Sanju was a good and competent film (if someone dosen't know Sanjay Dutt at all and watches the film, he/she would still enjoy it as the film was good, it was propaganda for sure but a competent one at that) while The Accidental PM isn't good as a film (and it is also propaganda but someone who dosent know who the people are still wouldnt enjoy the film as it wasn't made well).

    • @Sayujya09
      @Sayujya09 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

@C Comm I am not saying it was not a propaganda to whitewash Sanjay Dutt's life as it clearly was. It was just a good film to watch if you ignore the fact that it is based on Sanjay Dutt. Just assume it is a pure fiction not based on Sanjay Dutt's life and it is actually a good compelling story (yes it glorified a druggie who slept with 250 girls and there were many flaws in the film even if we assume it is not Sanjay Dutt but overall it was a good film with great acting and plot).
The accidental PM on the other end is a bad film with terrible acting, caricature like characters, terrible CGI and bad pacing and even if we assume it is not about Congress and Manmohan Singh, it is a terrible film with a very weak plot.
Both were propaganda, one trying to glorify a drug addict and the other trying to demean a respected PM of India but one was just better as a film compared to the other.

    • @Sayujya09
      @Sayujya09 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@C Comm I am not asking you to. I too didn't really like the film simply due to it being about Sanjay Dutt and him being glorified and agree with everything you said. I am just trying to say that as a film Sanju was better the the accidental PM. Both are equally bad if the context is taken into account about the life of the real person in question but without that context one film is better than the other.
I was simply replying to the comment that said both were propaganda films then why one gets better treatment in terms of reviews and earning and the reason was simply that one was a better film than the other without the context.

I am appalled by the sheer hypocrisy of all 3 in the panel. Upon Sucharita getting trolled for Uri's review, Anupama says "It is just a film guys!" and on the other hand, Rahul says "Some film-makers don't even DESERVE to be out there. (For Accidental Prime-Minister)" Hey Rahul, "It is just a film man!"
Freedom of Expression/Your opinion is fine but you guys earn from it. You earn from the views you get on youtube or the hits from your website and that's what my problem is! You manipulate viewers. Luckily I had watched Uri with no pre-conceived notion, not for a single moment, I felt it be a propaganda film. Sucharita and Rahul went in with prejudice and have written and spoken about Uri accordingly. For example Sucharita felt the girl's crying scene during the funeral scene makes the audience guilty for being alive. C'mon, YOU felt that, not the rest of the AUDIENCE.

If there is any criticism about any movie, it ultimately open rooms for improvement for film makers. Sucharita's take on the War Cry scene is insane. I was in the theatre and most of us cried through that scene. You thought what you had to, but have some maturity before putting it out in the public domain. You said u take hours to prepare for what to say in a review, and if this is what you say, your preparation is not enough.
Not very happy after watching their URI review and the review of URI review, u guys are in public domain and ur views despite being personal can manipulate people's choice, Kal ko koi minister personal view hai bolke public domain me kuch bhi bolega toh sahi nhi hai naa.. The movie is not a documentary , the documentary has already been made by History TV. Go review that and then dispute on the facts if you have more details. The movie is inspired by True Events, there are cinematic liberties being taken and that's fine.

But i felt like jis context me that event happened when that girl cried for her father in real life, that got taken away by this movie. Rather than appropriating that scene for some other event like surgical strike, they could have save it for the real story itself. Her father didn't just die like that, he had his own story. Thora insensitive tha yeh appropriation. Respect the man who gave his life and the child who is now living a life without having her father next to her anymore. Tool ke tarah use mat karo, respect ke saath unki kahani ko batao

Surgical strike in itself was a matter of great pride for india. They did not have to stoop so low to use a real event which everyone knows about and use a child's real emotions just to emotionally stimulate the audience. That could have been easily avoided and still the movie would have done really well. This is insensitive because it was done with a monetary intension.

Disclaimer: I am not an Indian nor do I live in India.
However, I took one of my Indian friends to watch this movie (post surgery--you gottta get out of the house thing) and I ended up really loving the movie. It was a nicely made movie. I then looked up as much info as I could over a weekend about Uri attacks and the strikes and Indian history since '47. I honestly feel that these "reviewers" are doing disservice to a nation as diverse and complicated as India by bringing in their convenient and often time political views in everything they talk about. Why do they literally believe that the audience is dumb and cannot think for themselves? Not to mention your country has such volatile neighbors that it shouldn't need more help from its own people. We too have a debatable leadership (by the way I honestly feel that your country's current leadership is an admirable one), but to brand a movie wanting to depict recent events as jingoistic, propaganda driven, loopholes filled nonsense is quite irresponsible. We took Argo and many such movies to Oscars (which by the way take many cinematic liberties to build a narrative) and you ridicule, minimize your own because of political leanings?!? You uphold other countries' cinematical efforts but hardly your own....why?? Funny people you guys are!

Boss! Ye bakchodi kahi aur jake sunao. It is not that you can't criticize movies based on some propaganda.
      1. The problem is when you only call out only Uri and TAPM for it. If they are so-called propaganda movies, then she should have called out Mulk, Udta Punjab and Sanju for their respective propaganda as well.
      2. You should have seen the speed with which she came out with the reviews of Uri and TAPM in the morning hours of Friday. It's as if she was doing Congress service by asking people not to watch these movies at all. This was unlike her earlier that used to come much later in the day like Rajeev Masand.
      3. She is a NDTV old timer and her bias is so visibly out there now. She may be Congress-backed. Who knows?
      4. Didn't her family earn crores from Sanju? Did she protest that movie being made? Now, she is taking the high-horse by calling herself unbiased. How stupid and naive does she think people are?

I am not sucharita so won't speak for her but being an army child myself i would like to point out two things that bothered me.
      1) that cry scene was taken from a context. Somebody's father passed away while trying to do something for the nation, while trying to protect all of us from certain kind of threat. He had his own story. But by taking it all out of the context and putting it in a movie like this seemed disrespectful to the man who died and to the daughter who cried.
*Remind people about that true event and don't just use it to decorate some other story. Don't just use it to get numbers at box office. These are true emotions. I found it to be very insensitive.*
      2) and it won't take a genious to pin point that the movie was just *based on true events*. It wasn't the entire truth as in the dialogues spoken, the story of kaushal's character, the course of events. To be honest the movie makers just picked an event and formed a story around it. And there's nothing wrong with that. I mean they want the movie to work so they will dramatize it. And i can watch a documentary on URI to know the factual details. But the issue is that some idiots are taking every little thing from the movie as accurate depiction of real event. That's equally disrespectful to the people who were actually involved in the process at ground level.
That's it. I mean no disrespect towards anyone but at the same time i want people to respect our military for what it really is rather than judge it by what's shown in a movie.

    Honest feedback -
    1. Please don't review movies in the first 3 days. You people with your PERSONAL opinions, unfortunately, are affecting the decision of millions to watch or not watch a movie. All the hate that you have received and the feedback you have recently received, all three of you, especially Anupama ji and Sucharita, are not sudden bursts of anger. It was building up with your audience for quite some time and, your last review for the movie URI was for many the final nail in the coffin, considering the patriotic sentiment with the subject. If you could analyze all your own reviews, you would know how biased you people are. You don't blink an eye while ruining a movie's business with you absolute rubbish personal opinions about the movie. I would prefer to see more of honest public reviews and not your subjective opinions on a movie. I suggest, please post a review only on or after Sunday. Let the audience spread the word for a movie - good or bad. You should not influence the audience.
    2. Subjective - Yes reviews are subjective. But, when you have millions of people following you, you must become objective else you should not be in this business ruining careers, disappointing your audience and deciding the fate of movies.
    3. How did you disappoint - Many people are generally and personally upset with all of you, and I also mean some other critics who post nonsense feedback on twitter and other platforms which DIRECTLY impact any new released movie's opening business. When the audience who chooses to watch a movie you all raved praises for, is disappointed with the movie, they feel cheated by your review (which must have happened to many of your subscribers, many times). Also, in cases where you people discarded a movie for being a bore and nonsensical, whereas the audience enjoyed the movie experience, they see how biased and fake, and/or subjective your review is. That is the reason for all the negative feedback you have received.
    4. Take feedback and work on it - Only after people sent you so much negative feedback, you guys came with this defensive video in which you people are changing your stance on the review statements you made. Read the comments again and you will know that public notices everything. Many times you must have received constructive feedback too but maybe you all missed. Be objective and justify your feedback about any movie. Don't just rate it down for whatever your reasons. Millions are listening to you, and not all will agree with your feedback, but what disappoints is the way you give your feedback. If the review is given, objectively, your audience will get a chance to choose whether they want to agree or agree to disagree with you. But you people are influencing their decisions. That influence is the concern.
    Think about this.
I have unsubscribed from your channel. I don't think I would anymore like to know your personal opinions which in my personal opinion are not objective and professional, and are not in the benefit of the general audience, the movie art/craft, and the movie industry.
I am just an audience who wants to watch good movies, criticize bad ones and not waste money. But watching bad reviews or fake or personal reviews which obviously cannot be universal, are waste of time and energy.
    Peace.

Anupama and team, I think it's absolutely fine if your personal beliefs or opinions about propaganda and aversion to it negatively impacts your viewing experience of a movie. Maybe just mention that early on to make your rationale and reason for not buying into the narrative clear. It is not possible to exist completely without bias, be it political or personal, we are a product of our collective beliefs and experiences. Having said that, i would encourage Sucharita and your team to see Rajeev Masand's review of Uri for a more unbiased sensitive review of the film. This issue relating to the Indian army is a sensitive and emotional topic for the population at large, and hence being aware of this might allow for a more meaningful discourse with the audience while providing constructive criticism with respect to the film. Rajeev does an excellent job at this. Despite having several points of critique on Uri, he never trashed the film or mocked the emotions portrayed by the characters in the army.Perhaps it is the way you are sharing your thoughts that is inciting a lot of anger, such as Sucharita coming across as mocking and quite harsh in describing the deceased army man's daughter crying. Again, introspection is not a bad thing and one always has room to improve especially for Sucharita who has only been doing this for the past four years--in comparison to a veteran critic like Anupama or Rajeev. One a side note, I would encourage Film Companion to review some world cinema, constant comparisons to Hollywood movies alone comes across as limiting. Furthermore, there appears to be a tone of frequent pandering to movies made in Hollywood, glorifying or idolizing their strengths while failing to adequately highlight their weaknesses, which should not be the case for any balanced critic. Perhaps more exposure to international films from Asia or Latin America and inclusion of them in your reviews, might add more depth and diversity to your content.

Well, you can't make an Indian movie without dramatizing some of the events, else it would have fallen in Art house category & nobody would have watched it! Monetary success is also as important as critical success for any movie, else the industry wouldn't flourish. And to also address the feminist point of view that both of you always look for in a movie, URI has shown Indian woman in Armed Forces in great light as well. Yes, slight bias for Indians but we can over look some of it considering the anger in majority of us Indians against Pak terrorists.

I know this term for years and so does most other people. And last but most importantly even if she is taking an idea from a conversation she had what is wrong with that ? Isn't it THE MOST NATURAL WAY we learn most things ??? I wonder why people are so eager to spread negativity all the time. May be mostly because of less knowledge and experience

These comments are just so cringeworthy. Basically anyone who has disliked these movies is biased, paid or anti-national, even though the dislike or criticism might be purely on craft, cinematography, screenplay.
This is what we have reduced the discourse to - labeling people based on their views, opinions instead of respectfully disagreeing with them, finding flaws in their argument

Joke of the day: Anupama said that she doesn't discuss politics in public. So many white lies. Here is the truth:
    1. She called Uri jingoistic
    2. She called TAPM propaganda
    3. She never called Mulk, Udta Punjab as propaganda
    4. She called Sonu ke Titu kis Sweety misogynistic (everyone loved that movie)
    5. Her family earns crores from Sanju, a whitewash of the alleged involvement of a person with underworld and riots that killed many. She quotes 'conflict of interest', which actually means that she doesn't want to get exposed by her audience.
    6. She is an old NDTV journalist and maybe Congress-backed. This explains the back-to-back reviews of Uri & TAPM on Friday morning hours. This was unusual as her reviews usually come later in the day.
    7. Her own audience has badly exposed her hypocrisy this time. But she still has audacity to call herself unbiased.

If you are true to your profession, you will judge any movie no matter who males it with same treatment for other movies. Or was it just to save embarrassment of reviewing a whitewashed movie?
I think only patriotic movie they must have liked would be Sanju. It showed their love and obsession to white wash Sanjay Dutt. We are waiting for an another patriotic movie from this sorry lot which will be called 'Raju' for Rajkumar Hirani. We don't care if you guys get paid or not, likewise, you guys shouldn't care if the movie is made with propaganda or not, just review the story and technicalities of it. Any movie which talks about social issues like Padman, Toilet Ek Prem Katha and now a patriotic movie Uri is all propaganda.

Just watch the dedication then decide, don't come from home to tell bad about a film this is called biased in all for. 4. Whatever u do or tell movie to chalgai or chalegi.

      @Sayujya09 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      1) Even after saying it is fiction so many times, people still dont understand and start complaining as if they criticized the actual strike. The film is different from the actual strike and thus saying certain parts of the film made no sense and some were bad dosent mean they are criticising the strike but people still complained in all coments as if they criticised the strike itself.
      2) I agree films like Uri are needed and it was a good film barring some things (like the overtly patriotic themes and the revenge angle. All soldiers are patriotic and brave but no one is as overtly so as shown in the film (it is a film and they need to show it to make it feel patriotic but actually showing some realism would be better) plus in actual mission no one with such a personal connection would ever be used (as it could cloud his judgement) and definitely not an intern. While Uri was overall a great film certain things shown more realistically and with less overt patriotism (best example is Zero Dark Thirty which has patriotic undertones but is nowhere as overtly patriotic as this film and way more real (in terms of feel) and Uri being tonally more like it would have made it a lot better. The thing that people enjoyed about Raazi was that it too was patriotic but that was not overt and the enemy too was shown as a competent human (which actually alliviates the film. Showing the enemy as incompentent as shown in Uri makes the daring act that soldiers performed less impactful as the enemies were stupid. If they were shown somewhat competent, the strike would feel a lot more realistic and the strike would feel a lot more accomplishing as our soldiers despite the competnt enemies pulled it off rather than as shown in the film where they pull it of against incompetent enemies which makes it less heroic in the film.)
Sanju was propaganda for sure but it was a better film to watch unlike The accidental PM.
      3) Even if there is dedication, the actual result should be good (mainly the accidental PM, Uri was a good film) Look at Thugs of Hindustan for example.
      4) Exactly, if a film is good wo chalegi and no one would care about these reviews (URI for example) so it dosent really matter.

I am so happy to see people NOT going by these reviews and actually giving a chance to a movie like Uri. Both Anupama and Sucharita were extremely biased about this movie and I did not care to know what Rahul thought... He has some or the other problem with every Bollywood movie and I haven't understood till date if reviewing Hindi movies is his majboori or what because I do not see the passion in him for Hindi movies at all ! Yesterday I watched Uri in a packed house in Colorado and we had to wait for a day and a half to get a good seat... Not one person seemed disappointed and I did not see anybody questioning the authenticity of the story... Thankfully they watched the movie considering it a movie and gave importance to the emotion than the so called authenticity these people are whining about. All said and done, for me and a whole bunch of others in this nation, defense forces are above and beyond POLITICS. This movie did NOT promote BJP or Modi and they showed a story from an army person's POV. When people stepped out of the theater, I only heard discussions about our defense forces and not one person was going ga-ga about Modi. If you want to write a thesis on propaganda movies, pick SANJU and dissect it. For your review purposes, leave movies like these and the masala movies like Simmba because there won't come a day in the near future where you will like either of these two genres!

I really enjoy these film discussions. I hope more and more such platforms emerge which invite and provoke discussions about movies, politics, society and more.

Okay so, I also didn't like the Drone and the drone operator bit at all. And yes the narrative is flawed. I need to add one thing. This isn't ZDT, because it's not about killing Osama Bin Laden, this film is just about revenge. It's about taking revenge, both personal and professional. Here, no person, will look.down on the body of a terrorist and think if it was worth it or not. Another thing, showing the PM of a country being involved in a film doesn't make it a propaganda film. Military films where political leader(s) are shown don't automatically make them propaganda films. And driving the love for a geographical location and the people, is obviously propaganda, but what will we do without it, attacks did happen in Uri(not fiction), need people to respect this geographical piece of land.

It was annoying to see their reviews on Uri. It was a good film, I enjoyed it, bahar bani hoti aisi koi film toh pasand aa jaati inhe. See, suchairita said chhopper se kabhi gaye hi nahi, saare mission ground se hue the, does anyone know what were the initial plans? There were plans of striking the camps my air power as well which came out later, what if air raid had been compromised and these people had to take ground route, I.e ground route became a compulsion, we don't know the exact planning even now, and also agar pakistan denying wala part daal dete wouldn't it had been "haaye pakistan ko kitna evil dikha rahe hai" the thing is ma'am , if militants (usually high level nashedi of pakistan) are infiltrating and killing an army jawan who's earning the right way then I think terrorism will be considered evil that's coming from other side of border. Also sucharita saying wo scene bhi daalna chaiye tha, usse movie aur lambi nahi ho jaati, kyuki wo bhi ek problem thi. Yaar, sorry to say this wasn't your best work even suchairita she has a good way of reviewing film but she messed it up completely by saying "wo sacchi story thi (12 strong) I totally enjoyed the film , I'll give uri 4 star and their reviews 1.

Bande ne reason diya hai. Bola ki story me theek se fit hona chahiye and screen play achhe se develop karna chahiye toh propaganda bhi chalega. Akhir art hi toh hai

Guys, they are reviewing a film based on the craft. Why is everyone getting so touchy just because URI was a film on the army. Even a film on the army or religion etc can have flaws. No harm in pointing it out. What is there to troll someone or say harsh words.

Only one question was udta punjab a propaganda movie and people were fighting to get it release and it turned out to be critics fav but uri which was loved by the common people becomes a propaganda movie
Please call it a bad movie(uri) but don't call it a movie with propaganda
By d way uri was a great movie and 1 star to movie seriously
