Big thanks for this! It’s probably too late a decade later to send the first song I have been able to work on thanks to you’re great info presentation and teaching here, but it really helped a lot with how to wrap my head around the interface. I’ve been able to find out how to do things like basic effects (like retrig), velocity etc. and I know that’s only scratching the surface but it’s really made it possible to write in a way that I haven’t for a really long time! DAWs just don’t let me write like back in the stone ages using the first versions of Finale and this really feels like the same vibe bc I have to know what I want to make before I make it instead of relying on what sometimes feels like serendipity and the limits of what I can play in modern software. It’s really fun and I am super appreciative to find this wealth of info for the program!
Fantastic. Your tutorial explained every step that I needed to get started. I’ve tried using SunVox several times before but always got stuck. Now I’m on my way. FYI - I’m using the iOS version, but it’s easy to find the corresponding commands once you know where to go. Thank you! 😊
Thank you very much, great tutorial indeed ! One tiny suggestion, please give if possible the way to do the actions with the versions without keyboard. At the beginning you did it but sometimes you forgot. Habitually we can find by ourselves but sometimes we don't have any idea how to do it (for instance how to insert a rest like you did with the tilde key) I cannot wait to see the next episodes and make some great music :-D Thank you again for such quality of tutorial, it's a real pleasure to learn thanks to you.
Hi,many thanks for your tutorial Sunvox. I have used it on debian stretch 9 with repository kxstudio on old imac 24 ( not mac osx partition) only gnu linux debian ciao
Awesome tutorial, and presentation as well. I do some tutorials for my students and I struggle at making them visually interesting. I liked the way you showed the 'computer keyboard'-'piano keyboard' relationship. How did you do that? Any particular software?
Thanks :) I modelled the keys in Blender, so I had the still images, then I wrote a small script to run in Löve2D to fade the keys whenever I wanted it.
Daedalus Young I was looking up this program, but can't find anything regarding it's use... Do you know if there are any licensing restrictions with what you make with SunVox? Or are you allowed to use it freely for both non-commercial and commercial use?
If you save it as a .sunvox file, you can open it again in SunVox and play it, or you can open the main menu on the top left, select 'Export/Import', then 'Export to WAV' and you can save it so it can be played in any sound player.
hey, how can i remove the interruption thing from the pattern (the caps lock function), because when i use the backspace button it ends up messing with the rest of it
Excuse me. My... hmkhm... English might be very bad, so I didn't understand one moment. On 50 minute, when you set the last note of fluit, you cut its time of playing. Can you 'type!' here how, plz?
+Seth V-K In Preferences > Interface, you can change the Scale. This does not just change the font size though, but it resizes everything, and it only seems to go in integer steps, so scale 100 is 1x size, scale 120 doesn't change anything, but then scale 200 steps to 2x size, so that makes everything twice as large. There's also a separate Scale option in the Pattern menu, this only resizes the Pattern window. And you can scale Modules too, both for Modules individually, in the Module properties dialog, and for Modules globally, in the Modules menu, but that doesn't change the font size. So possibly a combination of changing the overall Scale in Preferences, then resize Modules, so the font size is different, but the Modules are still the same size. Not very intuitive, but I think it might work.
Ah yes, I don't use the mobile version myself, but I know about this. The timeline is hidden by default, so it doesn't use up too much screen space. You can still toggle to it, I hope this helps: www.warmplace.ru/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2412&p=7806#p7806
I personally think you explain things a little too much. Example I can see the line is thicker and then goes much dimmer and the dots flow towards where the sound come out of. Besides things like this great video
Thanks for your comment. I see what you mean, I thought it might not be obvious what the thicker line means to new users, so that's why I included that. Future tutorials are less aimed at beginners, so I will assume more prior knowledge.
I've been a bit too busy, so haven't had a look at 1.9.3 yet, but I'd imagine the basics haven't really changed that much. If there's anything you're stuck on, feel free to leave a comment and I'll try to help you with it.
Some beginners might not want to invest too much if they're not sure they want to continue writing music. Otherwise, yes, a midi keyboard is the first thing to get when you're serious about making music. I started writing music on a computer that didn't have midi capabilities in a time peripherals weren't so easy to obtain, so it's second nature for me to use the computer keyboard. Even now I do have a midi keyboard, I still use the computer keyboard a lot. That's a matter of preference of course :) I've been planning to do a tutorial with the midi keyboard, just having some minor problems with the screen recording software.
The one thing Sunvox lacks is a simple manual to explain how to do stuff like this. Thanks for making my compositions about ten times easier!
Thanks, I'm glad you find it useful :)
I have that same problem too.

@@PaulHofreiter thanks for your comment, I'm happy to hear my video helped you get started.
+Ashwin Rawat You're in luck, I just finished a tutorial on triplets, it will be out soon! Thanks for your comment :)
That tune sounds like it's the intro to a 1980s corporate promo video. Seriously though, great tutorial.
+Thomes Maisling (Thomaise) Haha, thanks :)
Can't believe this stunning software is free and available for almost any platform; It's even available for my Palm TX!
Your "not the greatest song" is actually pretty sick! Sunvox has a nice feel to it, the patterns even look like runes, mystical stuff
Haha, thanks. Yeah, it's awesome software, and how it generates those images is a really nice touch.
very good tutorial it's so clear that even me French, with little understanding of English to understand everything
Merci beaucoup! :)
I'm glad you like it.
Excellent beginner tutorial.
I learned everything I need already in the middle of this video :)
Great tutorials, only just found Sunvox and this series of videos
Thanks, I'm happy to hear you're enjoying the software. It has seen a lot of improvements in the past few years as well.
Thank you so much! This is really helpful. Solar Lune is also great but outdated by two years. Please make more.! :D
Thanks! Yeah, I do like SolarLune's videos, he's been an inspiration for me :)
Thanks man. Sunvox looks daunting at first, but it's actually quite intuitive.
+laweffect Yes, and it's very versatile, the Modules allow for so much freedom.

Not sure if your still around but great work!
Thanks!
Thank you for de tutorial. Your explanation was good and your accent is very agreeable.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it :)
Super Super heplful!
At first i was intimidated by the boxes and numbers and all that complicated stuff but you made it look more simple.
Awesome, glad you like it!
Perfect intro tutorial. Thanks!
lordcolor Awesome, thanks :) Glad you like it!

Thanks, that sounds good, it's cool SunVox is available on so many platforms.
ohh, so hard to start. Thanks for tutorial
Thanks :)
Bedankt man. Kan er mee verder.
Graag gedaan :)

muy bueno, gracias

Daedalus Young I was looking up this program, but can't find anything regarding it's use... Do you know if there are any licensing restrictions with what you make with SunVox? Or are you allowed to use it freely for both non-commercial and commercial use?
Afaik, you're free to use it for any purpose. If you're in doubt, you could ask about it on the forums, but I wouldn't expect it to be a problem.
Thanks for the reply :)
Mister daedlus can you please tell me when you save your song how to play it please I don't know how
If you save it as a .sunvox file, you can open it again in SunVox and play it, or you can open the main menu on the top left, select 'Export/Import', then 'Export to WAV' and you can save it so it can be played in any sound player.

Thankz :)
Pavel Ti You're welcome :D
hey, how can i remove the interruption thing from the pattern (the caps lock function), because when i use the backspace button it ends up messing with the rest of it
Use the Delete key to remove notes. Backspace shifts everything up 1 line.
thanks :)
hey i really love this software! How do you change the speed and tempo?
Top left corner (where you load/save projects), go to "Project Properties"
Good tutorial, I think I know the basics. Except for some hotkeys I missed that I'm too lazy to go over
Thanks :) That's fine, if you find that you'll use them, you'll learn them eventually.
Excuse me. My... hmkhm... English might be very bad, so I didn't understand one moment. On 50 minute, when you set the last note of fluit, you cut its time of playing. Can you 'type!' here how, plz?

good tutorial. However you keep using the term 'swing' out of place. There is no swing in any of this ;)
Hey I am using mobile and I can't find the time line

And thus, my tracker induced spiral into madness begins. In all seriousness tho, thanks for these tutorials!
npc 946 You're very welcome, glad you like them :)
This app is very good but would much better if it has the option for piano roll to enter notes. Unfortunately it doesn't
it should
Plzzz play more mincraft I love watching u ur epic
Cameron Cloutman I will do :)
I smell a Dutchie. Bedankt voor de uitgebreide uitleg.
Goed geroken, haha :)
Heel graag gedaan, bedankt voor het kijken :)
Watch at Speed 1.5
lollllll
Thanks. This was a good tip.
Сокращается время просмотра, а восприятие только улучшается на этой скорости.
Looks like im gonna have to bookmark this page and watch this a few hundred times before i learn....Hahaha
Thanks for the video tho..
+Seth V-K You're very welcome, my friend, I'm glad you like it 😊
Great video but He goes too slow in my opinion. 2x speed and a bit of skipping and I got all the goods.
Good, glad you still found it useful :)

the new update makes this tutorial not helpful.

Why not get a midi keyboard Instead of the pain in the butt of using a computer keyboard.

Whoever gave this a thumbs down would give a cure for CANCER a thumbs down!!!!
I gave up after 17 mins too SLOW
Meh. No piano roll. Dealbreaker
Thanks man. Sunvox looks daunting at first, but it's actually quite intuitive.
