Тонкое интонирование , текучесть, ясность полифоничной музыкальной ткани ..... Талантливое исполнение!!! "О дар твой славный Бах не только тешит уши, в разумных существах он возвышает уши..." БРАВО !!!

Interestingly, the articulation is very much of the kind where fast tempi are required in order to play non-legato. There isn't anything like the level of experimenting one finds with Gould, who could play with varied articulation at any tempo..

Sorry to disagree, but I can play Bach. I've been told I play quite well. I play several segments and dances from the English and French suites, Goldberg variations, even tackled some of the Art of Fugue. I've memorized them, play them at tempo, run through the repertoire daily. I cherish Bach. But to compare my ability to his is laughable. Bach is an unfatjomable giant and I am a flea. Years after I've memorized them I STILL find new depth in pieces he wrote in hours or days. The only difference between me and someone who can't read a note of music is that, perhaps, I might have a better sense at just how inferior I am. Bach was the greatest musician who ever lived, IMHO

polyphony at high speed is like a drug
the articulation is indeed impressive, which is always a challenge to attain at a any speed because there are so many things going on at the same time
there is so much color and emotion with a certain sparkle that very few Bach interpreters seem to have, Bunin had it, maybe a few others in addition to what we are privileged to hear in this performance

Hello there! Oh believe me, you can never get bored playing Bach:- )But still, I understand what you mean. Yesterday I was listening to a podcast I love: On Being with Krista Tippett. She had the famous writer Elisabeth Gilbert on the programm. Having written several great books Gilbert said: any interesting thing is 90 percent boring. But if you insist on the routine and keep working, then something happens, a transformation that makes all your efforts worthy again. She says she grew up in a farm and this is exactly what happens there too. She got the " perseverance" from there, back then.
It is a very inspiring and fun conversation about life, creativity and wisdom. I highly recommend it to you.
      Best wishes!

I have to agree with you. I cannot get tired of Bach. When I played the Italian Concert and the Goldberg Variations and was always happy to sit down to them again. Even after 6 hours, I had to force myself to stop because it was hard on the hands.
I agree with +jag5316 with regard to some music, however, such as a when I studied the Bartok Sonata. By the time is was "stage ready," I was happy never to hear it again. But Bach? He is my "desert island" composer.

It's an extremely diffcult piece to play (the prelude especially), and it's shocking how easily Ivo gets into this music. Ok...he is a super-star for a reason, but really even many other famous pianists struggle to make the piece beautiful. Of course the *music* is beautiful, but to play it well on a piano, when it was not written from the piano, is a very difficult challenge.

When I first this heard this as a recording on DG I was literally blown away - especially by the differences between the Prelude and the Allemande.
Another interesting aside - in this version of the Prelude he plays the music as written with regards to the repeats. In the DG recording he played that last section again - sure it’s amazing playing but I am glad he went back to score at this point:-)

He does this piece great justice. Some of his mannerisms whilst playing are reminiscent of Glenn Gould. Of Gould, I'll say that he's one of the very few pianists who could ever capture, distill and deliver Bach's essence flawlessly.
It's also of my opinion that the true greats, regardless of genre, lest for Top 40 pop drivel where talent is nonexistent, truly feel the music that they play in a manner that most can't. Glenn Gould, Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock and Ray Charles are shining examples of this. Each felt/feel every note that they play(ed) with a depth that we'll never truly experience unless we are in their tier.

He plays it like it were jazz, every line of melody clearly heard. He interprets freely, not being slavish to the score but letting each line be clearly expressed equally with wonderful accents. Artistic and beautiful. He ends any controversy over whether it is proper to play Bach on a modern piano instead of harpsichord. The answer is clearly and emphatically, yes!

Pogorelić and Gould were both meant to play Bach. Utterly amazing and fantastic.

The Sarabande uses 8 scales: Major, Harmonic minor, Harmonic Major, Melodic, Hungarian minor, Harmonic minor b5, Locrian natural 7 and Neapolitan minor. The alternate version known as Les agréments de la meme Sarabande has a much improved sequence of modulations from bars 14 -21: C Major - E Harmonic minor - E Hungarian minor - B Harmonic Major - E Melodic - D Major - G Major - B Neapolitan minor - B Harmonic minor - B Harmonic Major - E Melodic - E Major - A Major - A Harmonic Major - A Harmonic minor - C Major - E Neapolitan minor - E Harmonic minor - E Locrian natural 7 - F Major- D harmonic minor. This is what gives the second half its ethereal quality.

+Kamila Woźniak Every bit of it is a perfect realization of EXACTLY what HE wanted to do with it. Others may have different ides as to how they think the piece OUGHT to sound, but that is always subjective. By any reasonable standards this is superb, absolutely flawless, refined and highly expressive playing.

The Pogorelich of those years is one of my favorite classical pianists, below nobody. In particular, this rendition of Bach's suite is wonderful with such a "quadrature" and expressiveness.
This DVD recording and a live concert video in Tokio (I think) are two very special musical moments for me.
    Thanks for putting it here.

I don't think the comments I've read through mention the hands and the shape of the fingers. Otherworldly perfect and relaxed fingers. This is a classical pianist.
