    In this video we take to the skies in the DC Designs AV-8B Harrier II, within Microsoft Flight Simulator (MSFS). We'll start on the deck of India Foxt Echo's LHA06, the USS America; as usual we'll carry out a full startup and in today's flight, we'll be putting the Harrier through its VTOL paces, with a flight up and back to the Sakhir Air Base.
    The DC Designs AV-8B is marketed as "accessible to all users" and focuses more on the fun factor, than aiming at being a full-fidelity module. As such, we will be reviewing it accordingly.
    The version of the aircraft we will be looking at in this video is still a pre-release version and as such, may not fully represent the final version of the aircraft.
    Please note this video and all its contents / materials, is for entertainment / simulation purposes only.

      Ah well hopefully the wait won't be too much longer now Kingsman. The product seems to have been held up a little, but I presume that is as a result of SU11. The sounds are indeed very nice, great to hear that classic Harrier "whine" in the sim : )

    You already know how much store I put in your reviews, but nevertheless very pleased to hear that you’ve given this a thumbs up. Instant purchase for me, even more so given the quite decent quality on display here.
    Your vid also reminds me I’ve not flown Concorde in months. Will have to, er, get it out of the hanger…

      Well I'd certainly give it a thumbs up Mark, within the bounds of a DC Designs / MSFS product. Worth reiterating that the addon doesn't give the DCS Harrier a run for its money by any means, but if you're happy enough with the DC Designs Concorde, then I'm sure you'll have some good fun with this one (I certainly did)!
      By all means, please drop by the Discord - I'm trying to show my face there a little more also. Like you though, free time is a tricky thing to find haha.

    Once again! We see another wonderful, professional preview of an aircraft that i have been waiting patiently for! I am now going to be skint for this week after my purchase even given the somewhat inoperative and less functional state ot the aircraft at it's state at the moment, I will still be purchasing this one! Thank You ITB! For another very well done Early Access production here. NB: I also use the Harrier AV8B from FSX, and the DCS one also, (yes it is never any comparison). From a liker, subscriber and avid ITB watcher!
    @15:56 I'd LOVE to see more effects from ASOBO as in water sprays from jets on runways, when wet, or snow etc.. One can only hope right? :P
    Incidentally @ 18:50 I do not believe the Harrier AV8B Horizontal tailplane
    has any independant movement? I saw them move independantly here, and i do believe they should only be for pitch, and not roll together?
    would LOVE an in depth review of the Miltech MV22B Osprey if and when you have that chance ;)

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks very much once again RH, I'm really glad you enjoyed it! I guess at least your wallet got a little reprieve, with the AV-8B seemingly being somewhat delayed haha (presumably as a result of SU11).
      Good spot there on the elevator movement! I noticed it at the time and thought something looked "off", but couldn't quite put my finger on it haha. I believe you're correct (at the least the DCS Harrier would suggest so).
      I was rather looking forward to taking a look at the Osprey and was actually contacted by Miltech, but they went cold on me for some reason and the video somewhat fell by the wayside. I may still take a look at some point, but I have some other irons in the fire to take care of first ; )
      Thank you very much for the kind words once again Robin, it really is hugely appreciated! All the best : )

    Great review as is now the norm with you Sir, As this isnt released yet I was too tempted by the MV-22B Osprey from Miltech and wow how well the devs have done with that so far sounds and animations are just outstanding and I expect to see a WIP review from you shortly lol But his when it releases will be added to my library of Aircraft being local to RNAS Yeovilton its ashame that the FAA FA2 Sea Harrier wasnt included with this so the GR9 will have to be taking its place whilst on lone to the FAA thanks to RAF Cottesmore. I hear good things about the Osprey. I may still take a look at the aircraft, but I have a few other projects to keep me busy for the moment ; )

      Thanks very much DickieP - very kind of you to say and I'm really glad you enjoyed the video!
      If you have the DCS Harrier, you may find that the DC Designs version doesn't stack up all that favourably. If you want something to have fun with in MSFS, then the addon certainly ticks the box, but otherwise the DCS version is better in just about every respect (that's not to knock the DC Designs AV-8B, the products just do different things).

      @@IntotheBlueSimulations I thought it might be the case and thankyou. As much as I love msfs and have done so for years, it just doesn’t quite match the feel of dcs. Out of curiosity do you have a jetseat and or buttkicker on your setup? Genuinely enjoy your videos and the presentation style

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Completely agree! DCS is (by and large) *the* sim for accurate flight physics etc. I throughly enjoy DCS, but I can barely find the time to enjoy one sim these days haha.
      I do indeed have a “Buttkicker” (it’s actually a different brand, but same principle); it’s excellent for ramping up the immersion that little bit more, especially in VR! DCS was the primary reason I got the transducer (Buttkicker) actually. It’s great to feel the thud of the afterburner, vibration from the guns etc. As a device, I think transducers are great; I wouldn’t recommend a Buttkicker specifically though, as I owned one previously to my current unit and it broke pretty quickly (this seems to be a common occurrence).

    This is going to be fun aircraft! It’s not like the one on DCS where that is a lot more advanced being that it’s a real military sim type. They should add the blowing affect when the aircraft is hovering. Other than that, it looks super good so far and it will be one of the best ones out there that people will absolutely enjoy flying!

      The addon certainly is a lot of fun Maroon5! As you say, obviously this version isn't up to the same standards as the DCS AV-8B, but then neither does it try to be. Looks interesting overall, but that kind of super low poly modeling at 4:37 just isn't up to the standards that should be delivered in MSFS. Some of the external textures also look very much like a first draft of handpainted texturing that's missing all the refinement to make it look real. Like the rivets at 3:37. The visuals are very important to me and this could be an outstanding aircraft if a little more care would be put into the modeling and texturing. An MSFS aircraft needs to look like an actual aircraft and not like a wonkily glued together plastic model kit. 😉

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Jigsaw,
      Yes, visual modelling certainly isn't the AV8B's biggest strength. I can very much understand where you're coming from and indeed, you're not alone in your opinion. The good news is, DC Designs does seem to be aware of the feedback and has now taken on an external visual artist apparently - so hopefully we'll see improvements as a result. I gather the Phantom will be done to these new visual standards (so that should give us a feel as to what they're like) and the previous DC Designs product's will be updated to a similar visual quality thereafter.
      I can very much see where DC Designs is coming from with the flight modelling / systems fidelity, but I know we'd all like to see a sharper visual representation of these aircraft.

      The nozzles are bound to the prop pitch axis, which was handy for me, since I already have a hardware axis assigned to the function. The only thing that was a little odd; the “fully coarse” position equated to 0 degrees nozzle angle and vice versa (that felt “backwards” to me).

    The biggest downside for the devs of this module is that it's forever going to be compared to the one in DCS. That more or less holds true for any of the aircraft modeled in DCS that find their way into other flight sims.
    Given how we seem to be entering into a new golden age for flight sims in general, DCS has been serving as something of a golden standard for military aircraft in all other flight sims. That's generally great for us, as it somewhat incentivizes that higher level of quality, systems depth, functionality, and modeling. It's amazing how far everything has come over even just the past 10 years.

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's very true I think Kenny, it's certainly hard not to compare, but I try to bear in mind that firstly, there will be a whole load of MSFS users, who have perhaps never even heard of DCS and secondly, there are certainly many simmers, not looking for that level of complexity (I don't fall into that category myself mind you). DCS is indeed the gold standard, for what the overall quality of what a payware module should be and I certainly hope we will start to see modules of a similar quality coming into MSFS (I think we already are and of course this process takes time).
      As you say, it's amazing to see how far everything has come and it's great to be living through another golden age of flight simulation!

      I purchased the addon through Orbx, but I suspect you might be able to find it on Simmarket also (and perhaps even through the in-sim Marketplace). The carriers are rendered very nicely, but just be warned, they aren’t actually selectable as airports (a very strange choice from India Foxt Echo), so you’ll have to cold start somewhere else and then fly over (you also can’t use the slew function either, or the aircraft will fall through the deck). There are some free carriers available on Flightsim.to, perhaps worth taking a look at those also (though they aren’t modelled quite as nicely).

      Yes, I would say that the addon is reasonably fairly priced, though at the upper limits, given that we are now seeing study level jets etc for not a whole lot more money. The Harrier is great fun though and DC Designs have said that the AV-8B (along with the rest of their products), will be visually updated in due course. . .
      If you did pick the addon up, I hope you're enjoying it! Happy flying and all the best : )

      @TickleFight94 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m sure you can find someone willing to make this livery for PC. If on Xbox you would need to get in touch with DC designs through their social media to see if they would include it in an update. CJ just did it for the Eurofighter so it probably just depends on relationship with the artist.

      Exactly as TickleFight suggests Shiv, I'm sure someone over on Flightsim.to would have a crack at the livery for you (if they haven't done so already). I seem to recall that you're on PC?
      Haha, I've always tended to support a driver, rather than a team. I was a big Coulthard / McLaren fan back in the day, then it kind of went Schumacher, Vettel, Hamilton, Max (I've just realised, I've tended to support the current champion haha). I still really like Seb, but Hamilton started to annoy me when he became all trendy and political. I'd like to see Russell and Albon do well also. If I had to pick any team I have a soft spot for these days, probably Williams, though they are a shadow of their former selves; I guess it would be nice to see Ferrari win a championship again also. Yourself? : )
      Cheers!

      Hello Cairl,
      I'm afraid I don't actually own the release version of the AV-8B (though I will probably be picking it up at some point): I was only given a preview version of the product and as such I can't use it for any further videos. I do recall finding that the autopilot needed some work (it engages, but doesn't hold alt etc?), but I had expected / hoped that it would have been fixed up by release. Definitely worth getting touch with Just Flight / DC Designs, if that issue is still present.
      Sorry I can't be of more help on that one. All the best!

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi dhop,
      I believe in reality, the Harrier actually uses a nozzle angle of around 82 degrees in the hover - so the flight model behaviour sounds about right there (try adjusting your nozzle angle slightly forward and you should be good). As for not being able to get the AV-8B into the hover, what sort of weight are you at? The Harrier can't takeoff / land vertically at high weights, you need to be below 21,000lbs (if memory serves me correctly) and closer to 19,000-20,000lbs ideally. Make sure to keep your fuel / load down for the takeoff and if you find yourself too heavy arriving into an airport, you can always dump fuel to get your weight down.
      I hope that helps? All the best : )

    I deleted my last comment and I'm rewriting it with updated thoughts. I appreciate your reviews and previews and I always enjoy your content even when I'm not a fan of the particular item you are reviewing. I'm a big fan of the Harrier and would love to own one in MSFS but I've not been impressed with the visuals of DC Designs products over the past 2 years. I enjoy the flight models but the interiors particularly are lacking in my opinion. I noticed after downloading the brand new updates for the F14 and F15 that there is a huge improvement in this regard. I have to give credit where credit is due. Would you be able to advise if the Harrier has these improved visuals or if it still needs work? If the newer planes are getting this type of better visual presentation I may be willing to take a chance again. Thanks.

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello John,
      Thanks very much for the kind words regarding my videos, I’m glad you’re enjoying the content! I try to give each addon a fair shake and demonstrate the product in its entirety (the good and the bad), such that people can then form their own opinions.
      There’s no doubt that DC Designs has been behind the curve on the visuals in MSFS (some people tend to conflate that with overall quality, which I’ve always felt was a bit unfair, as I generally think the flight models, sounds and additional features are on a par with the competition in the same price bracket - like you, I rather enjoy the DC Designs flight models overall). DC Designs has always stated that the visuals of each product will be updated in due course; this has taken them rather a long time in fairness, but it’s great to hear that those updates are starting to make their way over to the F-14 etc. I gather that a 3rd party graphical artist was actually taken on by DC Designs, to bring the products up to a more acceptable modern standard. I don’t believe the Harrier has received any such updates as of yet, but it’s worth keeping an eye on. From what I have read, the F-4 will be the first addon released to the new graphical standard, so it will be very interesting to see what we come across there (not least of all because the Phantom is one of my personal favourite aircraft!).
      I hope that clarifies things a bit. I’m a big Harrier fan also, so I’ll probably make another video, as and when the aircraft receives a graphical upgrade.
      Cheers and all the best : )

      Hi NG,
      I believe in the case of the Harrier, water is used to help keep engine temperatures down (namely the JPT). This allows the engine to be run at higher RPM and hence produce more thrust, but only for a limited amount of time (until the water runs out).

    DC Design products always look disappointing... They done many iconic war planes (Tomcat, Eagle, Viper and now Harrier) but all look like "it'll be fine..." products. 3D is often quite wrong, systems are simplistic and they always lack the "spark" that gives the impression that much love was pushed in the product.
    Very far behind JustFlight, FlyingIron or MilViz products.

    • @justflight
      @justflight ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think worth pointing out that DC Designs products aren't aimed at entirely the same target market as the planes developed and published by the companies that you mention there. This has been covered many times but they are designed to offer a great simming experience to more casual users, there is depth there and for this aircraft you'll need to be well tuned in and to know what you are doing to ensure you fly it correctly. The coverage so far for the aircraft backs this up, all the users have only positive things to say about the plane. Yes there are some shortcomings but as with all DC Designs products they will be worked on and improved over time. Your opinion based on what you have seen and that's fine but do bear in mind there are thousands out there now enjoying every minute of flying these iconic war planes. Hope that helps somewhat.

  • @kzrlgo

    Thanks for the review but the modeling is very very poor, especially the interior (even outside the dimensions are off). DCS AV8B is about 35euro and is literally 10x more detailed in every way. How is this product justified above maybe 5-10 euro? MSFS is going full casual/xbox and if it wasn't for the map/terrain detail allowing for bush flights there would be no reason to use MSFS2020... even as I am finishing this I looked up at the cockpit again and literally let out an out loud laugh.
    A thumbs up? With all you said? I guess standards have changed around here. I very much doubt fans will be happy with it. Then again, you called it a "fighter jet", so opinion taken with salt.
    Edit: and then we see the pilot model with the weird broken arm xD I'm dying! DC Designs eh, another half hearted turd for sale rather than spending time on a decent model.

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Kaiser,
      Some of your points are certainly fair, others I would respectfully disagree with. For any review, I aim to showcase the product as best I can and let others draw their own conclusions thereafter. I also look to judge a product based on its target demographic. Clearly you felt you saw enough to make your own decisions.
      Undoubtedly the DCS AV-8B is vastly superior, I said as much in the video. Those who want a “study level” Harrier experience, are obviously better off heading over to DCS but again, not everyone wants that and whilst a lower fidelity addon may not be your cup of tea (nor mine ordinarily), it is exactly what many MSFS users are after and for better or worse, this is the audience that DC Designs caters to.
      Indeed, I would give the product a “thumbs up”, if one is looking for a mid-range Harrier experience within MSFS and can live with the caveats that I mentioned during the review. I haven’t changed my standards; I enjoyed my time out in the jump jet and any opinions I give, are always going to be agreeable with some and not with others. Graphically, the aircraft could certainly be better and the product is rather pricey when compared with the competition, but people can / do decide for themselves what represents good value, they don’t need me telling them.
      In short, I think your points regarding the product are valid, but it’s a DC Designs product, it was never going to deliver a RAZBAM AV-8B experience within MSFS (not least of all because DC Designs weren’t trying to). I disagree that MSFS has gone “full casual”, the likes of the PMDG 737, Fenix A320, Leonardo Maddog etc would prove otherwise, but clearly DCS is still a vastly superior platform for military aviation.
      One final point, that I would be remiss if I didn’t mention: Seemingly deriding my calling the aircraft a “fighter jet”, is a little bit unfair / unnecessary. I’ve made countless videos / reviews at this point and don’t come from a military background; nobody is going to get everything spot on 100% of the time, but I hardly think my use of the wrong noun, subsequently invalidates the rest of my opinions (clearly I took the time to learn and review the aircraft in a reasonably representative fashion). . .
      I hope the above is fair and that I’ve perhaps clarified a few points also. All the best : )
