I live in the Reno area and I've driven and walked around there many times. There is a similar deposit about 2 hours east of Reno, it's actually bigger and better. When you come back to the area, I can take you there or try and show you on a map. It's on a really rough road in the middle of nowhere.
Thank you so much. Would love to go visit. Also want to do an episode through the pass between Sparks and Fernley. So many cool geological places to visit around the greater Reno area.
Diatomaceous earth (powdered diatomite) is used for filtering (swimming pool filters, filtering beer, etc) to absorb spilled oil in garages, lots of things.
These days, most (clumping) cat litter is made from bentonite. Diatomaceous earth is too dusty and hard on the lungs. I was expecting you to show us a clay layer! 😅 Thanks for giving us the location, I don’t think I’ve ever seen diatomaceous earth in situ.
Hey Garrett. Where are you from or based? This video popped up in my feed. This is a trail I’ve been on before because my folks live nearby. Strangely, I see that you have several videos from the Houston area, where I’ve also lived. Thanks for the information about our local geology. I hope you post more about the Reno area! Would love a video about the geology in the Virginia City Foothills along Geiger Grade. I’ve always wondered.
You are welcome. I live in the greater Houston area and spend a lot of time in Nevada (one of my favorite places). I am glad you enjoyed the video. Next time I am in the Reno area I will do an episode for you on the Geiger grade. Really cool geologic story there. Thanks for the idea.
Great question. It started with the Sevier and Laramie progenies which thickened the crust. The thickened crust then relaxed and magma started upwelling leading to a series of large (super volcanoes) which kicked off extension in the region. With the onset of the San Andreas, extension continues and the region is continuing to be modified. This was a very simplified version. I hope you do some more research on your own and thanks again for the question. They are appreciated.
Thank you so much. I appreciate the kind words. I was wondering how big the pit mines could get. I am a geologist and love seeing the rocks and understanding the importance of mining but the big open pit mines do make me sad.
Our sweet little friends are beneficiary to some great geological events of the past.
That's a great way to put it! Thanks for the comment.
Thanks for the geology lesson. Keep up the good work!
Thanks. I appreciate you all! Someday maybe I will need to teach more formally!
Thank you, Garrett. Very interesting. I'm familiar with the area and Truckee River. I lived in Nevada City, CA for 9 years. I miss the mountains.
I love it out there also. I am glad you enjoyed and hope all is well.
Neat. Great video.
Thank you! I am glad you enjoyed it.
Kitty litter who knew now we do thank you
Thank you. I thought it was a fascinating place to visit.

Thanks for the additional uses for diatomite! Appreciate the comment and the sharing.

Thanks for the additional info. Appreciate it. If you ever make it to the Reno are this outcrop is off of 4th just west of Macarran.

What is the cause of basin/range extension?

Years ago I drove past an open pit cat litter mine in Wyoming. I love my cats, but the environmental effect that goes unseen by most is depressing.
I just wanted to let you know I appreciate your work, I'm a first time viewer and your newest subscriber.
