I’m a pre Signals Rush fan myself. I don’t like the way they started favoring keyboards and synths over Alex’s guitar work (I’ve heard that Alex didn’t like it either). I always placed their first two live albums (All The World’s a Stage & Exit Stage Left) over all the others.

YYZ is the IATA airport code of Toronto Pearson Int'l Airport (the main airport in Rush's hometown). The main rhythm & riff are based on the Morse code for YYZ. The story behind the song is that the band was introduced to the rhythm when Alex Lifeson flew them into the airport in his plane.

There's a lovely story regarding Rush and Jimmy Page and Robert Plant. When Page & Plant were touring together in the 90's, Rush had come to a grinding halt. Neil Peart had lost his 19 Yr old daughter in a car crash, and Geddy Lee said it was all like losing a daughter.
Page &,Plant were doing a concert in Toronto & Geddy suddenly got a personal call from Robert Plant and as a Led Zepp fan thought it was a wind up.
He went on to invite Rush to the show and a chat.
Geddy & Alex went, and after the concert, Robert talked about when lost his son in '77 and the realisation for the need to carry on with life even though you're still grieving for your child.
They soon got the band back together, and Geddy spoke of much Page & Plant were proper gentlemen.
I personally think it was a great gesture from Robert Plant to try and help fellow musicians to come to terms with their grief and not let it destroy the band.

Neil was famous for his usage of running over the bar line; you could almost say it was his trademark. As to the provenance of the song, this was entirely based upon Alex Lifeson's interminable (nocte) nightmares; it is a full exploration of the way an individual runs with a dream sequence, hence the staccato breaks - then rushing on (sorry for the pun) to the next segment of the dream-enacted. Apart from the virtuosity involved from all three guys, this was like a monumental (& frenetic) jam session; it's why I took up, bass, drums & guitar - & whilst not alone in the impressario's world of music, became a huge influence on my playing...Like many a RUSH devotee, I miss 'The Professor' profoundly....Good call !!

Hi Andrew. Love you explorations of classic music and drums, especially John Bonham and Neil Peart. Have you considered 'Freewill' from 'Permanent Waves'? The mid section is particularly extraordinary - all of them off the scale in invention and 'trading' as you say. Would love to see/hear your thoughts. In any case, really enjoy your channel. 👍

For the most part the song just switches between two chords: B and C. Even the intro (where the rhythm is the Morse code for YYZ) alternates between F# (which is the third of BMajor) and C so you could say that the intro is still just alternating between B and C. The keyboard interlude and the synchronous runs are obviously different.
The guitar solo is in e harmonic minor and, again, played over the CMajor and Bmajor chords of that scale. The Middle Eastern flair is designed to evoke the exoticness of world travel.
YYZ (or Zed as they say in Canada) is the airport code for Pearson Internation Airport in Toronto and Neil has been quoted as "It's always a happy day when they see YYZ on their luggage tags". For some reason all (most?) Canadian airports start with a Y.
If you listen to the isolated drum or bass tracks you can hear that the solos are overdubbed and, especially the bass, have a completely different tone from the track.
Finally, Geddy and Alex recently played this song at both the London and L.A. Taylor Hawkins tribute concerts. In London, Omar Hakim played the drums, and his take was quite a bit different from Neils. In L.A., Danny Carey from Tool was the drummer, but he played it pretty straight. Nice to hear those two monster drummers do their interpretations and SO NICE to see Alex and Geddy play on stage again.

Hello, I am a bass player but as I sometimes joke about being a "closeted drummer"... I have been watching your videos for 5-6 months, maybe longer anyway... I have a drumming question, How do you deal with "dotted" notes? Is it the same way I presume but often times a dotted eighth is within the sustain of the last note and drum transients are not often long enough to allow for a muted beat... Am I asking this properly? I'm just curious. Thank You!

  • @Mike80528

Oddly enough, YYZ was originally composed as a call and answer between Geddy and Neil. Alex wasn't part of it until later on, and his insertion of the eastern time really made for a unique sound at the time of release...and it still is in many ways.
Also, I don't know how I missed this video, but there's a great clip of Neil putting the 30th anniversary DrummerWorld kit through its paces for "Anatomy of a Drum Solo": th-cam.com/video/Oz-fthxn_eY/w-d-xo.html

Krieger: "First of all, it's YY-zed. And second of all, no I can't get it, it's impossible."
    Neil Peart stands alone.
Also the snap/crash sound in the guitar solo is "plywood". It's literally listed as one of Neil's instruments on the album notes. To quote him:

Andrew, I second the recommendation from somebody here in the comments to check out the "Exit... Stage Left" version of YYZ. This is an early live album from Rush, I think from the Moving Pictures tour, and Neil takes an amazing solo on YYZ. *CAUTION* Use the version from the album. If you see a TH-cam video taken from the "Exit... Stage Left" concert film, *don't* use that one. For reasons unknown, YYZ is really butchered up on that film.

The thing about it is, it predates the time when Neil added the secondary digital kit. So, I sort of feel more like the solo is more of a "drum" solo than what it evolved into later. Just 3 solid minutes of amazing acoustic kit playing. It's also always good to just stand back and be amazed that *three guys* could pull off something like that live.

Hey. Andrew! Since you wondered to yourself about improvisation and whether the band wrote in a nearly fleshed out fashion, here’s a link to a live (bootleg) recording of Tom Sawyer, prior to its actual recording. If I remember, this show is mere weeks before Rush entered the studio to record Moving Pictures. You’ll see that while there is general structure and most of the main ideas are here, work continued and there was significant refinement and solidification of what was to be the final version. Quality is not great, but certainly enough to get the gist. This version is faster and even more chaotic in the solo section. They’re all shredding for the sake of shredding because the parts have not been honed into their final form. Enjoy! th-cam.com/video/ZNlN1awfnX8/w-d-xo.html
