I LOVED this documentary when I was a kid. I remember when I was homeschooled for my final years of middle school back in 2001-2002 I was obsessed with anime, and my mom challenged me to research aspects of Japanese culture beyond just anime. And in the process I read and learned all about this wonderful traditional religion, and rented this tape from the local university too many times to count.
That's amazing you saw this as a young person before Japanese culture was really super popular.... And way before TH-cam

I am amazed by the Japanese way of life, deeply related to Shintoism. More amazingly is most Japanese do not consider themselves having a religion. It has become a part of their natural existence. I find it admirable that they have so much respect for everything. So I came looking for Shintoism. I see other religions are fighting each other in name of God, those came even from the same source. Where Shinto can really teach by example of a whole country of Japan how it can give so much reverence to life itself.
This is typical of "traditional religion," there is no fundamental distinction between "religion," culture, ethnicity, and the state. No Roman would claim to be a "believer," in "Roman religion, " he simply was Roman because of all the above factors.
It wasn't until Abrahamic religion that religion became religion.
Sadly, the bureaucrats of the WW2 used a corrupted version of Shinto to boost nationalistic feelings among the Japanese people.

FDR provoked Japan into WWII by freezing their assets in the USA and blocking import of oil and metal into Japan while they were at war with China. This was well before Pearl Harbour.

Very interesting to see how adaptable Shinto religion was with Buddhism, my common perception of religion until now was of inflexibility towards alien philosophies.
You're probably used to monotheism. Monotheism is inherently divisive, creating false gods and demons in other religions. Polytheism rarely has that issue.
The narrator is wrong to say that Shinto and Buddhism have "never" been in opposition; in the 1860s there was a vicious campaign to purge Shinto of corruption from foreign Buddhist influences. Buddhist Temples and Shinto Shrines were forced to become legally separate institutions, with Kami and Bodhisattvas declared to be different entities.
@@TheShadowOfMars I was going to say the same thing. When Buddhism was initially introduced into Japan the Japanese simply saw the bodhisattva as different forms of the Kami. Japanese religion as a whole is a mixture of Shinto, Buddhism, indigenous beliefs, Taoism and Confucianism, all mixing together into one.
After the Edo period there was a severe lack of trust and hatred towards the former Shoganate. Buddhism was very closely related to the shogon government, and there was a push for the reclamation of "original" Japanese things. Even though Buddhism in Japan is not much older than institutionalized Shinto, the post edo-ite saw it as a foreign poison and not true Japanese. They destroyed many Buddhist temples and art.
The answer might lie in the fact that 'religion' is not a word Japanese culture knows. Spiritual life is not depending on form but content. Western religious life clings to form and its relation with culture, politics and the like. therefor we view japanese spiritual life within a political or cultural situation. That is typicial western 'thinking'. Japanese spiritual life actually depends the primal relation of man to the spiritual world itself. I think that is the reason those buildings are renewed once in a 20 years. The 'new' buildings are not 'new', but they are just a continuation of the intention of a spiritual idea. It all derives from the meaning of the word 'MA', which indicates a 'space', that serves as a mediator between the profane and sacred/death-world. etc etc..
The thing is japanese religion as a whole is natively japanese. Shinto and ainu religions as well as ryuyukuan religion although there is distinction in both geography. But then again this is redefining japan and identity. The thing is indigenous japan tradition as a whole is non buddhist in perception not wholly but since buddhism is orthodox therefore needs discrimination and classificiation. There is shinto and folk shinto and other religions native to japan that is distincly and natively aand wholly Japan. Now we can discuss what japan and nihon means and look deep in what it is and what it means to buddhist and shinto religionists as well as other religons in japan

I am grateful that Thanksgiving gives us the opportunity to be grateful for life as it is.
When I stop obsessing over the past, its good.
When I think of the Earth now, as an environmentalist, and all the green space that exists right now, I am thankful, when we look down on the planet from above in a plane, most of it that is not ocean is green and thats amazing.
When I let go of the idea of native americans, (as much as I sincerely respect them, I do not think many of their ways are appropriate for the entire world, and this is why they are mostly secretive.) And think of just people as a whole, the earth as a whole, even the universe & multiverse as a whole I can begin to understand.
Its not about an old wound, its about life now, people have peace all we have to do is make the most of it, and help encourage one another to be strong in what helps everyone, things like recycling as often as possible, and dispelling the nightmares from our heads when they occur, to prevent the 'crustifying' of the third eye, and remember the creative power of our own dreams & inner spontaneous magic (not a power that can be used over others to force them to be one way or another in matters that don't effect the whole, if its just a person throwing trash everywhere or trying to yolk others against their will for exclusive benefit we can rightfully intervene for them to stop.)
I am thankful that I sacrifice classical perfectionism for simply covering most of the essentials. The end result of my actions is mostly good & the goal (preserving the heavenly beauty & health of the planet) is accomplished; because of this I am happy regardless of small notes that may or may not have been missed.

Sounds like you're listening to non western music for the first time. Those "reees" are gagaku, traditional japanese orchestral music. Theres a video up here explaining all of the instruments

It's hard to find anything about it. Since the US completely occupied their land and had it fade away through the means of repression. It's a beautiful religion that delves into energy as a medium for all intelligence. Ancient history with an amalgamation of anecdotes from the people throughout history. They know higher consciousnesses do not die when the brain stops functioning. We are in a field of energy and they know we and our ancestors are here. It's an amazing concept.

We stayed for less than 10 years on the island, and we certainly didnt try and wipe out shinto as a religion. Hell, we even let them keep their emperor on the throne!
Maybe we should ask the Chinese, Malaysians or the Phillipines how the Japanese treated them during WW2.

So this is my testimony about getting back into the church after 10 years of being out of it. For awhile I was an atheist and then an agnostic, however, God delivered me out of a difficult and strange period of my life that left me without doubt of His existence and goodness.
It's a bit of a long read, so bear with me.
A couple weeks into February of 2018 I experienced some dreams of a strange nature during a time where I was isolated, depressed, and desperate. I've dealt with anxiety and depression for along time and I was at the end of my rope. I had considered seriously commiting suicide two years ago and when the depression hit this time I couldn't take it anymore. I was searching desperately for something that would allow me to leave the situation I was in.
I was addicted to gaming and was very isolated. I also fell heavily into a series of books I was re-reading at the time that I had a great obsession with, The Dark Tower series by Stephen King.
A few months into a reread of this series I had a dreams in February 2018 one of which I think was prophetic, having to do with seeing a woman and man in the dream that I later saw the next day while walking and while watching TV. This was a man and woman that I hadn't met or seen before.There were also aspects of the dreams (which I can't easily get into because it's difficult to explain due to the content) that led me to believe that The Dark Tower series having to do with parallel universes was real.
I became convinced that there was a world parallel to ours, like the books, that I could gain access to if I used certain objects that I had in my possession . After weird events also began occuring in my home, with my television, and with me, I told my parents about all of it.
They were adamant that what I was experiencing was demonic deception and that I should cease reading these books and give myself over to God.
Being stubborn and delusional I decided to continue in what I thought was a great discovery and a way out of my situation.
Events transpired over the next few days that left me in a state of confusion and despair. My father also ended up in the hospital that week. It wasn't until I began to cry out to Jesus that things began to change. I began to hear from God during this time. I felt like I should rid myself of the books as well as the stuff I had gathered connected to them.
I eventually ended up getting rid of all the books and objects connected to them, as well as a lot of other stuff including my games. We were doing some work in my room at the time so luckily I had something to help keep my mind off what had been happening as well as grow in the word from listening to 107.9 on my radio
When we finally returned to church a couple weeks later the sermon and series was about the book of Daniel, some of which has to do with prophetic dreams and visions among other things. I know now that this wasn't a coincidence.
Once I started getting involved in the church again and reading the Bible I found out that these things really aren't as uncommon or unbelievable as they seem. My mens bible study at the time had members that had experienced supernatural and amazing things as well.
I know this isn't going to sound credible if you aren't a Christian. Back when I didn't believe, these stories didn't seem compelling or true to me. However I can tell you that if you reach out to God wholeheartedly he will reveal himself to you.
I'd like to ask that if you're going through something right now, some kind of challenge or difficulty that you reach out to God and ask him to help you. Sometimes it may not seem like anything is happening, but if you're willing to hold on and push through you can see him move in your situation in miraculous ways.
