    I have to sew all my own pants because ready-to-wear never fits. This video has definitely been the answer to my situation and will make the process easier with fewer alterations. I did an upper body form using paper mache but I like this method much better. I would use plastic bags though instead of newspaper. It forms better to the body's shapes. Thank you for sharing!

    Masterful! Your knowledge of videotaping and editing and teaching are awesome--in addition, of course, to your superb fashion design and sewing/tailoring skills. I will use this video as the model for any video demos that I produce. You have set a high standard, indeed! Thank you! (BTW, I have zero interest in diy fashion and will never do the type of work that you do, but I watched in fascination because your tutorial is such an exemplar of a great video demo.)

    • @skylark741

      I think the purpose of draping the cover is so that you have the grid lines like you would find on the dress form (for pattern making). Tights would work too as long as you can clearly see the lines drawn on the foam through them (and if they don't run when pinned multiple times).

    Love this. I've seen the duct tape dress forms, but this is the first one I've seen for pants. I like the use of masking tape. I think it works better than duct tape.
    Last year my daughter & I used the duct tape method to make a quick corset for Halloween costume. We use plastic wrap under the tape. Never thought of using newspaper.
    Originally we planned on making a pattern from the duct tape form, but time was running short, so we just cut it up the back, reinforced the edge & added a lace. (So lucky you can buy duct tape in any color.)

    • @noelnova
      @noelnova  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You could do that although newspaper is thinner and easier to wrap around all the curves of your body. The folds and creases don’t feel uncomfortable. If you don’t mind an unfinished look of the form then you can go for the panty hose to cover it.

    I am so glad I found this! I have such a hard time sizing for pants because my hip/waist difference is like 11 inches. I'm definitely going to make myself one of these! But question, there doesn't seem to be much space left in between the upper thigh? Won't that be difficult to fit the crotch? I've seen people suggest using an IV bag stand also so I'll probably try that! Thank you for posting this tutorial!

    • @noelnova
      @noelnova  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mine had some room between the two legs. You can also cut the foam a bit in that area to create more space. Or cut the other leg right at the crotch.

  • @micksmom2293
    @micksmom2293 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is something I have been wanting to make for myself for a while using expanding foam. I was delighted to come across your video! I have used expandind foam to make millinery blocks from old hats that I bought at the thrift store. I used Pam to coat the inside of the hat before putting in the foam. It helped release the foam mold afterwards. I wonder if spraying down the inside of the newspaper form with Pam or a quick release spray would help prevent the newspaper from sticking to the foam so much? Just a thought. Anyway, bravo! Loved the video. Thanks for sharing!

    • @noelnova
      @noelnova  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching! I don’t know if that would have worked. I royally oiled my skin when I applied the newspaper so it was soaked with oil. I was hoping that would help the expanding foam to release well from the mold. There is also the chance of an ingredient in the spray reacting negatively with the foam (if it’s not just oil based), causing it not to expand properly in certain areas.

    Hi Noelnova! This is genius!!!!! I wanted to make the body double dress form but was wandering if I had to use the plaster bandages as you did in your "DIY body double dress form" video? Will the paper and tape work as you used in this video or can I use leggings and a fitted shirt? Thank you for such an amazing video!

    • @noelnova
      @noelnova  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The plaster bandages are definitely not necessary. It created more of a mess (with water and having to wait for it to harden etc.) so I wanted to come up with a way that would eliminate that and masking tape was the result. Masking tape will work for any body part. You can wear leggings and a fitted shirt, the paper is not necessary in that case. Just as long as you have something covering your bare skin so the tape will not stick to it. It can be very painful to get tape off your skin. I would wear something of very light fabric (maybe also). The thicker the fabric of the shirt/leggings the more inches/cm it will add to the mold. You want the replica to be as true to your current shape as possible.

  • @Spacereform3
    @Spacereform3 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This is genius for sure! But why not stretch the fiber fill to make it much thinner, and reduce the thickness? And is there anything else we could use that wouldnt stick to the foam during the molding process? what about just applying oil to the skin and putting the tape on directly? Would the foam still stick to the tape? Thoughts anyone?

    • @noelnova
      @noelnova  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I did stretch the fiberfill a bit. The best I know of is to use fiberfill to account for all the holes and bumps on the form and to smooth it out. The form will always have holes here and there, so keep that in mind. There are different weights (thickness) of fiberfill available. It’s very light/airy and can be pressed flat. Also keep in mind that the covering is like leggings. The stretch of the fabric helps to pull the fiberfill closer to the actual form.
      You can oil the skin and apply the tape directly, just know that if you don’t apply enough oil it will be painful to get the mold off because it’s sticking to your skin and hair. If you apply too much oil the tape may not stick properly. Either way I don’t think the tape will to stick to the form like it did to the newspaper after the foam has expanded but it’s possible. It doesn’t really matter if you’re covering the form. Just letting it be as is without fiberfill and covering is an option but not really a pleasant sight, given that the expanding foam never fully fills the mold in certain areas.
      You could wear a thin pantyhose but could still experience pain when getting the mold off. The skin will be somewhat protected but your hair can still stick to the tape. You could always wear leggings or thicker pantyhose, just know that this too can add inches/cm to the form. Also, make sure it's one you can part with because you may cut the leggings/pantyhose by accident to get the mold off of your body. Another thing I can think of is to measure the form and cut some inches/cm off where needed to combat the extra thickness of the fiberbill and covering.
      The result of this tutorial is my best test and tried version of several (failed/ uncomfortable) tries. I’m sure someone else has other great ideas to share with us. Maybe the best thing would be to just give something a try. You may come up with ideas as you go. For anyone that does, I hope you come back and share them with us.

    This is very cool! Is there any reason you didn't use plastic cling wrap instead of paper? I would think that would be easier to remove. I wish I knew the conversions of some of this to US measurements (I wish US would have switched to metric a long time ago).
    Where do you mark for the knee? Center of knee or top of knee?
    The PVC stand is genius!
    I wonder if it would have been easier to insert the metal pipe before doing the spray foam but it might have gone in at the wrong angle.
    I am curious as to why only one leg was done (although I suppose it was so there would only need to be one pip? Looks like a pipe could be used for each leg and the PVC horizontal pieces could be longer (as needed) to have the right distance.
    I also wonder if you could use transparent pantyhose or tights instead of sewing something entirely new. Then you could see the marks through them and remark on the outside and maybe do some hand-stitching to make it conform in places.
    I'd love to see one like this that could attach to a torso form and also have arms (that can detach).

      Paper enables the foam to expand properly. Not sure what you mean about where to mark the knee. At 12:12 to 12: 20 you can see how I marked the knee.
      You can insert the pipe while filling the form but it is difficult to keep in the right place as the foam hardens. Once the foam is expanded it would be close to impossible to correct that without damaging the form because the foam sticks to the pipe. Taking it out means taking out bits and pieces from the inside as well.
      I made the dressform to drape patterns. To make patterns I only need one leg. You can use tights and mark the lines on it, but what I made is what I wanted and needed for the purpose of making patterns. Feeling seams that indicate certain helplines while draping is more helpful to me than working with marked lines.
      Measurement conversions you can google.

      @@noelnova My question was not clear: I saw that you marked for the knee but I was wondering what the proper place to mark is-- at the crease at the back of the knee (basically center of the front) or at the top or bottom of the knee?
      The explanations on the rod & foam, partial leg, and stitches instead of drawn-on marks all make sense. Thank you.

      Oh ok thanks for clarifying. In my view it seemed obvious that the kneecap and the back crease are the knee level. But the thing about making something yourself is that you can decide where you want to put certain markings that are helpful to you or that make sense to you.

      @@noelnova Thanks! That's what I thought, but I wasn't certain because once it's off your body I couldn't see the lump for the knee cap. I would probably mark the entire knee cap on my own model just so it would make more sense to me visually. That way I would know the height and width of the knee cap.

    Brilliant! Im sure masking tape is much easier to work with than duct tape.

      Yes definitely. Also, it doesn’t work well with duct tape. The expanding foam doesn’t fully expand inside the mold.

    Can I ask why you took off the masking tape part of the molding? Wouldn’t it be easier and relatively accurate to just leave it on?

      I made the leg form to drape patterns. It needed to be pinnable. The mold was pretty hard, thus making it difficult for pins to easily go through. Also when you pin through several layers of tape the adhesive of the tape sticks to the pins and it’s difficult to get it off.

    What brand of expanding foam did you use?

    • @noelnova
      @noelnova  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Spectrum. It's a brand you'll probably only find in Europe. I think the brand does not matter. Any kind will do.
