to perform a standard 12 bar progression in a Jazz-Blues style. Together we'll review the basic blues version of the progression, before adding in jazzy voicings, passing chords, and substitutions. Let's get started!

Good Lord that was enlightening! Especially the turnaround ending on the 5+. It's astonishing, after teaching myself how to play Blues throughout the past 40 years, a born and bred Chicago boy like me should have my mind opened up to a whole new realm of tonal phrasing by being introduced to a relatively simple deviation from the standard Blues turnaround.
I've spent less than 20 minutes adapting my standard chops to fit what I've learned from this instructional video -- and I'm breezing along with eaze.
    What a revelation.
Thank you. I really mean it in all sincerity. Thank you.

This is really something special, Rob. Like others have said, playing the 12 bar blues can admittedly get a bit boring at times. This lesson shakes things up and reveals so many possibilities. Breaks us out of our ruts. Thank you and have a great weekend!

I can memorize the progression and the chord "shapes" are easy, but I have no idea why something is a 13th, or diminished, or augmented. In other words, I can't read and have no idea what the math is that is, of course, the baseline determinant of theory. I don't know hoe to use intervals in any intelligent way, I can really even define what an interval is. I know some basic positions on the neck, but have to count frets to see where a given note is. I know about triads, and have memorized how to make a maj, minor, 5th, 7th and 9th, but move through those changes with a brain damaged slowness. I have been playing over 40 years and have learned a lot of tricks, and have taught myself how to play any of the above mentioned triads in 5 places on the neck for any chord. But it does not come as naturally as speaking, and I don't think I will ever have the fluency that goes with mastery. Luckily I have a good ear which helps with single note phrasing, but the art of beautiful
chord progressions, and all the infinite subtleties and possibilities, I'll have to reserve for another lifetime. I know some people who know a lot of scales and theory that can't improvise and just sound mechanical, like a cheap player piano, and I just try to sound good but don't have the intellectual basis. This can be incredibly frustrating. Rhythm guitar in many ways is a lot more complex then so called "lead" soloing. Oh well.
