Such an amazing language, I always had heard that Hungarian is one of the hardest language in the world, now I can realize myself that it's really hard hehehe... I study Polish Language and for seeing these "SZ" frequently in Hungarian, made me think that was the same pronounciacion as in Polish. Now I see that both SZ in Polish and in Hungarian are quite different... Thank you for your videos, I'm really appreciate them... Szia from Brazil

Eszti these are WONDERFUL videos! I'm planning to be in Budapest for a month taking the CELTA course (a course in how to teach English as a second language). I went to a bookstore to find a Hungarian phrasebook and they didn't have any! But then I came home and watched your videos and just by doing that I am picking up some Hungarian. I also went to Duolingo and signed up for the "five minutes a day" program. I have about six and a half weeks before I leave - we'll see how much Hungarian I can learn in that time!

In the first 10 basic phrases. The word NAGY or the ng sound does exist in the English language. To be more precise not in the North America way of speaking, but in UK English absolutely. The word is ‘during’. The UK say ‘djuring’, same for news - ‘njews’, & Duke = ‘Djuke’. I hope this helps people tackling this unique language.

Egészségedre can be thought as a combination of two parts: egész and ségedre. The different s sounds (sz and s) next to each other divide the word and make it easier to pronounce. Think of Egees-scheegedre. Looks like German, ay? Quite not so hard now... or that's my opinion at least, as a Finn... the sz and s sounds in Hungarian are probably the most important ones to master since they are used a lot in general.

Thank you so much Eszti. I think your videos are perfect for learning. Not too long or too 'packed', and I love how you take the time to explain the correct pronunciation and also what the phrases mean verbatim, which I think really helps to grasp or get a feel of a language.
By the way, I'd be curious to know what Egészségedre means. ;) It is a 'random' term used only in this situation, does it actually mean something close to the english 'cheers'?.. In French for example we usually say 'santé' which means 'health', or if we are to chug our drinks down in one sip, we can say 'cul sec' which means 'dry ass' (since no liquid will remain at the 'bottom' of the glass.. ;))... So I'd like to know how Egészségedre translates exactly, if you or anybody reading this would be kind enough to enlighten me. :)
Also, one thing I always like to learn in a new language is how to ask "How do you say ... in (Hungarian)?". This way if I'm visiting, I can take the opportunity to ask the locals "How do you say this? How do you say that?" and hopefully pick up more words and expressions while I'm there... So that's one I'd like to learn if you continue to make videos. :)

Hearing those police sirens must mean that you are based in Budapest right? Love that city and would love to learn the language and one of my goals is to pick it up seriously this year. I'm in Budapest quite frequently so I guess I could practice with locals pretty often, but other than that: do you maybe have some good sources of literature/media (besides your videos of course :)) to learn the language?

    Gyimóthy Gábor, Firenze 1984. X. 12.
    Nyelvlecke
    Egyik olaszóra sodrán,
    Ím a kérdés felmerült:
Hogy milyen nyelv ez a magyar,
    Európába hogy került?
    Elmeséltem, ahogy tudtam,
    Mire képes a magyar.
Elmondtam, hogy sok, sok rag van,
    S hogy némelyik mit takar,
    És a szókincsben mi rejlik,
    A rengeteg árnyalat,
    Példaként vegyük csak itt:
    Ember, állat hogy halad?
    Elmondtam, hogy mikor járunk,
    Mikor mondom, hogy megyek.
    Részeg, hogy dülöngél nálunk,
    S milyen, ha csak lépdelek.
    Miért mondom, hogy botorkál
    Gyalogol, vagy kódorog,
    S a sétáló szerelmes pár,
    Miért éppen andalog?
    A vaddisznó, hogy ha rohan,
Nem üget, de csörtet - és
    Bár alakra majdnem olyan
    Miért más a törtetés?
Mondtam volna még azt is hát,
    Aki fut, miért nem lohol?
Miért nem vág, ki mezőn átvág,
    De tán vágtat valahol.
    Aki tipeg, miért nem libeg,
S ez épp úgy nem lebegés, --
    Minthogy nem csak sánta biceg,
    S hebegés nem rebegés!
Mit tesz a ló, ha poroszkál,
    Vagy pedig, ha vágtázik?
    És a kuvasz, ha somfordál,
    Avagy akár bóklászik.
    Lábát szedi, a ki kitér,
    A riadt őz elszökell.
Nem ront be az, aki betér . . .
    Más nyelven, hogy mondjam el?
    Jó lett volna szemléltetni,
    Botladozó, mint halad,
    Avagy milyen őgyelegni?
Egy szó - egy kép - egy zamat!
    Aki „slattyog”, miért nem „lófrál”?
    Száguldó hová szalad?
    Ki vánszorog, miért nem kószál?
    S aki kullog, hol marad?
    Bandukoló miért nem baktat?
    És ha motyog, mit kotyog,
    Aki koslat, avagy kaptat,
    Avagy császkál és totyog?
    Nem csak árnyék, aki suhan,
S nem csak a jármű robog,
    Nem csak az áradat rohan,
S nem csak a kocsi kocog.
    Aki cselleng, nem csatangol,
    Ki „beslisszol” elinal,
    Nem „battyog” az, ki bitangol,
    Ha mégis: a mese csal!
    Hogy a kutya lopakodik,
    Sompolyog, majd meglapul,
    S ha ráförmedsz, elkotródik.
    Hogy mondjam ezt olaszul?
    Másik, erre settenkedik,
    Sündörög, majd elterül.
    Ráripakodsz, elódalog,
    Hogy mondjam ezt németül?
    Egy csavargó itt kóborol,
    Lézeng, ődöng, csavarog,
    Lődörög, majd elvándorol,
    S többé már nem zavarog.
    Ám egy másik itt tekereg,
    -- Elárulja kósza nesz -
Itt kóvályog, itt ténfereg. . .
    Franciául, hogy van ez?
S hogy a tömeg miért özönlik,
    Mikor tódul, vagy vonul,
Vagy hömpölyög, s még sem ömlik,
    Hogy mondjam ezt angolul?
    Aki surran, miért nem oson,
    Vagy miért nem lépeget?
    Mindezt csak magyarul tudom,
    S tán csak magyarul lehet. . .!
Forrás: Transylvania, 40 évf. 2. szám.

Wowzerz you are an incredible teacher, my mother is Hungarian and I speak a bit. But when you explained how to say, What is your name, in a straight Hungarian translation it would be, What do they call you, rather than, what do you call yourself as you said. Do you agree?

The suffix of the verb - nak / -nek implies that it is done by them. Although first or third person plural suffixes are often used to express a general subject. It is used when the action or existence established in the predicate applies to everyone or everything.
      In this case ' hogy ' is a question word meaning ' hogyan ' ( how ).

i like your explaination is so good. hope you will keep this series up.
would be cool if you can teach me how to ask question like : how old are you ? what hobbys do you have ? where do you live? and then aswers like i do live 20 km from budapest. you know standard question and answers when you going to make friends or meet ppl . its just a idea if you like to make another video

    • @kispangit3912
      @kispangit3912 8 ปีที่แล้ว

+3sportoXD OK, just as an example for FORMAL speech - with that, you will never stumble into an embarrassment:
How old are you? - Hány éves Ön?
What hobbies do you have? - Milyen hobbijai vannak?
Where do you live? - Hol lakik? 20 km from BUD - 20 (húsz) kilométerre Budapesttől.
It gets complicated here. We have formal sing/plur and informal sing/plur.
Example, using 'Where do you live':
Informal singular: hol laksz? Informal plural: hol laktok (ti)?
Formal singular: Hol lakik (Ön/Maga)? Formal plural: hol laknak (Önök/Maguk)?

    Just 1 point:
Here, informal expressions are given. Hungarian, however, distinguishes quite strictly between informal and formal speech. Like German. So you can use these in informal situations, but I would be very embarrassed to address strangers in the street this way. Let alone higher ranking officials!

Awesome Islanders Hockey Videos nothing like he word egg. It is more like saying ‘eh’ with a very soft dge but then instead of the dge you add a bit of ‘ye’ at the same time. Dge like dodge but at the same time as ye. As if you were saying the dge/ye softly at the same time. Kind of like saying ‘dgy’esterday. But without the esterday.

    What about
    How much?
    Where is?
    Toilet?
    I would like

      +Darrell Bibby
How much? = Generally "Mennyi?" (in certain cases "Hány?")
      Where is...? = "Hol van...?"
You can also say "Hol találom...?" which means 'Where can I find...?'
Toilet = Written as 'WC', pronounced as "Vécé"
I would like = "Szeretnék..." or "Szeretném".
I suggest to use the "Szeretnék" version always if you don't want to go into grammar. People will understand you anyway.
Just until she uploads the next part. :)
