  • In recent weeks we’ve seen a number of acid attack incidents make headlines, including the mother and two children who were injured in Clapham allegedly by Abdul Ezedi. Thankfully these types of attacks are rare, but they’re on the rise - up 69% across England and Wales last year. So what should you do if you or someone you’re with has suspected chemical burns? How should you treat a child who has accessed cleaning products at home? Dr Nighat’s here with her advice.

In 2023 an estimated 6.3 million children under five died, 2.9 million of them in the WHO African Region. This is equivalent to five children under 5 years of age dying every minute. Two thirds of these deaths can be attributed to preventable causes. A third of all these deaths are in the neonatal period.

If we can't use cold water for chemical burns, maybe bottled water from shops wouldn't be good since they're from a fridge?

Warm water is better, but any water will help if that's all you got e.g. bottled water
