So happy I found your channel. I used to live in Alaska but because I am older now my knees don't allow me to enjoy it anymore, i now live in Florida and miss Alaska so much. TY for sharing your life in Alaska for those of us that can't live there any more.
Our mother never allowed us to help or teach us. Her kitchen was her domain. My sister and I could only set the table & clean up. Over many years, I’ve taught myself to cook & bake. I love making hearty meals during the winter months. ☃️🎄🎅
My mom was the same but my grandmother was different , she taught me a lot . Did you get any of your mother’s recipes? It would be fun to try and duplicate something from your childhood 😊 Happy holidays!
You guys are my absolute favorite! I’m thrilled I stumbled upon your channel. It’s so refreshing to see a channel that isn’t overproduced and is beautiful because it’s just you guys doing your thing. I feel like even homesteading channels have started to get un relatable and the content very predictable and a lot of sameness. You guys have “the homestead basics” but you are doing it in a very practical and simple way (that I’m sure doesn’t feel simple because it takes all of the time in your days) that is a very nice vlog-style. Looking forward to seeing what your Alaska winter days are like! Your chicken coop is so cool and I LOVED your wreath making.
Thank you SO much for the kind words! We appreciate that greatly. ❤️ We just try to document our life, we would be here doing the same thing no matter what! 😊
I have now binge watched all your videos. I love Alaskan homesteading content and I really enjoy your frugality and resourcefulness. All the foraging and herbalism knowledge you impart is wonderful. Your channel is also a nice contrast to the other content available where people clearly have hundreds of thousands of dollars invested in their infrastructure, equipment, etc. That's not really available to most people in my opinion. To see what you've done to improve the place in such a short time with found and repurposed materials in fantastic. I predict your channel will be growing in leaps and bounds!
Holdfast in our language Danish means hold on and was one of the reasons my eyes stopped by yr Channel. Its incredibke what you can make in the kitchen while involving your child and your audience. TY enjoyed your vlog.
I live off grid in far north Ontario on a small lake. We have egg chickens too, (14). If you give your chickens nesting boxes you will find your eggs much cleaner, about the size of a milk crate is perfect (we have 4 side by side) lined with straw bedding ❤and only about 3 feet above the floor. And chickens also love roosting perches about 4 or 5 feet above the floor using a 2×3" or 2×4" for comfy resting all through the night. We have more snow than you guys, lol. ❤
I found you all about a week and a half ago. I watched your first video and subbed went to the oldest and have been watching your catalog. This is the last one!!! I officially have watched them all so far. I hope you keep them coming I love watching channels grow and I really think you all are going to grow. Glad to be an early part of you channel family....
Beautiful! What is the fan on your woodstove called? Your daughter has a special life with you. She is learning so much. She seems like a very joyfilled little girl. God bless you all. I pray His hand upon you. Congrats on your new land, too!❤
I’m so excited to watch your channel. As you can probably tell I’m brand new here and I can’t wait to share your channel with my son and daughter in law who I know will love it. I just wanted to say that I love your little one’s excitement about life and her optimism. She has such a cheerful attitude that is so sweet! She hasn’t been exposed to all of the material things in life that people don’t need and she is proof of the beauty that comes from being without it. Just listening to her happy little voice has me feeling good throughout your entire videos. You’re doing an amazing job as parents!❤❤❤
Thanks so much for the kind words! ❤️❤️ We are fortunate to be able to spend so much time with her. We appreciate you sharing and watching our homestead journey! 😊
I love your dried fruit on your Christmas tree I grew up with primitive antiques in my house and my aunt's house so I grew up with that kind of a lifestyle my whole life and I think it's absolutely beautiful popcorn on trees string and cranberries very beautiful gorgeous gorgeous tree I love it love it love it
Friendly suggestion , Next year check along the ground near the tree and see if you find some "running cedar" aka garland....I grew up gathering it so we could decorate. It smells amazing!!!🤗
Watch this video twice now again I love that you guys are frugal but when you do stuff and you make it matter I love that you did these reefs they're absolutely beautiful don't do not criticize your work it's very good and it looks great on your cab and your cabin is beautiful and like I said your things that you do have purpose and that is wonderful love everything you do on New to your channel
Me too. I love the simple life away from the hussle and bussle and people who are hateful, mean, and ALL about me! For this couple to be so young they know a lot about how to live in this cold environment and make it work.
Just found your channel around noon today… here is it 5pm and still watching, thank you guys for taking the time to post such informative and entertaining videos!!!!! Happy Holidays from Sweet Maple Ridge!
When i was a kid living on a farm in MO we would go out and cut a cedar tree . Beautiful memories, smells sooooooooo good. Love your videos thank you for sharing . ❤ The wreath is beautiful as well as the Christmas tree. ❤🎄
Congrats on the new property! New subscriber from the desert southwest, already binge-ing all your videos :) I love how careful you are with how much you show of Lena!
Love to cook nice meals and grow my own vegetables. I envy you with that. I few yo on a farm milking cows feeding chickens and other barn animals. It was a very good life. We went to a one room school house until great six. Life was good sliding skating buildings now forts wtc
Hi everyone, very nice video, a nice family get together and getting ready for the holidays. Your tree is very nice and looks good decorated. Great job on the wreath.
Enjoyed your video so very fun finding your Christmas tree and making ornaments. Your wreath looks nice on your home. Your bread looked yummy! Really enjoying life.
I see others like me just found your channell!! Snowy morning here in NY. Love your channel. I shall be sipping my coffee and watching your videos this morning. Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year for your family and youtube channel!!🎉❄️⛄️
New subscriber here! So nice to see people who have made their self sufficient dream a reality. Great video and I love the homemade wreath, going to give that a try myself!
Congratulations on the new property especially with the pole barn you’ll have some extra shelter space too and love the Xmas tree & wreath if you put the branches in hot water their easier to bend & shape and the sourdough bread looks great ❤
I think the chickens could use some tlc in their lonely little coop out there in the Alaskan wilderness 💯🧡🌿🕊️❕ some radio music, special greenery bedding, some pretty colored blankets, some cozy hutches - one for each hen 💟❄️❕ stuff like that! Poor lonely little birds all cooped up all long lonely winter in the gray coop! 🐦❄️💔❕
Greece are really beautiful and I'm new to your channel and I just really like you guys trying to be frugal and live really off the Earth you got good taste good style and I really like your channel and I'm going to start watching you every day I'm a security guard and I watch can watch the crap out of you and give you a lot of watch hours
Now that’s amazing you already have goals set with your new land and the whole homestead. That water is safe to drink as is? You ever planning on doing a live show? Thank you!
Thank you 😊 we do boil the water we use to drink. Though, many who use this spring fed creek don’t! We do have plans on doing a live homestead tour soon. 🏡
I stumbled on your channel this week and really love your videos; thanks so much for sharing what your life is like with the rest of us. Also, it’s fascinating to see all the many ways you are self-sufficient. I have three questions that I’ve not yet seen answers to in your videos. First, what’s the bear situation like? Do you carry spray or a rifle when you go out? Do you generally know where they are or is it always a surprise? Also, you mentioned the closest town is 90 minutes, but also mentioned neighbors in another video. Despite the remoteness from a town, is your area settled and how close/how many neighbors are in your area? Lastly, are you able to have a garden or cold-frame in the warm months for growing vegetables? Maybe these are answered in future videos. :)
Great questions! We do have quite a few bears in the area, but they tend to stay away. We generally see them in spring and fall; they have torn into the outhouse a time or two and stolen gas cans. We do always carry protection, even in winter months. Spray is usually our first line, for a curious bear, secondary we always carry a firearm. If we are going somewhere we know there are lots of bears, like the river, we bring a shotgun. There is a small frontier community here of about 80-100 year round residents, and a small school. We are spread out, but still help each other! Gardening is very do-able, and growing beautiful veggies with all the sunlight in the summer is so fun! Raised garden beds, cold frames, are key!
Good for you buying that extra piece of land. Under all is the land! You now have many more options for your family and the future. But you knew that! I have had Boar goats, but regardless they are tough and self sustaining and so funny too. Great teaching moment for your daughter too. Very nice video.
Yes! Super easy, can be doubled of halved if you want less- 1C water 1C flour - mix well. Repeat for 5 days, discarding some before feeding to make room. When it’s active and bubbly you are ready to bake! 😊
Super cool!! Congratsr on the new property! I've been binge watching you vids!! Do you pay property tax where you are at? If so is it much? I ve been looking in to Ak so I am curious!! Thanks!! Stay WARM!!!
Love your videos! In a year when our lease is up, my husband and I are planning to live in a remote part of upstate NY in the Adirondack Mountains (not as rural as your lifestyle, but still a significant change from living near Chicago). Are you ever worried about being far from a hospital or medical care? I have heart racing issues, so my only concern living farther out from a suburban/city area is not having access to a hospital if I need it. Thanks!
Thank you very much! Our nearest big hospital is 4+ hrs, medical center 1.5hr. A major emergency would be a concern, for that we do have a SAT phone and if needed, they would send a helicopter for transport to a hospital (or transport via helicopter from the nearest medical center). We try and be cautious as best we can, but that is a factor of living remotely. I am planning on taking some emergency medical courses this winter as well, that may be helpful to look into before your move! We wish you luck and happiness in the move ❤️😊
@@holdfastalaska Thanks for the well wishes! That's a great idea to take some emergency medical courses just to be prepared. I think we would be about an hour from a big hospital, which is so much different than the 10 minutes now. But I guess that is the reality of living farther away and experiencing the beauty of rural living!
Where do you get the electricity from? Do you use a generator, I didn't see any solar panels. Love your channel and your lifestyle. Keep making videos please.
Right now we are on a diesel generator; we will be getting a solar set up as we have had on our past homesteads soon. Self install, and we will share how we do that cost effectively!
It’s super easy! Our video before this one, shows step by step. But simply add 50/50 flour and water to a jar once a day for 7 days. When it’s bubbly it’s ready to bake with! We were gifted this fan from a neighbor, but I have seen them at hardware stores as well.
I just started watching your videos literally today, I enjoy it very much... I am curious how you make an income, I'm not trying to be invasive by asking this question & of course you don't need to answer if you choose not to... I wish your family much health & happiness, I'm looking forward to watching more 👍👏👏👏💜🌹😀
Thank you so much for watching! For us, this is possible because we took the 15+ past years slowly lowering debt, paying off homes and vehicles, and living minimal. No cable, fancy trips, ect. Learning the skills one by one in free time. Investing in tools such as ATVs slowly, saving money to buy outright. You have to be resourceful. We have done various things to support our homestead; from agriculture and herd shares, to real estate in the bush. You’ll find people in communities such as ours do a little bit of everything to make it work. There is no one solution. Subsistence fish and moose help, too!
I’m binge watching a few videos right now and just love your channel. I have a few questions Why did you move from your past home? Also, What’s the cost to purchase land like that? What do y’all do for $ there?
We wanted to move to a subsistence area form the Kenai. Too populated there- and hunting and fishing laws for subsistence are much better for a family off the land here. The cost varies greatly; depending on the access, buildings, location, ect. Very rural land that is fly in only can be cheap, while city living in Alaska is still pricey. We have done various home based businesses over the year to keep our homestead. We will be doing an intro video on us that will go more in depth ❤️ Thanks for watching! We are glad you enjoyed 😊
8:46 where I’m a new subscriber I’ve got a question you’ve probably already discussed. How many acres is your cabin sitting on and how many acres does the pole barn sit on? Curious is all.
The best part of every video is Dennis eating while standing and saying "this is really good"!
It may not be ‘perfect’….. but it is PERFECT!!🎄🎄🎄
❤️❤️❤️

My mom the same. Never cooked until I was 19. She was one grumpy woman
I can remember standing on a chair stirring the pot, also doing dishes.
That bread looks so marvellous, I can almost smell it!
Thank you, it came out really good! 🍞
amazing parenting. Your kid thinks life is just a big adventure.

You should think of doing birch sap in the spring it is almost as good as maple syrup and it is expensive too.
Great idea, and we are planning on it! Lots of birch around the homestead!
You’re so lucky to be living there. That would be my dream 💭
We feel lucky! Took years to get here!
Congratulations on the land! My daughter has goats here in Alaska. They do need slot more than brush of course.
Thank you! They most definitely do eat more than brush!

I think we would be about an hour from a big hospital, which is so much different than the 10 minutes now. But I guess that is the reality of living farther away and experiencing the beauty of rural living!
What kinds of meat do they eat/cook? Does the husband do any fishing or hunting? I've only watched 2 videos so far.
We both fish and hunt! Mostly moose & salmon 😊
Love the cabin
What’s the measurements on it?
Thank you! It’s 16x24
Nice! What kind of dogs do you have? Always wanted to do that with my dogs. Thanks for sharing, I know that takes a lot of time also.
A Cane Corso and a Lab mix! It’s definitely a dogs life in the woods 🎄
Put. Some pinecones around it 😊
Great idea!
How do you make the starter? So glad I found you tonight while sitting in house while it’s so cold
I also was wondering where you got your fan on your stove. Thanks
It’s super easy! Our video before this one, shows step by step. But simply add 50/50 flour and water to a jar once a day for 7 days. When it’s bubbly it’s ready to bake with! We were gifted this fan from a neighbor, but I have seen them at hardware stores as well.
@@holdfastalaska thank you so much. Have a wonderful Sunday!
❤❤
How many dogs do you have? I thought one, but saw two in this video.
We have 2! ❤️
I'll admit i thought one of the eggs was a potato at first 🤣
🤣🤣
I’m binge watching a few videos right now and just love your channel. I have a few questions
Why did you move from your past home?
Also,
What’s the cost to purchase land like that?
What do y’all do for $ there?
We wanted to move to a subsistence area form the Kenai. Too populated there- and hunting and fishing laws for subsistence are much better for a family off the land here. The cost varies greatly; depending on the access, buildings, location, ect. Very rural land that is fly in only can be cheap, while city living in Alaska is still pricey. We have done various home based businesses over the year to keep our homestead. We will be doing an intro video on us that will go more in depth ❤️ Thanks for watching! We are glad you enjoyed 😊
@ yesss!! Awesome! Some Q&A videos would be great! Truly love how knowledgeable you two are! It brings me so much joy. Stay warm!
What kind of dogs do you have? They are so cute!
Thank you 🐾 Tuck, our old man, is a 13 yr old lab mix. The mastiff is a dog we are boarding for a friend!
Ok how do you make the starter please
Add 50/50 water and flour to a jar for 5-6 days, discarding in between to make room! When it’s bubbly, it’s time to bake!
8:46 where I’m a new subscriber I’ve got a question you’ve probably already discussed. How many acres is your cabin sitting on and how many acres does the pole barn sit on? Curious is all.
The cabin sits on 4 acres, the abutting with the pole barn just under 4. Thanks for subscribing and following along! 😊
