  • In recent years, Springfield Armory has expanded and refreshed its lineup of M1911 pistols, and one of the new product lines is the 1911 Ronin. Currently, there are seven different offerings in the Springfield Ronin family, giving users options in 9 mm Luger, .45 ACP and with full-size or shortened slides and barrels. Watch our "American Rifleman Television" Rifleman Review segment above to learn about the construction and performance of Springfield's Ronin.
The Springfield Ronins are available with full-size, 5" slides and barrels, as well as shortened 4.25" models and compact EMP models with 3" and 4" barrels. All guns are built on stainless-steel forged frames, topped by blued carbon-steel forged slides and a forged stainless-steel barrel.
"The Ronin is a subtle but sophisticated approach to the 1911," said Brian Sheetz, American Rifleman editor in chief. "It has some extra features that you don't tend to see except for on enhanced guns. It has front slide serrations, for instance. It also has a skeletonized, lengthened, blackened trigger, which contrasts nicely with the bead-blasted area of the stainless frame. It has the cross-cannon emblem laminated stocks from Springfield, half of which are plain and half of which are checkered. There are contrasting stainless-steel Torx-head grip screws, and of course, the magazines on both models are stainless steel."
All models of the Springfield Ronin are outfitted with fiber-optic front sights, which pick up daylight easily, making for a bright, easily seen front sight. At the rear is a dovetailed sight complete with a flat edge on its front face, making it possible to rack the Ronin single-handedly off a flat ledge.
"Springfield includes some other nice touches on the Ronin that don't jump out, but they make a difference, such as the tapered magazine well and the straight, checkered mainspring housing," Sheetz said. "Controls on the Ronin are pretty traditional. The serrated mag release is pretty much standard, the slide lock is pretty much standard. The safety lever is somewhat extended and enhanced, and it's only on the left side, and the hammer has got a serrated surface, and it's skeletonized as well."
Like most modern M1911s, the Springfield Ronin is outfitted with a generous beavertail grip safety, into which the hammer recesses, so it protects a shooter's strong hand from hammer bite while also allowing for a high grip on the gun for improved control. Add to that the finely checkered mainspring housing and traditional M1911 ergonomics, and the Ronin is an easy-to-shoot package that's designed for the range.
"The Ronin is just a really attractive package, and it's also a very attractive package in regard to its cost for the features that are included in the gun," Sheetz said. "Springfield knows 1911s like virtually no other maker, and I think, really, I've always told friends, I think you get just a tremendous amount of value in the quality that Springfield offers in any of its 1911s. The Ronin is, you know, almost, if you could only have one 1911, this is a really beautiful rendering of a classic, timeless gun with complete quality and complete up-to-date features. The Springfield Ronin, whether in 9 mm or .45 and whether in standard sizes or the Commander sizes, really is a nice gun at a nice value."

American guns have always been expensive in my country, but when I first laid my eyes on the ronin, I knew that I needed to get it no matter what. Haven't regretted it since.

I have a Springfield Range Officer in .45 that I have competed with and it has several thousand rounds through it with zero failures. I recently purchased the Ronin in 9mm and it already has over 1K rounds through it with zero failures as well. I really like them both. I did upgrade the trigger in the RO so it has a 3.5# trigger that is smooth as butter and it was given a skeletonized hammer to match. Also just got an Echelon and I'll be putting some rounds through that as soon as it hits my hands.

I have a Ronin in full size .45. I had the slide Cerakoted to be more corrosion resistant for outdoor use. The grip bushing screws are thin to fit the thin grip panels, but any after market grips will not fit so I had to remove the bushings and install regular size grip bushings so I could use Pachmayr Pro Diamond rubber grips for a textured, comfy grip. I also got a wicked trigger job while remaining the standard main spring of 23 pounds for reliability. It's now a dependable, accurate travel gun, truck gun, outdoor camping and hiking companion.

A Ronin in 9mm with a commander slide is a very nice pistol.

My daily carry is a Ronin 9mm, Commander-length. One failure-to-feed with the first magazineful when brand new, hollow points, two-plus years and countless rounds ago. Zero issues since.
I keep the factory mag+1, IWB, and a Wilson Combat 10-rounder as backup.
Lots of great guns out there, and I'm not downing anyone's choice, but the Ronin fits what I've wanted for decades. I may sell some stuff for the .45 and 10mm.

I think Springers are a great platform to build a 1911 on. I've built many of them, they all seem to have a common set of problems, such as safety feel like sponge in off position, chamber needs a finish reamer ran thru it, put a Wilson extractor in it. But the Ronin 45 Commander I built last year has a new problem. The Cerakote finish on the alloy frame, is way, way too thin Springfield. It's worn just about off and haven't even carried the gun much.

A great beautiful pistol. Can the front sight be swapped for a metal sight?

Not sure you'd want to change once you see the sight picture.
I have 67-year-old eyeballs, and for me the sights are amazingly good.

Interesting, no mention of the 10mm. SA must be ending the 10mm Ronin. I haven't seen one for sale for awhile. I like my 10mm Ronin, it's very accurate and you can shoot 40sw in it.

This looks like an old video before they came out with the 10mm that they re released because only the early production said Ronin Operator on the slide.

10mm & 40S&W head space on the case mouth. 10mm is .142 inch. longer than 40. That means the 40 won't be able to head-space in the chamber and will be held in place by the extractor. An extractor is meant to "extract", not hold a bullet in the chamber. Do some research.
