  • Coastal Command is a 1942 film originally made by the Crown Film Unit for the Ministry of Information. Two versions of the film are known to exist -- the original British version and this one, which was released by the War Department in the United States. The U.S. version is more or less the same movie, only slightly shorter. It was also originally released in the USA with War Department identification numbers.
This fascinating movie, distributed by RKO, dramatised the work of RAF Coastal Command. It was made under the supervision of Ian Dalrymple, with the full cooperation of the Royal Air Force and the Royal Navy. The participants of the movie were active RAF officers, NCOs and aircrew, and RN officers, and included pilot Roger Hunter and Flight Sergeant Charles Norman Lewis; the latter of whom was killed in World War II. The performances were generally well received.[citation needed] Coastal Command is notable for its score by Ralph Vaughan Williams. Coastal Command is a documentary-style account of the Shorts Sunderland and PBY Catalina flying boats during the Battle of the Atlantic.
The film includes real footage of attacks on a major enemy ship by Hudson and Halifax bombers based in Iceland. Later, the film depicts a routine sea patrol, in which a Sunderland flying boat flies over a convoy and bombs a German U-boat. Two versions of the film were made, one featuring an explanatory voice-over. In this version, the film ends with a combined air attack on an enemy cruiser caught away from its base. The Sunderland's crew returns to England, mission accomplished, and with a wounded crew member in stable condition. In the second, slightly longer version of the film, the Sunderland crew returns home after the successful attack on the cruiser, and the wounded crew member is hospitalized. After a visit to the hospital, the film ends as the Sunderland crew is informed they will be re-deployed to West Africa, to begin a new mission.
This film is part of the Periscope Film LLC archive, one of the largest historic military, transportation, and aviation stock footage collections in the USA. Entirely film backed, this material is available for licensing in 24p HD and 2K. For more information visit www.PeriscopeFi...

WWII certainly interrupted what was one of the most romantic means of Travel: Seaplane/Flying-Boat
While certainly not as smooth a ride as modern jet-airliners, who travelled some 10,000 to 20,000 feet higher than the Seaplanes/Flying Boats, the on-board amenities of the latter far outshine Jet Airliners short of the A-380, or other long-distance Airliners.
Seaplanes/Flying-Boats we’re doomed to eventual obsolescence due to advances in Aircraft Range and Performance that occurred over the late-30s/early-40s, which was greatly sped-up by the War, but would have begun to be seen even without the war by the Mid-40s.

Those Beauforts were armed with Torpedoes, not bombs.

Yes, and in the second reel of the film, you see them drop 'em.

Is the Uboat chase and sinking at 12:00 genuine or studio and training film?

Likely from a training film and/or footage shot specifically for the Coastal Command film.

Rose White the oil spread at 13:00 is likely real footage of a dead U-boat.

JohnyG29 the 13:00 clip does look genuine so perhaps Coastal Command was on orders to film a genuine sub hunt?

Only the British can go from watching men in drag to killing men in Hugo Boss outfits.

Blister gunners on the Sunderland and Catalina armed with Vickers K guns.
