      Hi, so I paid 300 to a guy for this fork and the rebound damper shaft has a leak. Do you have any idea where to find a replacement? I swear the ROCKSHOX rebound damper replacement could possibly fit but I haven't found any information on mixing components from other forks. Any advice or information would be helpful. Thanks for the amazing thorough video on disassembly. Even with the video I still tried and failed to do it on my own, but your video was a good guide when I ran into hiccups.

    SIckbiker, I talked to Risseracing, the US distributor for RST, about the plastic cap on the bottom of the spring side of the Renegade which is the same cap as your First fork. It is indeed removed with a pin tool, mine are pin pliers, but mine has longer pins than the one you showed. It comes off counter clockwise.

    This is the second time i've used this video to maintain my RST F1RST fork.
    Mine is COMPLETELY different tho, it's a prototype, and the plastic chamber you screw to the top cap on the air side is just a loose aluminium piston on my fork.
    My hydraulic lower has started leaking through the rebound adjuster, so i took out the original hollow allen bolt and replaced it with a regular bolt with locktite.
    Filled the hydraulic lower up completely, then pumped the fork slightly to allow for a miniscule amout of air at the top, now the lockout is super solid, yet the damping is fast and responsive again.
    I'll buy a completely different fork one day, these forks never worked from the factory, and it may be bechause they are prototype forks that shouldn't have been sold, especially on a brand new consumer bike.

    I have replaced the damper lower seals in the stanchion in the plastic piece that seals the stanchion and the sliding shaft. It was pretty easy. No more leaking from the lower leg. Now I need to service the air spring, I am glad to see you demonstrate the air spring removal!

  • @randomchannel1712
    @randomchannel1712 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Let me clear up some stuff
    1 Rst tutorials are very old and they showcase an older ocr version (the one you have as a sample)
    as you can see the compression assembly has some build in volume reducers and thus the lower oil quantity
    The newer generation of OCR has to be filled with 125ml for RST FIRST And 135-150 for titan
    As for the air assembly adding oil is not a good idea as rst forks DO NOT SEAL THE LOWER LEG WITH THE ROD on the air side so oil is just going to leak out (although adding some oil on top of the air piston makes it way smoother)
    Just grease it using slicoleum or any silicone grease
    The same applies to the socket fitted on the rebound assembly it is only applicable to old FIRST models
    The oil you should use is 5wt instead of 10wt that they use this will transform the fork
    The part you took out of the air chamber is a volume reducer very old technology following rst from the very old days
    There is a very easy way to put the right amount of oil to your fork on rst ones
    Step 1 Set your rebound assembly so that your travel + 1cm sticks out from the botom
    Step 2 measure your ocr compression assembly length and remove it form the top of the crown
    Step 3 fill with oil up to the designated point so that in normal operation the ocr compression assembly always stays submerged
    Any way if you have any more questions feel free to ask me i am an RST GURU OF SORTS

    You can use a little bit of oil on your negative spring side or I've found that you can apply a small amount of light duty grease (non corrosive) around your rubber seal and it will glide smooth. Great video brother! LOVE The breakdown on how the front air suspension actually works. Well done!

    Thanks alot.I just use thr Rst first air in the same day you replace your new fork.

    Remote lock out doesn't need any more.

  • @patchesthejaybird8431
    @patchesthejaybird8431 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I would start at 90 ml and then add oil if the lockout did not work. The lockout will not work properly if the oil level is too low. Oil volume may depend on the length of travel? A longer travel model may have more volume in its chambers? Other than that thought I am mystified by the disparity between the measured volume and the stated volume. I like the design of this fork, it is pretty easy to service. Its not the best performing fork I have used, but not bad for the price. Aspects I really like: The damper isn't under pressure with some kind of bladder, and it doesn't require special tools, and is not an unserviceable cartridge unit.

    I´ve got the F1RST (Platinum series) 26" on my retro hardtail - my fork also suffered from the heavy sticktion - i´ve serviced it recently for the first time and got rid of it. In the Platinum-series the hydraulic-damping unit is screwed onto the bottom of the right stanchion - if this screw is too tight the sticktion occurs.

  • @Lezz015
    @Lezz015 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Oil amount depends of many factors like:
    1) wheel size
    2) fork travel
    3) damper design, i mean damper lenght
    So you should add such amount of oil to dive off a compression damper valve. In other case you will (partial) lose lockout/compression or will get hydraulic shock.
    If you have question about what to use in air spring, you just can check this with oil with different viscosity, also try with grease ;)
    Also, there is two different sides on retaining. One with soft edge another sharp. So sharp side MUST abut to exit to prevent pressing out.
    And why you didn't add oil or grease to the lowers???
    If you have any questions just let me know.

And i already have a good capable Hard Tail XC Bike with a good durable fork and i actually wanted to build myself a slopestyle Dirt Jumper mountain bike and the question is, is it really necessary to have a average fork like in a price of 189€ or above because im gonna drive it with 2,4 tyres 26" and 65 PSI and im only gonna use it for flowy jumps. Should i really invest for a good suspension or does a Marzocchi 110mm fork with a little bit stiff preset would do the job ?.

    How can you adjust the rebound on the F1RST?
    My factory set up seems very hard and on fast rocky ground my bicycle gets hammered and is very painful sometimes even when my remote lockout is in the most soft setting..
    What rebound is better to soften the suspension small or big and how to set it up?
    Does the hydraulic fluid play any part in it or the air ?If i lower the air compression will that make the ride more plush?
    Thank you..

      @judechandler5102 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      don't know much about forks this cheap, but yes less air will make the fork more plush, but you risk bottoming it out on bigger drops or impacts.

    • @judechandler5102
      @judechandler5102 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      oh and also, you want compression adjustment not rebound. rebound is how fast it comes up. you want it to be faster going down so it eats up bumps better.

    My airfork single air on non driveside (coil) i cant take off the nut lower it just spin. what to do?

    • @patchesthejaybird8431
      @patchesthejaybird8431 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Put some air in the air chamber. The pressure should help to hold the shaft so lower nut can be broken free. I believe that's how I had to do it when I rode my fork down. Don't forget to purge the air before opening the air chamber.

    HI, I need help. I am about to buy this fork...The Remote Lockout option where you cant adjust compression......, It says the travel is 80-100-120 mm, However it doesnt say in the manual how much travel has without adjusting it. Does it come with 120 and you can reduce it to 100? or it comes with 100 and you have to enhance it to 120?? I dont get it!!!

    • @randomchannel1712
      @randomchannel1712 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      IT CAN you just need to swap the RL remote with the SRL remote and you will have compression adjustment

    • @randomchannel1712
      @randomchannel1712 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the fork comes as 100 and you can increase it to 120

    17:28 *Never* put force on your fork without a wheel in it as shown here if you don't want your lowers to deform or break...

  • @tsarouxaz
    @tsarouxaz 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    you did not show where to put back the oil and how. another mistake is you put presure to the system to remove the bottom bolt and then you instruct your audience to unthread the valve asembly without pointing out that you have to release the pressure!!

    Friend... do you know what is the max tire width f1rst fork?

    • @nekomeido
      @nekomeido 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on the size of the fork. I only know that my 26" RST F1RST just fit 2.2 tire width but the 27,5" and 29" versions go bigger.

    • @alvaroruizruiz7538
      @alvaroruizruiz7538 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      On my 26 100mm f1rst I have a kenda nevegal 2.35 tire, but when closing the wheel I have to kinda center it so it doesn't rub on the fork, other than that, it works just fine.
