I have watched Part 2 and now watching Part 3. I have noticed several well-known and famous actors in character in both Part2 & 3. This is a very good documentary.
Best episode of this series ! On Victorian Britian, it shows the shame of a society which was to treat those who could care for themselves with comtempt ! Society can be judged by the way it treats its most vulnerable !
"It was celebrated as the greatest engineering triumph of modern times" - what is not clear is where the technical skills suddenly appeared from. How do you produce an army of Surveyors, Geologists, Tunneling Engineers, Railway Engineers etc needed to build a massive Underground Tube network, overnight? In this same decade 20,000 new homes, roads, shops, businesses and supporting services are also laid down - where were all these workers working prior to this decade of expansion? People, materials, money and logistics are just some of the problems that make our historical narrative problematic.
Listening to this as I have lived in London and sensed no depth or 'magic' in it. As I intend to stay, I want to find some interesting stuff in it. Mind you, I see museums and galleries but compared to the endearing charm of Yorkshire, that's not much. I need stories I suppose to like a place.

Just like predatory capitalism. They are all isms. Depends upon the corruption of human beings the way it plays out. Usually totally corrupt within a short time
Sadly his anti establishment and royalist view vastly skew and undermine the accuracy of his findings, interpretations and recordings across much of his work. If you read any Ackroyd work also reference other sources to obtain an informed balance.
The greatest city remark is not an endorsement or an approval of Victorian London. It's a comment on its size, financial power and the reach it had across the world at the time. I'd have thought that from the tone of this documentary this was blindingly obvious.
Thanks, I've been waiting for part 3 since the last Roman legions departed Britain.

Thanks for putting this on utube !
Brilliant. Dark.

Still sad to think that in London Pooor he described the people as "savages". Why the east "the dark side associated with poverty and squalor"
Wow!!! I've been waiting so long for this. Thanks so much for uploading! xo

@34:36 Tom Hollander evidently has never heard any of the many recordings of Eliot's voice. 🤣

We are just morlocks these days. Accelerating towards a catastrophe for everyone.
37: 37 is eerily prophetic of 7/7.
He says it is utterly impersonal and says something about the glance earlier too
38:30 lonely and desolate
Earlier used the word
Imperonsal
East is usually poor area of any city, town ...West, wealthier ...North wealthy ...South, where comedians reside usually 😉😎
Engles the creator of the greatest evil in history to come out of good intentions but unleashed a monster than devours

Only poets, rich authors and fiction writers have the answers.
That s why we have not got the answer yet
Don't be ridiculous. They don't have the answers and this doc doesn't suggest they do. They have the vision to ask the questions.
