    • @nickm1242
      @nickm1242 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Which may not be a big deal if you have unlimited resources but when you think about it, with the metal you can use to make one giant sword, you can make a LOT of other weapons like spears, halberds, or even just more normal size sword.
      Sure fighting with one may not be as silly as most people think but when you have to make a choice between using the that metal and getting dozens of spearmen or one "badass" with a giant sword, well it's easy to see why they're mainly a videogame/anime type thing.

      which is why theyre impractical. the grade of materials was not good enough in the medieval times to create something that large without having durability issues. even if it was, youre using 4x the material and 4x the time if not more, to create a weapon that is disadvantageous in more ways than it is advantageous. its only real advantages is sheer terror, and if youre big enough to be able to wield this, youd be just as terrifying with a standard zweihander and youd be faster. theres a reason these swords only exist in fantasy.

    I think in order to counteract the dizziness from the spin you could do the technique ballerinas use and focus your head on one point while spinning. Say, you lock your head towards an object (like a door) and hold it for so long until you have to spin your head and then rinse and repeat. It's rather tricky to pull off and requires practice, but when it works it works.

      I wonder what Shad would think of the big sword moves from Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, or War's fighting techniques with Chaoseater from the Darksiders series. That franchise *thrives* on cool dark fantasy, but stuff like the Attack ( - Second Attack) - Turn Away from enemy - Attack have War do a quite realistic twirl in which he swings the Chaoseater behind him and ends in an overhead slam.
      I dare assume that the general shape and decoration on Chaoseater would fall positively within Shad's books too. Of course, one man's opinions aren't the be-all-end-all, but it'd just be neat to see worlds collide a bit like this.

    Your sword is now officially a siege weapon!
    On another note, you mentioned in the spin you actually felt the wind lift the blade. Why not capitalize on that, and make the blade in a shape to create more lift like a plane wing. The lift may lighten the load on the wielder during side slashes and spins compensating for some of the negative effects of the weight on the wielder.
    Technique wise incorporating the hips and other leverage points might be helpful. Such as recovery from a downward attack, with the blade on the ground using a hip push to start a slash may be a faster way to recover and attack immediately.

    • @huzrokhayzur2197
      @huzrokhayzur2197 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      lift means redirecting the air flow and thus creating friction. You would definintly get a lighter sword but a slower one and you would have to spend more energy to make it go forward (plane have thusters for a reason).
      Now if the sword has a turbo thuster like that Wyvern Ignition sword in MH i could see the lift as making it easier to move it up and down during a swing

    I had an idea for a story that involved a character getting scaling strength that quickly became super strength. Said character then proceeded to use super giant swords as his main weapon, partly for crowd control and partly for intimidation. For a bit more realism, the I thought the best ways to approach having super strength but not the weight would be a combination of dual wielding the swords in a specific style such that one sword would work as a counterbalance to the other, leaving the only issue to the wielding being the strength of the wielder. The other solution was super heavy plate armor, to increase the relative weight of the wielder to the sword.

    • @snowpegasi
      @snowpegasi 2 ปีที่แล้ว +114

      Could also claim that muscle and bone density increased with strength, with most of the weight coming from his super dense bones that had to strengthen to match the new tensile strength of his muscles, the super dense bones idea also helps with making bloodier fights without too much real consequences, like say the character gets caught off guard and puts their arm in the way, the arm would get sliced deep but it wouldn't go through the density of the bone.

      The only explanation I habe gor that is: monster Hunter can use their bioenergy to increase their strengh and resilience, that's why they don't bleed or break bones when bitten, fanged or stumped by monsters
      The said bioenergy shields their bodies and as long they have plenty of it, they can handle extreme levels of damage
      Also it explains why they need monster materiais to craft their weapons and armor, these materials allow them to channel their bioenergy better, woch results in effects such as elemental blasts or better defenses

    Dizziness can be dealt with, but what about actually striking something during your spin? I'd imagine having a grounded stance while swinging sword around would make you way more stable. Hitting someone in full rotation would most likely throw you completely out of balance.

    • @zixvirzjghamn737
      @zixvirzjghamn737 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      You can continue to spin and have the sword fall into your shoulder into rest position

    • @brianhsly
      @brianhsly 2 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      I'm sure he'll discover this pretty quickly when he actually starts to play around with it, but you use the rebound from striking to set up your next strike. When I was younger, my friends and I used PVC with foam to set up mock sword fighting, and I made a sword that was a foot taller than me.
      It's hard to get the thing stopping and going, and so you want to use active momentum as much as possible, and avoid having the sword go into a "potential energy" state.
      The rebound from a successful strike has SO much force, that it helps keep the blade in motion. Instead of resisting the rebound, you push into it, to set up your next swing. That next swing CAN be used to strike at your opponent again, but it doesn't have to. I often used it to get some space, or get my weapon back up to momentum again. Consecutive strikes often pummels your opponent into leaving an opening, but they also tend to gradually decrease your momentum.
      The sword is very easy to control and manipulate with momentum, and VERY hard to without it. You normally want some kind of leverage, such as setting up from the shoulder, to set it into momentum in-between attacks. You can't keep the momentum going constantly, or you'll tire yourself out.
      Using the ground to disrupt the momentum of opponents with such large blades is pretty effective. They will almost always jump back to try and get their sword back up onto their shoulders. That sets up an ideal time to make an attack.

    I thought the techniques Cloud Strife uses in Final fantasy 7 remake were interesting. His buster sword is basically a sharpened slab of metal with a handle. He is a "super SOLDIER" so it makes sense that he wealds this weapon. It's slow to get going but when he does it literally throws him into his attacks. He flows into each slash in wide arcs, throwing him around in almost a dance, instead of traditional sword work. Stance is VERY low to the ground and he is either using it like a shield, moving slowly; or almost dragging it behind him to move faster.

    • @vincentgraymore

      Leslie carries the sword with his arm straight out as he puts it onto the ground in Don Corneo's Mansion. The bustersword is supposed to be too heavy for normal people to carry. While I agree with you that they did a good job, there are times it simply looks like foam. In the “Last Order” FFVII animation, the weight of the Buster Sword really comes to the spotlight. Zack just stuck it to the ground to be a “sort of” shield cover for the injured Cloud. The basic enemy soldiers tried to take the sword but they couldn’t.

      @@vincentgraymore Checked it out. Not impressed. The stuff from the FF7 Remake is far more on point for realistic sword movements. Uses similar hip drive and pulling of the sword, I agree, but Cloud's movements facilitate more practical combination attacks without leaving the swordsman wide open for counter-attack between attacks or during the "posta" or "guardia" - the position taken between cuts that allows the swordsman to attack again or defend against the opponent's next attack. Unfortunately MH is a long standing game with moves dating back YEARS. It'd be difficult to break tradition at this point, not just because people already like the "signature" moves, but also because it might take Capcom another several years to achieve the same level of balance/polish.
      Would be better to take From Soft's approach: make a new franchise and experiment, and learn from that. Maybe slowly introduce those new lessons back into the more established franchise sequels.

    I made a a sword 1ft hand 5ft blade, 3/4" pvc pipe core and pool noodles make up the blade, and I've sparred with my friends with it a few times, what I've found is to be effective with it you absolutely have to preserve momentum along with leveraging off different parts of your body, arms, shoulders, legs. Everything has to flow, you really have to move your body in a very unorthodox way for it to work. Another method for when people close the gap and get real close is, tip to the ground you hold it up and your able to cut off a huge area significantly reducing how much of your body is visible, and how many ways they can attack you. Then you can push the blade, still vertical, into your opponent to strike or distract them as you get in on the grapple

    If you were trying to make an actual weapon with the characteristics of a giant sword, it seems to me based on the performance test that redesigning the giant sword to have an extra foot with a sort of pseudo-ricasso (the gripping point above a crossguard) where the edge is dull and possibly leatherbound would allow you to use your shoulder as a docking point (itself preferably armored and padded) to serve as the fulcrum and also allow you to pivot the direction of the blade. I could even see armor specifically designed to support this style with shoulder and bicep components shaped to help dock the weapon and reduce strain on the muscle and bone underneath.
    Furthermore, the actual blade beyond this point could be made much thinner and longer, or simply take a tuning fork shape to widen the threat range with two long, sharpened sprongs at the edge with no middle mass. Having this much weight put on the lower half of a massive, shoulder-pivoting weapon might allow you a remarkable amount of reach while providing a realistic weight distribution zone to center the mass around the body. I think having either a thin blade or a tuning fork shape would be essential, since wind resistance is the biggest problem with trying to weaponize what is essentially a giant flat plane. A hollow flute in the blade might also help with this problem.
    It would probably not be a great dueling weapon, but I presume it would be a menacing tool for a specialized combat role similar to a doppelsoldner. The ability to drop the sword and immediately switch to a side-arm theoretically could make it a valuable frontline tool. The biggest problems I see with it is manufacturing cost and training, and knowing when to read a situation and quickly abandon the weapon in favor of another. I also do not see pommel and crossguard blunt strikes being useful for dealing with something inside the blade's threat zone due to the weight, which is unfortunate.

      "I could even see armor specifically designed to support this style with shoulder and bicep components shaped to help dock the weapon and reduce strain on the muscle and bone underneath."
      honestly i think there are already armor styles that would be ideal to use as a starting point for that. example, some medieval shoulder pauldrons had large flanges rising off the shoulder in order to guard the neck from glance off blows. king arthur's armor in the film EXCALIBUR has flanges like this, though rather exaggerated:
      images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/59c9b7ead2b857a85063e490/1f7dc849-364f-4f7f-b1f5-33891e507d9f/Arthur.jpg
      if you put a second smaller flange just outside the first one, you'd have a natural valley inbetween them to rest the blade in. that would serve just fine.

    @10:30 another benefit of the grip on the blade is it gives you more leverage in static binds!
    Edit: One huge benefit of leveraging off your shoulders is that it allows you to engage your whole core and back into generating torque. I think an important focus for developing a style for the extreme sized swords would be removing as much "wind-up" and telegraphing as possible. The faster you can impart power and torque , the more you'll mitigate the lack of finesse.
    Another interesting thing to ponder is a technique similar to one used in baseball batting; you keep your arms/hands in a fixed position close to the body and effectively twist at the waist; this eliminates the moment arm between your body and the bat/sword using your core and posterior chain to generate the majority of your torque and acceleration. When your body reaches its rotational limit you engage your arms and whip the bat/sword to impart a burst of acceleration right before impact. This allows you to reach higher impact force in lower time frame as you use the largest muscle chains in your body to overcome the initial resistance, making it much easier for your arms to do their faster work.
    To try this IRL, basically throw a cut from the shoulder like at 12:50 - when the sword gets almost vertical, pull the pommel into your bellybutton and do an ab crunch as hard as you can trying to touch your shoulder to the opposite hip. Just before the cut impacts, perform effectively a zwerch movement with your hands to get that whip.
    Edit edit: As i was typing this edit to say I was going to do some dev, I hit the part of the video where you said you're going to do basically everything I was thinking as well. It'll be interesting to see what the differences are between what we come up with.

    While the emphasis was mostly on 2-handed swords, DS3's Abyss Watchers use (and imply) some very interesting 1-handed/paired techniques. For starters, while they use a sword similarly sized to the first one in this video, it's proportioned more like a claymore, which allows more traditional 2 handed use. Alongside this, they use a hardened, claw-like 'wedge', held with the blade pointing downwards. They use this dagger between attacks to mitigate some of the downsides of full-body heavy slashes, but it also plays a vital role in the reckless fighting style of the Undead Legion: throwing yourself around...
    Their swords are heavy but the Abyss Watchers themselves are only lightly armored, and they use this to great effect. For example, a move the player gains access to is to lunge fowards dagger-first, while starting a full-force sweep with the sword. The dagger stabs firmly into the ground and, using the massive inertia of the sword, the player slides 270° around the dagger while making a huge slashing motion with the sword. Granted, this is very dangerous, even within the setting (Undead Legion don't bother with shields because of the whole... Undead thing), but there are other, more general things to extrapolate.
    They tend to keep a low, hunched stance, for a lower center of gravity and for sudden lunges or leaps. They also utilise that savage stance, sword-on-shoulder rest position. When using lunging attacks, they put as much force into the swing as possible, to maximise the momentum they can gain. One thing that is absolutely vital is proper knee protection; They have flat metal plates over their knees, which is what lets them do all their fancy slidey moves on stone floors without getting the mother of all carpet burns!
    If I'm being honest, I lost the original point somewhere along the way, so tldr: backup dagger, spin to win, always wear adequate protection!

      ideally, if you want to shift the center of gravity, you'd want to remove mass from the tip of the blade instead
      a longer handle would probably give you more leverage, but the distance between the hands can only go so far before your arms start crossing into each other with some moves
      you'd also want one hand to be as close as possible to the center of gravity

    centrifugal force is the pseudo force experienced in a spinning reference frame, Its very easy to discuss the force in most scenarios as if it was real instead of describing it as an artifact of the inertia of the moving object. centripetal force is a real force, tho its exactly the opposite of the pseudo centrifugal force and shouldn't be used to describe it, Centripetal force is the force keeping the moving object from being released, in the sword example it would be your arms pulling on the sword, and the centrifugal force would be the sword pulling back on your arms, tho in reality its actually just the resistance of the mass of the sword to the acceleration you are providing with your arms.
    tl:dr centrifugal force isnt real but it is very close to real and a useful talking point so dont dismiss it, centripetal force is real but its not the same as centrifugal force and is infact the opposite.

      People rarely explain it in an unconfusing way. The simplest thing is that the force you're feeling is inertia. the fact that it feels like it's flinging you in the opposite direction of the pivot point is the fictional-force part. You're being flung in the direction you were last pointing because inertia. it's like the opposite of the escape velocity concept.

    • @angeldude101
      @angeldude101 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Centripetal force is not only the force from your arms on the sword, but the other way around as well, since every reaction has an equal and opposite reaction. Centrefugal force would be keeping your arms taught and preventing the sword from falling on the ground, though both are really just inertia viewed from a rotating reference frame.

    Shadiversity back at it again with giant swords! No complaints here.
    In all actuality, when you wondered what the recoil would be on a super massive sword like the Dragonslayer when deflected, I think the truth of the matter would be that if you make the slash in just the right way, there wouldn't be a deflection due to the sheer mass behind the weapon. Ultimately that would result in you playing either tee-ball with your opponent's weapons, or you'd just rip through them and their weapons like they were paper mache.
    That _is_ of course, assuming that magic metal wasn't used in whatever your opponent is wielding.
    Either way, the Giant Sword(tm) is definitely the archetypal "guard break" weapon.

    For the spin, dizziness shouldn't be an issue, Ballerinas can spin at a much faster rate without getting dizzy by focusing on a target and quickly spinning their head when necessary, which also has the benefit with this sword of allowing you watch your opponent(s). I feel that the full spin would also have an advantage in being less exhausting, since the motion relies on your core instead of your arms. I also think that recovery shouldn't be too much of an issue. You can initiate with wide slashes, getting the sword moving before you spin your core, and then recover by bringing your body to a stop while performing wide slashes into rest position.

      @@eyesyt7571 Shad told about real problem - moment of inertia (and point of balance).
      If you van lift 400 pounds - try lifting 200, but 0.5 meters away from you.
