  • This 110 hectare wood-pasture has more than 40 old trees, mainly oaks, pears, hornbeams and wild apples. The largest tree on this pasture is an oak with a trunk circumference of over 600 cm, having at least 250-300 years. The forest around the wood-pasture has several ancient, culturally modified trees (coppices and pollards). Furthermore, the ancient forest-pasture border was identified, which can have around 100-150 years and has distinct tree species (black locust, pine, both introduced). This wood-pasture and the surrounding forest was included into a recent project entitled ‘SilviCultural Museum’ (silvi-cultural...) initiated by the Local Action Group ‘Dealurile Târnavelor’ and implemented in collaboration with other Local Action Groups. The SilviCultural Museum initiative builds on the recognition that within this landscape several silvicultural practices, from the very ancient sylvopastoralism till the modern forestry can be identified. The biodiversity of this wood-pasture is exceptional and characteristic for the ancient oak wood-pastures from this region of Transylvania. The Fortress of Saschiz was a Saxon fortress built in 1347 for defensive reasons as well as for food storage. The hill where it is situated is called in the Saxon dialect Burchreech (Fortress Hill).
