I have been to NOLA many times and sometimes you can peek through the doors or they are slightly open and you see the fabulous gardens, patios and party time...beautiful!
I stayed at the Fairmont Hotel, back in the 90's and went to the Iconic bowling alley, heard kick ass 🎶 music, and the termites. I still have pictures of balconies with flowers .
I got such a kick out of this. I’m from San Juan, lived in and around old San Juan half my life, and when I visited New Orleans it felt a lot like home. The flat roof thing was particularly interesting to me. In old San Juan that’s the standard, but it’s so impractical because we get a lot of rain as well. During a history class, I learned that it was the standard to have a pitched roof for the first half of the *18th century here, then transitioned to mostly flat due to the threat of fires. So that’s another thing our cities have in common.

I was in New Orleans on a business trip in the very late 1990s. I hit the French Quarter, saw the private gardens through the gates, and was educated a bit mire on the shotguns. I stayed at a bed and breakfast on Royal Street, east of Elysian Fields. A kind homeowner described their shotgun as a fusion of American(Victorian embellishments), Spanish (wrought iron), and African (the home design itself).

I came across your video while attempting to research on an ancestor. He was an architect in Napoleon's Army serving in New Orleans right b4 the purchase. He elected to stay in America. Apparently he was an architect of some note. I can not find anything on him. His name was Pierre Benjamin Boussate, not 100% sure on the spelling of the name. Any info you may be able to provide?
@@nevar23 seems too young, but maybe. My dad has a book where he is mentioned. He I'd looking for it. I remember my grandmother showing me the book as a kid.
@@dbcichetti The name seemed familiar to me but I couldn't put my finger on it, so I searched the name plus Metairie Cemetery, and came up with that. I've done a fair amount of reading about New Orleans cemeteries, so his design of Lafayette Cemetery is probably where I originally saw the name (instead of Metairie). Anyway, as a genealogy buff myself I thought I'd share. Hope it leads to something! :)
@@nevar23 my grandmother was born there. I believe the Buisson relation is on her mother's side. He was either her grandfather or great grandfather. She was raised on Dauphine street and had the most unique accent I've ever heard. It is described hilariously in A Confederacy of Dunces.

Love this new video! I've been waiting for one on just the architecture, thank you! I know y'all like feedback so here's my two cents: Not really liking the new background music you added. Part of why your videos are so cool is that you feel like you're there walking around. The background music takes away from that and just feels like another canned production. I'd rather hear the street sounds like all your other videos. The other thing I hope you will start to do is tell us the street you're on when talking about specific buildings. I'm always trying to look at landmarks and figure out what intersection he's on so I know where to go next time I visit. Or just pan up and show the street sign as you walk around. Just my two cents... As always, I love what you all are doing and I'm always telling people to check out your channel. Keep up the great work!

I've heard that the land beneath the old buildings is so saturated with water that they are sinking, sometimes only on one side, leading to cracks in walls and doors and windows that don't open and shut the way they should. Is this true and how prevalent is that/

Hi I dated Cajun and his father’s side, great grand parents were Spanish, on the Spanish flat roofs my friend’s parents had paintings of lovely planks that were laid between the roofs for visiting. My friend’s Dad that they would gently lead ladies across to visit the neighbors.

It’s important to make a note here since the term Creole is used frequently in this video. Many people across the US, the world and even many in Louisiana do not know what Creole truly means in Louisiana. Louisiana Creole = the local, Louisiana-born people of colonial Louisiana descent (of any race except Native American) and their culture, architecture and cuisine. I myself am a white New Orleans Creole and I think making a clear note of what Creole is in Louisiana will clear up any confusion because it’s a term loaded with confusion for many that do not know it’s correct meaning.
@@FreeToursbyFootHQ Absolutely. It was a great video and I enjoyed it. It always feels like looking into a family photo album to me when I see the old houses and buildings in the Vieux Carré and other areas of the city.
New Orleans impressed me with how dirty it is. Dirt and litter and trash on every street and sidewalk. You can barely walk over the uneven, deteriorating walks.

I am curious as to if you will be offering a foot tour when the legendary Big Boy Locomotive is on display In Audubon later in August ? My wife is definitely going to see her favorite steam locomotive and ride on it while it is this close to our area .She is traveling on another legend of the rails to get there The Sunset Limited. She plans to spend a couple of days traveling around New Orleans afterward .This is one train you really need to check out as a tour .
Hey Kenneth, thanks for the comment!
I just checked and it looks like we will be offering several tours around that time. For more information or to sign up ahead of time, make sure to check our post covering New Orleans walking tours: freetoursbyfoot.com/new-orleans-tours/

Yet again another great upload thank you !!! 😊 can't wait to visit
Thanks for this video. Taking a walk through the older parts of town and appreciating the different architecture was one of my plans when I visited earlier this month. Since things didn’t go quite as planned, it’s still on my list for the next visit. Now I’ll understand a bit more about what I’m looking at!
You are welcome. We plan a few more architecture-focused videos in the near to midterm timeframe. Stay tuned.
And thank you for subscribing! If you know of anyone else who might also enjoy these videos, please share us with them. We would really appreciate that! Thank you.

Local here, I stay in a shotgun in the Treme area. A lot of them get modified tho all into one..just tearing down the wall inside that separates the 2 & recreating the floor plan to be all one home.

Very welcome.
Thanks for the tour - that was really interesting to see the architecture as it is so different to what is the norm over here :)
I’m from New Orleans and my ancestors have been here in the city since colonial times so when I walk through the Vieux Carré and look at all the architecture I’m walking through my family album.

I love the video with it's plethora of information. Not so much the upspeak. Makes it sound amateur.
Glad you liked the video. We've been threatening to send Andrew off to England to add some downward inflection in his voice.

Could the last name be Buisson? Found this: www.findagrave.com/memorial/16735099/pierre-benjamin-buisson

Do they do courtyard tours at all?
There are a few. Try insidersfrenchquarter.com/
We do visit some courtyards on our French Quarter walking tours.
My family is from here I'm from t j e Grima family of LA. 😊
Can you go into any of the buildings? any mansions to tour?

I've heard that the land beneath the old buildings is so saturated with water that they are sinking, sometimes only on one side, leading to cracks in walls and doors and windows that don't open and shut the way they should. Is this true and how prevalent is that/
Oh , where's that pseudo lighthouse you showed at the beginning of the clip...that so out of place but I found it intriguing 🕵️
It’s the former home of an org called Lighthouse for the Blind, now an event venue. www.google.com/maps/place/Lighthouse+for+the+Blind/@29.9158991,-90.1232507,15z/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x0:0xb77103a48b4ea9b3?sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjuyvfYnYTyAhWC7aQKHRRXDEQQ_BIwCnoECD0QBQ

Yes I love to see NOLA houses
Have you watched our Creole Cottage video? th-cam.com/video/rQGPiqlSHl0/w-d-xo.html
Hi I dated Cajun and his father’s side, great grand parents were Spanish, on the Spanish flat roofs my friend’s parents had paintings of lovely planks that were laid between the roofs for visiting. My friend’s Dad that they would gently lead ladies across to visit the neighbors.

If we love shothun homes so much why don't we build them as new homes now? They're very practical.
Make mine a double. ;)
Thanks again for watching our video and providing such a nice insights about the term Creole.
@@FreeToursbyFootHQ Absolutely. It was a great video and I enjoyed it. It always feels like looking into a family photo album to me when I see the old houses and buildings in the Vieux Carré and other areas of the city.
They have French homes in Puerto Plata Dominican Republic
Looks like St. Dennis 😂
New Orleans impressed me with how dirty it is. Dirt and litter and trash on every street and sidewalk. You can barely walk over the uneven, deteriorating walks.
The music is not needed. It takes away from what you are teaching!! Your videos are great except the ones that have music or too loud music.
Sorry about that Elissa!
If you would have told someone living in a fq shotgun house what it would be worth today, they would die from shock
Belieavable.
