➡️ One of our Patreon members mentioned that hearing "Hey" by The Suicide Machines was simply required of me when exploring the ska punk scene. I see why, because this track QUICKLY pulled the rug out from under me and actually made my cheeks sore from smiling until the song's last second. Why does this song sound like two different bands within the first minute? I didn't expect a horn section after a Sabbath-era metal intro - that's for sure. In this episode, I discuss how the horn melodies add a deeper melodic edge to Jason Navarro's more "rhythmic" vocal lines, the killer bass lines from bassist Royce Nunley, their "abridged" 12-bar blues phrasing which peps up the song's energy to tremendous levels, a breakdown of the song's chord progression and riffs, and a reaffirmation of my love for Derek Grant's drumming. This one got me, y'all. 🤩🎺🎸

Derek Grant is such a beast. His drumming on this entire record is insane. I saw Derek play a couple of weeks ago with the Vandals and he's still got the gift. He's also got a channel on YT where he posts lots of cool drum cams and exclusive footage. There's a Matt Freeman connection in this song. At 8:54 of this video, you can hear the Suicide Machines give a nod to Operation Ivy by doing the same "Insane" line from the song "Here We Go Again".

As a 43 year old this channel is basically reliving my teenage years spending night after night at First Avenue in Minneapolis watching The Suicide Machines, PennyWise, NOFX, Dinosaur Jr, Propaghandi, LagWagon, Goldfinger and so many more... I even completely blew my ACL out watching Primus there one night and had to be carried out. Fantastic picks. Might I suggest Skankin Pickle or Voodoo Glow Skulls since you seem to love fast punk/ska as future potential listens.

Love Suicide Machines. Fun fact: Seeing as how they are from Detroit, the singer Jason Navarro also fronted the brutal Detroit Hardcore band, Cold As Life for a short time when the band reunited after their original singer was shot to death in his sleep. Also, check out Jason Navarro’s other band, Hellmouth. Brutal Hardcore with a splash of Death Metal. You won’t be able to believe it’s the same singer. The album after this, 1998’s Battle Hymns is my favorite Suicide Machines album. It’s a lot heavier and mixes ska with very fast and heavy Hardcore. Thanks again for the great reaction video. I don't know if that bass player, Royce, still has his studio in Detroit, but in the early 2000's a band I was in recorded at his place. I remember one of our idiot guitar players checking his guitar with the opening riff of Hey. Royce just sat there and waited. When the guy nervously laughed I remember Royce just saying "no, keep going play the whole song" of course the guy had no clue how to play the rest, but Royce was a very funny guy that could keep a straight face through anything he said. My buddy plays in an Oi band and crosses paths with a lot of guys in that scene (Jay Navarro sang on a track on his album a while back). Royce was moving out of the area and my BIL got his old couch. I've seen this band live more times than probably any other band. DETROIT! I've been traveling the world for a while now living as a nomad in South America and recently my brother saw Jay Navarro play with a different band at a brewery. He went and talked to him after the show and mentioned to him that he was such an inspiration to me and that I was an inspiration to him. My brother letting one of my idols know that he had such a positive role in people's lives makes me so proud. Long live this fucking band.

I was fortunate to see Suicide Machines at 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis back in the mid/late 90s. Blue Meanies was one of the opening bands (and I think Marble from Mankato, MN). Around that same time I got to see Rudiments at The Java Joint in St Cloud, MN.
Highly recommend Blue Meanies and Rudiments!

My band played with them like in 2004. Watched them a couple of times here in Puerto Rico. What a great group of guys. Jason was always very friendly and we chatted quite a lot during those days. I’ve lost contact with them through time but I hope everyone is doing well.

"Relying on his fingers and the Foto Flame Jazz's snarling rear pickup for his raw tone, Nunley infuses cheery major scales with pure punk 'tude on several Destruction tracks ... The 20 year-old Motor City native plies his band's debut release with confident, warp-speed grooves and jaw-dropping fills that bespeak a listening diet of equal parts Specials and Minor Threat." ~ Bass Player, Jan 1997 🤜

I got so excited when I saw that you reviewed this! Seen them 6 or 7 times, but I remember hearing this song when it came out in ‘96 and I told my best friend ‘it’s like 5 songs in 1!’ Second album has more short hard songs. Third album is a little poppy but good. Albums after that were mostly punk. Love them and they still do live shows here and there. Great band! Thanx!

For a fun tie to most of these reviews you've done, Destruction by definition was mixed by Jerry Finn. He also did mixing and production on albums for AFI, Alkaline trio, Jawbreaker, Rancid and on and on... Basically most of what you've reviewed, he had his hands on.
