I watch Film Companion all the time with lunch or dinner. It feels like a friendly chat where I am actually giving inputs in the conversation. It was the only review I watched to decide whether to watch a movie. Every Friday I searched the web for your reviews. I will miss FC.
It's like one last retirement party of my teachers. I intend to start my own YT channel where I review movies sometime this year. I've mostly been influenced by Sucharita, Anupama & Jammy (in that order) and I hope I be even half as good as them when I debut on my channel. Fingers crossed. Thank you for everything. ❤
Imagine it’s middle of the night , you are watching a video of your favourite three people in a really low voice because your daughter and wife is sleeping and you are already so emotional and then you see your name being called upon , that kind of happiness and then I started bouncing everywhere and they both wake up and my wife understood how much it means to me and she hugged me and that kind of feeling is just top notch !!

The first FC film review I ever watched in 2015 was a “Not a movie review”.. and FC became a regular YT watch for me. I do watch Sucharita for the movie reviews nowadays but at the same time I miss the FC reviews on Fridays! I live in US, and movies, their discussions and interviews help connect me to India. I will miss FC and the place it had created in my life. Wish you all the best in all your future endeavors!
FC was such a constant all these years that now I dont know what to watch on TH-cam for a wholesome cinema content!! Struggling to find an alternate platform with such high authenticity and integrity! FC was the OG! Any chance you guys can still come back with FC? Actually dont answer that.. Okay, don't want to sound too dramatic but you 3 actually gave me the courage to start my journey into the film industry. I found your channel (FC that is) back in 2018 (yish that's 6 years...) when I was close to giving up on that dream and I randomly discovered a review for Piku to cure a little Monday evening blues so I decided to give that a shot (I'm based in Ethiopia btw) and I loved every minute of it, sure enough I decided to venture back to the channel and every Friday I eagerly awaited for new reviews, recommendations and even lessons in filmmaking from great minds like Soojit Sircar and Anuarag Kashyap and Kamal Hassan... You see, growing up in Ethiopia, even wanting to pursue film as opposed to traditional professions, would get you "looks" (think of Desi Aunti judgy looks dailed up to 11) and despite having a supportive family I was too scared to actually pursue it. Especially, because all of the films you see succeeding are big budget hollywood films all lead by Americans. Which makes the dream feel so distant. Indian Cinema (or even Bollywood alone for that matter) or cinema from any other part of the world was never presented in the same way. The stories we see in the movies also feel a little distant. So, when you watch a film like Piku, where you have the main character taking care of her father and he says literally the same thing your sassy, Ethiopian grandma says (constipated grandparents are universal), it makes you wonder "would people be interested in the stories I have to tell?" Which trickled down to my first show being greenlit on a modest African streaming platform (I can't name yet) and for the past 6 months I've been living the dream (mostly because I'm sleep deprived and the production is heavily underbudgeted). Sucharita tyagi In the beginning of FC days for the initial 3 yrs was a bundle of fresh energy ..she was the reason why people tuned into FC..her irreverent humour,her pjs everything ..somewhere around 2017 FC started to give more platform or an equal Platform to snooze fest king rahul Reckless Desai (video reviews) and somehow sucharita also started ;may be in order to appear pseudo like Desai ,giving more and more heavy intellectualised take on movies with vocabulary rivaling that of Chopra,she kind of started becoming like a spiritual child of Chopra and masand and that's why probably to remain relevant started occupying the same space in the consumer's mind in-spite of having a strong,funny unique voice herself..this was around the same time when lots of panwadi you tubers reviewers like filmy Indian,Sanju,prateek borade, Suraj kumar,yogi also sprung up and they started taking excerpts from desai's videos(his review of Kabir singh,Kashmir files) and started pining it on chopra..who atleast in public might have had a different take( As she herself admitted that she identifies with some aspects of Kabir singh having lived with a guy with anger issues for so long) ultimately a film review channel paid price for backing up a wannabe film critic .who if reditt circle talks are concerned is a kjo insider now.. Hopefully s.tyagi seems to be back on track with her own channel.
Just imagine Sandeep Reddy Vanga as the 4th participant in this conversation, it would surely become the biggest blockbuster youtube video of all time 😂
Rahul Desai says that earlier in his career, he used to get very angry in his reviews but now he has calmed down. I don’t think anyone really cares or notices these aspects or generally watches their reviews a lot. It reflects the misplaced sense of importance these critics have. They should really introspect why theirs views fell from 500k for a review earlier to what it is now. Bharadwaj Rangan was the only person who could be considered a critic with some craft amongst them - rest just a regular audience with an opinion
I still see old episode of let’s talk movies and put it on by my side when I am working. You three have probably shaped my understanding of films and through which perspective one can(sometimes must) see a film. Shaped my teenage years man. Rahul Desai ke reviews I still see in my leisure. You guys together were awesome. It’s just emotional seeing you discuss about the good old times. It’s simply sweet, melancholic and I am not even stretching it.
John Abraham recently talked about the sorry state of film journalism on a podcast. And I was like 'Bro forgot about FC!' I really pray Anupama comes back stronger and as a defining brand in this business. Best wishes❤
I discovered Film Companion when I was in high school. In 2014-15, the first interview I saw on this channel was that of Diljit Dosanjh. It was on this channel that I discovered him. I loved the Not a Movie review show by Sucharita, looked forward to Fc town hall and my favourite being Irfan sir's interview on this segment. really a big fan of the channel. I even watched Befikre because Anupama was such a big fan of the movie. I didn't like it but it's okay.
I can listen to you 3 non stop! Loved all the reviews on FC and this channel; would wait every Friday more excited for the reviews than the actual movie ❣️
I work alone in my small studio, and on days I feel like I need some friendly companions I find Film Companion. FC has been with me on good days and bad. Thank you for good times. As Anu says, I am also like a junkie without my fix of FC.
