Society hasn't thrown them away. It's put them in a place for them to think about what they've done to hurt others, themselves and their families. The issue is what all people can do more of, being accountable for our actions, instead of being in denial. I went into traffic court once. I pled guilty since I was. They said noone in the history of the court had done that. Just saying. We're so caught up in innocent until proven guilty that we forget the Eye that sees, the Ear that hears, G-d. This is a great teaching that I've thought of often. I've considered it in a different direction also, namely doctors who have the so called G-d complex. No matter how much they do, or how much of their G-d given skill they use, they don't save lives. G-d does. They also don't kill people, no matter their choices for treatment. Puts a whole different spin on the medical profession, though I don't think it complicates their liability for making a bad choice, being inept, etc. They still have to answer to people here for that.

Rabbi, thank you I love your information and dialogue. I just have a question that no one seems to answer, why did Jacob steal Esau’s firstborn right? He and his mother deceived Isaac. If he ‘sold’ it for lentil soup at 13, why wasn’t Isaac in agreement with that, why was he deceived then? Wasn’t that a life changing and future changing experience? It’s confusing.
I always wondered about this to. I believe G-d allowed Jacob to succeed because Esau did not value his position in the family and the calling on his life. But Jacob fought for it. Isaac would not be in agreement because it was against Jewish law. The firstborn Son got the Blessing. G-d had other plans and the one who valued it more, recieved it
