Vernon actually got into rapping on his own, he was also part of the dance line pre-debut but was interested in rap and hip-hop more (I think the lyrics-writing and song-writing aspect of it appealed to him more) so that's why he ended up in the hip-hop unit.
Vernon has very diverse and eclectic music tastes, and brings a lot of the more "experimental" elements to Seventeen's music. Vernon's composition and production style is very easy to recognize, no matter the genre (listen to Rocket, Ash, Second Life, Gam3 Bo1, Chilli etc...)

even though this song is a collab with dj khaled, it still has seventeen's distinctive sound
