Great video. Straight up to the point without the “is all about me” long talk to get to the point that most videos guys do. Again, easy to understand, clean voice Andy very straight forward. Thank you.
Thank you thank you thank you. I have a 1999 vw T2c imported from Mexico. Busted up my knuckles trying to shift. I knew it was just the cable not Engaging but people were saying (your clutch is probably dead, or good luck with that” Well I guess I had some good luck! Easy fix. Again, thank you.
Just finished a 71 squareback all new..! 1st gear chattered hard when hot off and on. Forgot all about the bowden toob issue my last 66 was in high school...(: Thanks for the reminder"
68 bug Bowden tube has 1-1/4” bend has 5/8” play at clutch pedal all new clutch parts. Clutch Chatters on initial take off. But shifts great. If I loosen then it doesn’t want to go into gears smooth
Great video Chris! I used your tips on your video on sanding the fuel pump stand and that fixed my vapor lock problems! I have chatter on first gear but only AFTER driving a while. Probably has to do with engine temperature in my case. In this video, do you mean the chatter is there from the startup? If not, do you know if the issue in my case still could be the wire or could it be the transmission itself that needs fixing/changing? Thanks!
Chris. Thanks for the video. I'm sure that is what my problem is. At 2:41 it shows where the tube is connected to the body. To me is looks bent like it isn't supposed to be at that angle. Can you look and verify that the left end is supposed to look like that. Many thanks.
it seems when i adjust the flynut after setting the tube, it straightens out the tube again! ill keep trying, its a shortened buggy with the cable shortening 'kit' on it as well...luckily, being a buggy, access is better than most! im ready to put a METAL tube there to maintain the bend, but i know thats not how it all works....good vid, by the way, concise, no silly music or shaky cameras. thanks all.
hey Chris your vídeos are great!!!! I have a question for you, I have a 61 chassis that I'll try to fix some issues, like the clutch cable tube that is totally loose, it moves back and forward in the tunnel, do you know where to cut a hole on the tunnel to weld the tube again?
My 69' bug wont engage the clutch at all. This happend while driving. Stuggled to get it into reverse the day before, like the clutch wouldnt disengage enough. Replaced the clutch cable but same issue. Can slam it into first gear but nothing happends. Recon i need a new gearbox?
Hi Chris, My question is concerning the wingnut adjustment. I had way too much free play and adjusted to the proper amount... is it to be expected that in doing this my clutch as I let it out now engages the transmission at a different point than before? Thanks again for all the videos!
a half inch of free play now will the lever on the trans move at all with the free play or will it only move once the clutch pedal is pressed a half inch. do i want the line putting any tension on the trans lever wile its just sitting or only once pressed passed the half inch thank you im a bit slow here lol
Hey Chris, I have a question. In my 1965 bug, my clutch makes a noise when ever I release it. It is like a squeak and a scratch noise. I am thinking it is my clutch cable housing broke loose. Any suggestions?
Hey Chris, I have a stuck clutch pedal on my 59 bug. I took off the pedal assembly and it turned out that the pedal itself was stuck, so I took out the pin that holds the pedal in, but the pedal still won't come off! Please help
My clutch for after driving in rush hour or after about 20 mins of driving when warmed up seems to start grinding, then I end up having to keep adjusting my cable, not sure if the Bowden tube is the problem or if it's my guide tube in the tunnel, I've reinforced my guide tube because my welds broke for the first time in 50 years
Renew the transmission oil. It goes off and gets burnt out, you can get a burnt smell when you drain that oil, I change mine every 3 years approx. as it shifts smoother with clean, fresh oil, costs about 20 bucks.ep 80)90w oil.
I know this is one of your older videos but, the bowden was never seated back into the tunnel tube and would cause premature cable failure, you can see that it is this way before and after the bowden reposition , also without someone applying tension on the clutch cable when you pull up the pedal 9/10 times the cable will come off the hook, sloppy I know you guys are better than that.
+Bdubbleyou You only use the spacers if you have no bend in the bowden tube or you have chatter when coming off the clutch. And yes tighten to fix early engaging.
hey chris I just changed my Bowden tube and clutch cable. the Bowden tube was 3/4" longer than the stock one. the bend was more than an inch. is too much bend okay?
My stock 1965 bug makes a rattling noise when I release the clutch only when I am in 1st gear. I just had the clutch cable and tube replaced about a week ago. When I picked the car up from my mechanic she drove perfect. After about 4 days the rattling noise started. The whole car shook. Please advise. Thanks
Hi Chris, I just took a video. I am 56 years old and don't know much about my bug but trying to learn so I don't get screwed by the mechanics that I've been to. About 5 of them since 2008 when I moved to Phoenix from NY. Here is the video. I really didn't know what I was looking for but I think I found it th-cam.com/video/GySiMIpW-O4/w-d-xo.html
Chris Vallone I actually have the same issue. It’s real chattery and it will not release with ease. I’am in the process of rebuilding it cable and Boden tube. The question I have is what do you mean by bend on the Boden. My old was breaking right at the crimp where the cable first goes through it. Could the possibly be the cause.
I was told that the Bowden tube cannot be straight it has to have a little bend to it for what reason I have no idea but that's what I was told by Volkswagen people in message boards the samba.com message boards
@@classicvwbugs u saved me i thought i needed a new clutch . Guy that sold it to me had it super tight the bolt broke that held the cable, replaced now i set it like you said . Thank you
Hi Chris - 2 comments My car judders with new clutch fitted - is this the cure - we did use an alignment tool so maybe this is the reason although it seems hard to understand why this makes a difference? Also just to say did you fit a seal at the end of Bowden tube - WolfWest part 111721365 - seems many forget to fit this seal!? All the best Chris

Exactly what I needed to understand my chatter in first gear. Thank you!! Great video

This was so helpful. Just curious if this could help with a clutch that is kinda tight getting into gear once in awhile

For sure, the clutch will engage at a much higher pedal.
Chris Vallone awesome, that's what I was hoping you’d say! :) Thanks again!
Question when instqlling the cable do i tighten the other end where it connects to the pedal? Or leave alil snug play?
There really is no tightening at the pedal, it just hooks on.
Sehr gut Chris! Danke
Did you ever have the bracket holding the clutch cable tube break inside the center frame?
Do all years have the Bowden tube? I don’t think I have one? 1972 standard

now i know what to do if my bug starts to jump a little on first,
i have a lot of free play on my shifter, how can i tighten it up ?
I put in a new shift rod bushing and it feels way tighter than before.
So then what are the consequences of having no free play in the clutch pedal?
Usually then it is too tight and then the clutch will not engage. Car will sit, not move.
My clutch engages too early. Can I just turn the wing nut once or twice to fix it? Or are the spacers absolutely necessary?
+Bdubbleyou You only use the spacers if you have no bend in the bowden tube or you have chatter when coming off the clutch. And yes tighten to fix early engaging.

broken return spring and or gummed up fork/lever assembly, try lubing it *just suggestions*
my clutch had flopped forward when i was driving. i've already tighten it. Do i place in a new clutch cable or add spacers on the old one? thank you.
Probably the cable end came off the hook at the pedal assembly, cable probably was damaged and wore through the wire strands unravel then break.
Thanks Chris!
Cable might be stuck. Find a vw place by you and have them look at it cause you cant access it without cutting stuff
