  • Africa is home to many different mammals and when I say many I mean many.
South Africa is one of the countries in Africa with a huge variety in mammals. In total there are about 299 different mammal species in just South Africa. This off course includes the whole rodent family, but still 299 is a lot of different mammals.
I don't even want to know the number of the whole of Africa, I also couldn't find it ;) but to give an idea; Africa is home to more or less 77 different African antelope species and South Africa has less than 30 of them. While counting in my mammal book I got somewhere around 25-28. Some antelope are only seen once so I don't know if that counts. I couldn't find the exact number for South Africa, but I do know Kruger has 21 different antelope species and they don't have them all. A few antelope species you will not find in Kruger, but they are elsewhere in South Africa
Then there are the big animals: elephant, giraffe, zebra, buffalo, hippo, rhino, lion, leopard, cheetah, spotted hyena, aardwolf, brown hyena and lots of smaller predators like foxes and jackals
Also don't forget about the creatures of the night. There are many mammals we don't see during the day, but they are definitely there
I could keep writing about the monkeys, squirrels, mongooses and so on but you get the drift
Africa has a huge variety in mammals, actually a huge variety in everything: amphibians, reptiles, birds, insects, spider, just all of them
I thought it might be fun to go through my movies and see how many different species I can show you in about 3 minutes.
I think there are around 20 different mammal species in the movies. The common ones, but also some more rare species. Each and every animal has it's name written in the movie
I hope you like the movie and I think it gives you a great idea of the mammal variety you can find in South Africa
The movies with information on the bottom (time and date) are made with our camera trap. A mention sensor camera that we have on either inside the yard or at the gate facing the driveway
I have definitely seen more than 20 species myself, probably over 50 by now, but only recorded with my photo camera, not on video
