So many performers rush those last few chords. This performance is close to perfect. Huge drama building to the resolution, and those descending bass notes leading to the ending are perfectly timed; with each chord, you can hear the overtones kind of swimming around each other. I also love how he seems to work in sympathy with the hall, using it at a natural reverb chamber to extend those silent moments toward the end. This might be my favorite version yet. Thanks for posting.
Geoffrey Simon It's every bit of the legendary Cochereau performance of this work and then some. The tempo is perfection itself which is a necessary ingredient in playing Messiaen. Stuff must be allowed time to "sink in".
Urban VIII Esztergom was the capital of Hungary between the 10th and 13th century. The cathedral is the largest church in Hungary, it is known for Cardinal Jozsef Mindszenty (1892-1975) Archbishop of Ezstergom.
I don't think I've heard a piece by Messiaen yet that doesn't send chills down my spine. I'd consider myself an atheist, but there is something about his music that makes me wonder...
David Bloom My thoughts exactly. His music takes me to a wonderous and magical place that transcends any belief I may have but as strong as any belief.
It's totally Biblical. It's impossible for me not to notice new things in it all the time - this time, I happened to realize that the final held chord with the Pedal underneath reminded me of the exact same dissonance with major thirds and minor thirds playing at the same time, created by the Renaissance motets, which, of course, were also about God. Someone should compile a list of these.
@confetto Yes, I know just what you mean! Virgil Fox plays a similar superb rendition of Dieu Parmi Nous on the organ at NYC's Lincoln Center. I've read that Fox also recorded Dieu Parmi Nous on the organ at Gloucester's Hammond Castle, which I suspect may exist only on an out-of-print vinyl album of Fox's.

Latry makes the build-ups in this piece REALLY ... well ... build up. The high drama of this magnificent work is fully expressed by Latry's playing.

I can not imagine a better performance of this work; simply superb playing!

I like the tempo - he gives the incredible dissonances time to really resound. This piece always makes the hair stand up on my back!

What an amazing instrument... and I read that the Cathedral's reverb time is 11 seconds ! To me this is pure heaven..
A very good version. Thanks a lot for uploading this!
This is so incredible, it brings tears to my eyes.

WOW!
I have never even heard of this cathedral!

Wow, what an incredible instrument, I only hear it for the first time!

It is the Via Pulchritudinus, the Way of Beauty always at the heart of the Gospel message. God among us.
De jó!
Very good!
love the acoustic fade at the finish
H & V. It was astounding! The fade was long enough and such that it gave me goose bumps all over my body! Wow..

Exzellente Interpretation!
it would have been terrorizing at 147 stops.
clarity!
Óriási élmény volt hallgati '96-ban. Nincs meg véletlen jobb minőségben?
...50 stops is a lot. If our organ had 50 stops I could play Widor symphonies. French Titulairs are spoiled. D:
Is this incredible recording available on CD? This organ is phenomenal, and the performance reminds me of Fox.

Absolutely brilliant! What a shame the audio quality is to so bad.
A shame indeed --- you really should get better headphones.
