As a fellow sportster owner, I approve of this Lol. In my opinion the 883 is the most iconic looking Harley there is.

Cannot go wrong with a EVO Sportster, Being a mechanic I think they are the best Harley engine ever made period and I have owned everything from a panhead on. If you like a true Harley sound and feel buy one it is all you will ever need.

The Sportster best Harley out there. I loved my old used 2006 1200. Fist year of ownership rode 8000 plus miles out west and out south east. Awesome bike on the Trail of the Dragon 🐉.

I bought my 1985 Honda V65 Sabre brand new as a "leftover" in 1987. It had 7 miles on it when I rode it home. Now, it's closing in on 100K miles and it's getting a little tired. It still looks like brand new but, it's at a good shop now for an overhaul. The funny thing is that when I rode it into the shop, the tech who will be doing the work and the shop owner were waiting for me. The tech looked at me, then the owner and said "finally, a REAL bike to work on!" and the owner answered with one word..."yep".

In my opinion, they were the best Harley's > myself and buds had several variations when we were just out of high school. But growing up 6'2 215lbs I got too big for them. Really liked the high bars, metal flake '72 editions. And nothing is beating a 1200 Sporty off the line....they will pass them 300ft later but being that light with that amount of torque, hole shots were a blast.

You got that right. I bought a 92 1200 brand new and back then riding with a buddy that had his Road King engine just rebuilt by Carl's Speed shop after he moved to Daytona back in the 1990's. He spent maybe 5 grand on the engine. Anyway, he wanted to race. My 1200 was stock except for Screaming Eagle mufflers and un known to him, I had one of the first single fire MC Power Arc ignitions on the bike that I set the rev limiter to about 8K. I came off the line a bit slow but then hit 2nd gear and did not shift until you could hear the valves making that weird noise when they are "floating" due to hi rev condition. I ran so far away from him that he was really ticked that he spent all that money and was beat by a stock (almost) 1200 Sporty. Mine was that Teal and Off white 2 tone, I sold it in mid 2000's.......... but goes to show what you said about the 1200 having the best power to weight ratio of the HD's at least back then.

I bought a Sportster XL1200 Custom new....ordered it in myself in fact. Still have it, although I mostly ride dual-sport (BMW F800GS) as the asphalt is a little crazy these days. I've noticed a real change in driver behaviour and aggressiveness during and after the pandemic. My Sportster is also pristine....I'm not getting rid of it because there's no way the market would give me what it is worth to me.

I put a non running 89 mitsubishi mighty max on marketplace for 900 bucks and ended up with a running 94 1200 sportster. Had to put tires, rebuild forks, headlight that worked etc... It's cosmetically in rough shape, so I've just been putting parts from whatever on it to make it run down the road. It's a fun bike, and boy does it scoot off the line.

I've been riding my 06 1200c for 15 years now. Took me a summer of riding to get used to those forward controls. Had to put taller handle bars on after I shattered my left elbow and lost my reach. My last Sportster was a 1981. Both are awesome. You'll need that return cable when it's hot outside. Otherwise it'll idle hi and low and never set at a constant idle. VOE

There are NO accidents Tony, you know that as well as I do!
Several years ago, my daughter and I were visiting a friend of mine and he had a ratty 1970 Triumph Bonneville Roadster (T-120R) sitting in a corner of his garage. She got bored listening to us but saw that Bonnie in the corner and was intrigued. Long story short, that Bonnie became her Christmas present that year and, we've been working on making her beautiful again ever since. That purchase was no accident lol!
In my mind, if there's ONE thing that Sporty needs before I'd ride it, that one thing would be a mirror on the left side!

The Sportster is likely the best motor Harley ever made. If it's an Evo motor, all the better. I had a AMF Sportster and found nothing at all wrong with the bike. Never leaked, even though every time I went to the Harley dealer there were puddles of fresh oil under the big motors all the time. I remember test riding a big motor bike. I remember it feeling slow to me, not like a real Harley at all. It was a noise maker though. Mine was the last of the kick start only. I remember it being real enough for me. I wish I still had it.

That's funny, about a year ago, my son in law told me there was a great sportster for sale side of the road on his way to work. I go check it out and it's a 2005 883 Sportster, in beautiful shape for 2200 bucks. I took a look at it and put a check in the man's hands for the price. I rode it home, some thirty miles, and it's sitting in my garage. I paid more for my 74 sportster I bought back in 76, and it was rough, had some problems. The world is gone crazy lately!

I have a 1998 Sportster that I bought 4 years ago for $2800. I bought it at the time when my Ultra was undergoing some significant work and I needed something to ride in the meantime. It ran fine and all I did was an oil change and front rotor and pads. The following years I put new tires on it. Now I no longer really need this bike, but I can't seem to put it up for sale. It runs too well and had never given me a problem. When I decide not to ride my Ultra and ride the Sportster instead, I call it "walking the dog". And when I do, I am reminded of what a great bike it is. It started life as an 883 Hugger, but when I bought it the bike had the same Mustang seat yours has. It was also converted to 1200 and having ridden other 883s I know for sure it's a 1200. Best $2800 I ever spent!

I bought a XL1200C. I bought it a a consignment dealer. It has 24,000 miles on it. I have the screaming eagle exhaust. I put a mustang wide touring seat with a backrest. It is silver. It runs great and is a blast to ride. The only problems I have are the tires are old and need replaced. They are Avon tires. I can't get usedto Avon brand tires. I know it is an english brand. Also the turn signals work but not the indicator for the left turn signal. Also the high beam indicator light comeson when riding when the high beam is not on.
It also has a custom cast front wheel.

The K model immediately preceeded the Sporty. It was never called a Sportster, but certainly spawned it. The K model was a flathead, the Sporty an OHV.

HD must have had a engineer shortage at that time, they were trying to replace the dated WL 750 models with something that could compete against the British bikes. The side valve K models were sent to the front lines because they didn't have an OHV bike which would be several years out in the form of the Sportster.

I also don't know why people put so much of that Harley "Ride to Live - Live to Ride" crap on them. A lot of Sportster owners think it looks cool, I guess. But Sportsters are great - I've had *four* of them, and #3 and #4 are in the garage right now - running! So have fun with that one, Tony. Keep us updated on what you do with it.

Well Tony, I have not yet accidentally bought a motorbike on Fb Marketplace, or Ebay for that matter, but I have managed to accidentally buy (crazy low max bids that I set and forget until the "ding, you just won XYZ") a few car's, a tractor, a trailer and I'm sure other stuff I've forgotten about on Ebay over the years. I must make it a mission to keep a look out for a cheap motorbike! I've been hankering for a early 80's Yamaha Xs 250, the first road bike that I rode as a teenager. Yes I know, it's old and it's slow, but I'm getting older too. Now I'm in my 40s, I wouldn't mind adding one to my collection of toys with Motors, and riding it occasionally. Thanks Tony!

Nice bike. The shut off cable is important should the throttle get stuck for whatever reason. I am more into the sport bikes but same idea.

I actually like the push pull throttle cables. The meat heads can't adjust them properly.

the push pull throttle is a safety feature to prevent your throttle from getting stuck open. its there for a reason

Love the channel, it’s a great mix! I’ve never owned a Porker, but now at age 70, I believe I’d enjoy a pre-rubber mount Sport. More like your R model though. Keep up the good fight re: the dangerous L-I powered EVs.

You are killing me Tony, I don't even like Mopars yet I watch your channel (although I do have a '95 12 Valve 2500, and a '96 Cherokee) AND I am getting back into bikes.. so far I've gotten a 450 dirt bike and a trials bike, been thinking about getting a street bike.. I've had 3 Harley's in the past and now, I'm looking at (another) Sportster... lol
