    I bought a pair of these JBL L-220s when I was in the VA hospital rehabbing after a spinal cord injury. I had them in the room with me. It was a two man room. The nurses would bring them out to the picnic area on gurneys. I spent almost a year in the hospital. I still have them in my garage. I need to get them re-coned. They have a very limited sweet spot. I would get compliments from all kinds of people about how good they sounded. Thanks for the memories!

    I had a pair of L220's and Disco's and they were the best speakers I owned. I liked them better than my 4311's just too big.
    Awesome system.

    I like to go back and revisit this great video from time to time....I have this exact speaker combination (L220/B460) and can attest to its excellence. Rock on!

      jbl 250ti are a better pair

    • @pmakres
      @pmakres 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree the 250ti is a fabulous loudspeaker. The predecessor to the 250ti, the L250, was introduced about 6 months after I bought my 220's. I went and listened to a pair and was very impressed...but I had just bought my 220's, so..... In any event I have admired the L250/250ti over the years. Late last year I rebuilt my L220 crossovers using high end caps, and precision tolerance resistors. This made a huge improvement, especially after a few weeks of break in. I also made new grilles with a cutout for the lens, like the optional grille that was supposedly offered by JBL back in the day. I wouldn't dream of parting with them now...

    • @kinnster7652
      @kinnster7652 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      pmakres the b460 sub is very weird jbl makes a new crossover for it that improved drastically over the old ones. My dad picked it up and the sound quality went up so much. He has a 2 carver amps I'm not sure of the model but he has 1000 watts per channel going into the sub and 700 into the speakers it's insane

    • @pmakres
      @pmakres 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      KINNSTER Yes the original crossover was the BX63...them came the improved BX63A. I acquired one of these but am now using it on a different system with a JBL 2241 based sub. I now am using a Sumo Delilah crossover with my B460 sub and powering it with a McIntosh MC501 amp. The Sumo Delilah crossover was made for the Sumo Samson sub and closely emulates the BX63A slope. I believe it is better than either of the JBL crossovers.

    In 1984 I had a pair of L-112 and a pair of L-220, I personaly preffer the L-112 because they are the most natural sounding JBL speaker so far, the L-220"s 076 ring radiator tweeter is a bit colored but my major concern with the 220's was their midrange too colored for me, otherwise is a beautiful design, one of the most impresive things about the 112's are their tweeter, they sound the same as 30 years ago well extended, the only caveat of the 112's is that the midrange at about 2.5khz is hard.

    • @ontherun8
      @ontherun8 ปีที่แล้ว

      @chickenwatt yes, your post is 9yrs old, yet my answer could be of help to other; most of the times the harshness heard from the mid (any) is due to pots (L-pad on this case) gone bad and/or dirty. With the tweeters as the ears are less sensible to their frequency range the problem is less or even no hearable.

    I bought my JBL4311B when I was in my teen (and it was long time ago), they are still here and still doing great but I found a couple of L220 for sale and even tho I have no room for both I am so tempted, your video playing one of my fav albums from the good old times and, ohhhhh, hold on, is that an SP9? I bought a used one a year ago and coupled it with a push-pull of KT88, delicious!!!
    Ok, this makes me want the L220 more and more!!!

    Nice system! Woofer needs to go in the left corner, ports pointing 8 inch's to the right.

    • @refreshinglyunfamili
      @refreshinglyunfamili 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +tgifford The B460 does not need corner loading, as another 9db in that range would render the low bass overpowering, and might cause the turntable to start a feedback loop.

    I want to tell you that I've listened to this video more than a few times. I sold my AR SP9 years ago and haven't ever had nice Conrad-johnson amp like yours but your system sounds FANTASTIC. I love the room aesthetics too. Very well done. I finally have my B460 sub/bx63/L220 setup but also now have the 250Ti so it will be fun to compare the two. I did upgrade my woofers with the JBL Le14H3 and it is a great upgrade. Now that I finally have some great amps it will be fun to recreate your video sometime. Tube amps are Bob Carver Black Beauties, and solid state are Pass Labs XA200.5. Not sure what to use for the subwoofer yet...Just wanted to say thanks for this video. If you wouldn't mind I'd like to know what you used to record stereo? Thanks. I need a device to allow for HD recording with great audio. Cheers!

    • @pmakres
      @pmakres 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I agree they are great speakers but can tell you first hand that the B460 makes them even greater. There's a fabulous synergy and the lower midrange, as well as overall headroom is improved.

  • @wildernessbound8877
    @wildernessbound8877 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice speakers: The JBL L220's stand alone, don't need the hip hop bass. Hope you keep them, if you sell them you will come to regret it. I would get something made to get them up off the floor,just a few of inches.

    • @refreshinglyunfamili
      @refreshinglyunfamili 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Wilderness Bound In truth, if you have ever used a quality equalizer/analyzer, such as a Soundcraftsmen AE 2420, you would know how much bass is rolled off in the music most people are used to. I am not saying it is a pleasant sound, but to get FLAT below 40Hz, it takes a large SPL.

    • @wildernessbound8877
      @wildernessbound8877 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Marc Klink I wasn't inferring anything about how much bass the JBL220 put out, I was inferring that they don't need a subwoofer they are good on their own. Don't get so technical

    • @soulintake
      @soulintake 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@wildernessbound8877 bro, that wasn't even very technical... chill. The speakers can't play the lowest notes on their own with an even volume level... so you add a subwoofer to fill in the gap. Was that simple enough for you?
