Hope you liked this episode, freaks and geeks! It had been so long since we talked about The Little Mermaid I honestly forget how much I dig her story (both the old and new versions). Make sure to leave me YOUR thoughts in a comment down below - including who YOU think taught Ariel how to use a toilet!

Can you do the messed up origins for the following korean fairy tales?
Gyunwoo and Jingneo (견우와 직녀) Young Master Willow (버들 도령)
      Heungbu and Nolbu (흥부와 놀부)
The Sun and The Moon (햇님과 달님)
The Rebel Hong Gil Dong (역적 홍길동)
      Woodcutter and Fairy/Angel (선녀와 나무꾼)
The fairy tale about Rebel Hong Gil Dong (역적 홍길동) became a korean drama as Rebel: thief who stole the people
and Heungbu and Nolbu (흥부와 놀부) became a korean movie but the actual fairy tales are quite different compared to the movie/drama because the plot for the movie was about "What if these were things that actually happened and the tales were just brought down as children stories as time went by?
And the drama was just a fantasy drama, but interestingly, the story of Rebel Hong Gil Dong had a specific timeline of what king was ruling then (king yeonsan *gun (pronounced as *goon but fast and shortly) so my theory is that what happened in the story and the main character was probably what people during that timeline (of when that person was king) hoped had existed for them because in historical writings it is said that the king was a complete tyrant and it was one of the terrible times of rule for the people of the land so he didn't get a new name (known in history) as a king and was left with the title "gun" stuck to his name instead. There is more to the king's backstory, but that's way too long tmi so I hope you can (possibly, hopefully) cover that in (maybe) another video (pls).
Also, both drama and movie is fictional.

Ariel, as a name, comes from Hebrew, it means "Lion of God" which refers to several passages of the Torah, basically it refers to a spiritually gifted person, a strong person in the eyes of the Abrahamic God, whatever name you have for him. Not God of air, like some here have said, because the whole thing is Hebew not just the "el" part.

I grew up with these stories, I'm from Denmark and in school, we were analyzing, comparing stories, comparing to HCA's own life and combing through the life of HCA to find out where and why he wrote the stories.
I remember my Danish teacher saying: "The reason why you should accept the horror and pain the mermaid goes through is that nothing we want in life comes easy or without sacrifice in some way. She had to fight for her place amongst the humans and she gained a soul. Remember that in HCA's time, the soul was the most important thing and what makes us humans, she becomes an angel for her pure heart and her love towards not only the prince but also humanity."
I really love this story, because her words made me understand and in some ways, I saw how her story could help me when I felt like I had tough choices to make that would mean giving up on something and letting go.

I find Andersen’s works to be very interesting. People may dislike him and his work, but I find it shows truth, and hidden meaning about life. The struggles we endure to become that which we are happy with. Life is not perfect. Fairytales from movies are fun, but they do not normally teach true suffering, and how to Conquer it.

HCA has an unfortunate reputation of writing only tragic tales when so many of his stories end up happily or at least bittersweet (including Little Mermaid, because the mermaid does get rewarded for her efforts by becoming a sylph. She doesn't just die). His stories aren't 'messed up'

  • @rachelle_banks

I think the prince having Ariel sleep outside his bedroom on the cushion is also about the author showing that the prince wasn't trying to "make a move". It reinforces the idea that there was no romantic attraction.
I also think it depects her as a pet/responsibility as well. Like Jon brought out, the latter aspect likely influenced the former.
    This is good.

I think this version of the story is much better, as someone who can appreciate "The beauty in the sorrow", this idea that the protagonist saves herself against all odds. Well, that is inspirational for all the right reasons and makes her a far better character.
As far as the torture she went through, there are people who live with disabilities and pain every day. Those same people often are some of the strongest individuals you will ever meet.

  • @sociallyawekward4978

I think it’s kind of interesting that the prince couldn’t see her as someone he could marry. Most of the time in these stories a guy sees a pretty girl and “falls in love with her” because she’s just so darn beautiful. But this time as pretty as the little mermaid is, it does matter that they can’t carry a intellectual conversation. It’s kind of encouraging for women in particular by showing that one of the worse things you can do is to give up your “voice” and that doing so can only bring pain and sorrow.

When I was a kid, the Little Mermaid spoke to my soul. I wanted to be Ariel in the sense of always being in charge of making my own choices. Looking back I have done exactly that with my life.
However, after I had my son, the movie Ponyo came out and when he got old enough to watch both, my feelings toward Ariel as THE little mermaid changed. I found myself in love with another version of Han's story. One of which, I could share with my own child. He couldn't connect to the Disney version but the Miyazaki film brought him the same joy the Little Mermaid did for me when I was his age.
Even though he's a teenager now, Ponyo still remains as one of his favorite movies. Thanks Hans Christian Anderson!

  • @yananesmeyana

I've actually read a version of Andersen's tale in which the Mermaid just dissolves in the water, and that's it. Never heard of the transforming into the air creature part. And I feel like this somewhat happy ending takes something from the story, kinda like when Marvel characters die just to be ressurected in another movie. Maybe I'm fucked up as a person, but I love this tragic story. But I cried my eyes out as a child when I've read the tale, so I understand why Andersen desided to add that part.

The story my grandma read to me was the first draft. The sea-foam ending was that tragic romance, where whenever the prince walked the shores, she would rest upon his feet for a mere moment of bliss. I remember the illustrations having a 50s or 50s style of illustration, looking like brushed ink in green monochrome in all the stories of the books.
Also, the whole love arc between Ariel, the prince, and the women she married reminds me of that intensity of love we felt as teens.

I don’t think the issue is so much the prince not loving the mermaid, but rather how he’s condescending towards her by having her sleep on a velvet cushion outside his door and calling her his “little foundling” and a “dumb child”.
Just because you’re not attracted to someone doesn’t mean you can treat that person like crap.
It doesn’t help that the prince plays with the mermaid’s emotions by saying he would marry her only to then dump her for someone who looked like his savior (despite his savior standing next to him!).

My dude, I’ve been struggling with emotional trauma (got dumped and trying to revisit the breaking free from codependency thing is the TLDR) and I really enjoy the interpretation/analysis about the ending. Honestly, just before discussing the children of the air bit, I was bitterly mumbling, “yeah well the poor girl fell in love, chose selflessness as a result of not putting herself first, and ceased to exist in a sea of bubbles and it’s just how it goes when you effing love and care for someone for years who doesn’t want you”.
I completely forgot about the children of the air thing. But I’m also really glad you made this revisit video because it’s reminding us that being human isn’t a black and white adventure: there’s a lot of directions life can take us as a result of us just being us. If we did all that we could with the right themes in mind, then the only thing left is really to move forward. So as much as I’ve enjoyed the many other videos, I have to say, I particularly enjoy this one. It’s like a not therapy therapy. Kudos, friend 👌👌
