I am not ther best mechanic but I like to repair things.... I have to admit though at 63 years now I like watching 2vintage repair stuff even more.
I am no mechanic, hate fixing things unless they are made of wood. I am nearly 71 and I like watching 2Vintage repair stuff even more. Though I do fast forward through the bolt un-doing as I've got less life remaining than you. My hobby: driving around a local industrial museum in 100 year old vehicles whose the cogs are each about the size of a Yamaha engine and have to be slipped into each other. Even if they don't I explain to passengers there was a gear there last time I tried to change to it.

That's the absolute worst piston disintegration I've ever seen. LOL Quite impressive that it didn't take the case with it. Like, how? HAHAHA
The worst piston carnage I've ever seen. Good grief. You are a brave young man for tacking that job. And on a utv no less. You sir deserve all my respect.
I just experienced the same issue with the kickstart mechanism. Previous owners let the kickstart lever slam back thus causing the stopper to slip on the shaft. This causes the return spring to no longer be orientated correctly to the stopper. I pressed the stopper off and relocated it correctly then welded it back on. It was also necessary to remove excess weld so that the unit would sit flush in the case. There is a TH-cam video showing how its done.
It's unbelievable how the gears, or bearings in that cub cadet engine aren't torn apart or at least scored badly. Never seen such a thing, almost like someone split the case, and threw in a handful of debris, and bolted it back together wow.
Iv'e shattered many lawn mower engines at some high rpm and never seen so much laying in the case that's crazy!
I admire your ability to keep everything straight. All the new parts & what build they need to go on.
I absolutely loved watching this video. As a child in the 70's, I learned how to ride on a 1975 RM80. This video brought back some long forgotten memories. Thanks for all you do, Joe.

Gotta hand it to you, you're balls deep in both of those machines, the Cub is gonna be tough to put back together, ( can you completely reassemble it on the bench ) and still be able to get it in the frame, how that much damage was done and not destroy the case is beyond me, how could someone crank it that long and not know it was broken inside
With that amount of damage, you know it made one hell of a noise when it stopped running.
What a difference new graphics and a front plate make. Bike looks soooo much better. Can’t wait to see it running bro. 💯🤙🏻
Will wonders never cease. 😂 Guessing we will look into that oil pump in more detail when our guy starts putting things back in order.

2 things here Joe. 1. You need to work on heli-arc welding. 2. Get a flat stone. Use crocus cloth to smooth your head & or cylinder flat on the stone with the crocus cloth. Thus saving all the money for the cylinder. Maybe the bore was messed up so your method would be better. I am just thinking of using your components making them perfect. A pinhole and uneven head surface, or cylinder to head not flat problem could save you money and be as good as any new used components.
Suggestions for flat stone?

I also use a surface place with a piece of sandpaper taped to it.
I only got a glimpse of the leak but shouldn't fresh O-rings properly torqued not leaked on the outside? Seen a few things in over sixty years but never had that problem even with slight damage on the outside of the O-rings. But I know I'm wrong....

Somebody was fibbing a bit as to what really happened to that cub cadet, it didn’t just go from putzing across the yard to……total destruction. I would have loved to see how it all went down. You might have a hard time finding parts for that thing, maybe not though I hope not for your sake! 👍
hey loving the videos one thing I do truly admire about you is that you always see a project through to the end even if you have to take a part something 2-3 times to get it right. as someone who can get easily frustrated and leave stuff half finished lol I need to learn a thing or 2 from you

Darn Joe when you're puling the case apart on the Cub Cadet, it reminds me of the olden days when we used to put actual coins into slot machines and if you hit one and it didn't have a lot of quarters in, it would slowly drop out like 3 or 4 or 10 quarters at a time but you'd be waiting for them to drop.. that's the chunks of metal dropping out of that case as you open it.. haha nice work!! Sucks about the power valves being different, but you know that's just how things go a couple years later and there's always some kind of change that matters.

I'm struggling to do a full fluid service on my new to me 2019 650 Outlander with 2800 km's on it, I'm an old school diesel mechanic so most of my knowledge and experience is useless as they are so complex with working acerage to suit the arms and hands of a two year old, then I stumbled on to your segments and this, man if you want a holiday in Aussie, pack your tools and I'll pick you up at the airport 😂😂😂 you can service my outlander, in 50 years of working on everything from 4x4 pick ups to tractors and excavators, I have never seen anything like this Cub Cadet blown piston how it didn't bust up the case is a miracle since I have seen pistons come through the side of cast blocks! Great work mate, got me hooked now and will be binge watching your segments just to catch up👌

Wow again on the Cub Cadet.. There is no way a piston can self implode and nothing else get damaged other than the valves and head. crazy.. thanks for letting me hang out in your shop today. great vid.

Just still trying to grasp ahold of how that piston wound up in the bottom in the crankcase on the cub cadet. Another awesome video, Joe. The yz is coming along nicely. Cant wait for the first start-up for both of these projects.
Likely overheated causing piston rings to bind in the cylinder. Rod yanking down on the stuck piston can snap it quite easy, especially if it happened at a running RPM

that cub cadet rod bearing is toast, look at the heat markings on the crank. 46:03 pause

I questioned the same thing when I saw it but I'm no mechanic.
I see what you're looking at but it looks like oil to me..if you look at the 45:20 mark you can see oil.Then he runs his gloved finger around it looking more like heat rings. IMHO.
I agree 100% on that. Looks like someone put the peddle to the floor and held it there. But still I have never seen a piston blow in that many pieces. Unless the belt braking had something to do with the counter weights chewing the piston up.
I have watched some guys rebuild Rotax engines. When they change the bearings they have to press the shaft out. When they put it back together they have to apply heat around the hole area so the pin can be reinstalled. I don’t think they changed the color though. It’s been a while.
That cub cadet must of been revved to the moon when she let go

I always like to clean equipment down prior to working on it to try and minimise getting the internals contaminated, however in your case it was probably irrelevant. Interesting video all the same, thank you for posting.

If the case halves are not damaged, all the bearings need to be removed (and replaced), and the case halves need to be hot-tanked to ensure the metal bits are not hiding in the oil passages. Will Joe bother to do that? I can already predict it "No", but in good conscious, I have to at least mention it. Otherwise, that rebuilt engine will have a short life before it grenades again.
That big end rod bearing should also be replaced, as evidenced by the bluing - it saw some pretty high thermals, so the crank assembly should be checked and rebuilt.
@aeroman5239 Exactly what I was thinking. He is saying those bearings feel good... I'm like please God no don't reuse that bearings. That's just asking for disaster. And all those hours of work just to cheap out.
I mean the piston exploded into a million tiny metal pieces and you think the bearings will be alright!?

The Co. that made/makes Pro X was and still may be the original Manufacture of OEM Yamaha pistons. Ran across them back when I was restoring my RD 400 A lond time ago. lol

Nice job. I would install the wrist pin on the Cadet and eyeball the rod closely to make sure the rod is not bent.
You never buy an after market gasket kit . They are junk . I learned that on my yfz450 . I had to buy the oem gasket to fit correctly. FYI

Bud i made a carrer in the Marines for 25 years seen everything from desert Storm, operration restore hope, three times to Iraq then three times to Afghanistan been injured a few times i still to this day carry some metal in my body and have it rejoiced when it starts bothering me. I think the size of that pile of shrapnel is just about the same amount i have collected over the years lol. That's a big project keep it going.

As for the Cub, that is unacceptable! Unless it was owner not checking fluids and it had no coolant or oil! 200 hours is barely broken in! It almost looks like the wristpin slid out or it was just ran with little oil and/or coolant. The case not being damaged is amazing! I Had a 72 Kawasaki 350 enduro explode the piston like that and it ruined EVERYTHING! It was overheated by a friend and I was told it happened once before. Even a used engine would still put you ahead as nice as what that machine is, good luck!
I’d put all those pieces in a clear glass jar with a label of what it is just for a memento.

Im thinking high octane fuel was the start of this failure and then they just kept running it till it blew.Just my 2 cents.Very relaxing watching this young man work
Do you mean low octane? Pump gas burns hotter and detonates more than race gas.
43:28 When you took the four-pin cam housing out of the oil pump you put it backwards into the casing cover that came off of it. I don't know if the orientation mattered though.

Do yourself a favour and spend the extra pennies on new circlips for the small end/gudgeon pin, you spent far too much to allow yourself to risk wrecking that top end by cutting corners !!

Great talent to have, any kind of a mechanic are getting harder to find, especially a competent and honest one as yourself, have you had any job offers from anyone seeing your videos? I know your probably not interested, but i was jus curious. Im sure your doing fine with what your doing in your own shop

Man power valves are the sneakiest expense with some of these bikes. I’ve had that a couple of times but have been able to get new ones for where they’ve been discontinued on KDXs and KXs

Hi, there is a guy on TH-cam who fixes hand drills etc & he uses medicale suranges to keep the oil & greese in so that it is easier to apply. You could find that helps insted of that long tube I saw you use.

Joe you got lucky with that engine. A good cleaning and a couple bearings you'll be good to go. To bad out of that you don't know what brand of piston that was in there so you can find something bulletproof. That lowers definitely bulletproof. To bad they didn't design that upper with better parts...
then need a complete engine base eurkkkk. in 20 years I saw this 1time it was the timing chain which had broken and destroyed everything internally. it was on a RM 480 84 .you're lucky you have a lot of recoverable parts. good repair :-)
When taken the power valveactuator nut off. You should put a screwdriver underneath it. A lot of people break or bend this actuator arm.
Because I had a problem with my 1991 yz250 power valve they wanted $500 for one and I got a different year and machined it down and it works great
Wow that yamaha is gonna be really nice Joe. The graphics kit and the pipe made it. Did it have a proper muffler or was it stock? Id definitely have a muffler to match that sweet pipe man...

I did a quick ebay search and there are lots of cylinders for a 2001 yz125. By the time you buy a used 98 cylinder and pipe and power valve you could have just bought a new Athena cylinder

That con rod on that crank shaft you took out of that smashed engine looks twisted,even though the bearing feels fine.. check it's truly inline with the wrist pin in before assembling..Ian..UK..

That engine from the Cub Cadet, after watching it I thought I was watching Eric from "I Do Cars" tearing down one of his engines.
Please please please do the cadet true justice and do a complete power wash to the cases and the engine bay on it but great job so far and boy what luck on the cases not being destroyed
The only thing I've heard bad about this Era of bikes is the valves. They were still figuring things out in this time period. Around 07 all the manufacturers solved the valve problem. Just put a set of stainless valves in these bikes and your set. The rest of these are sweet.
I have a 1998 yz 125 head sitting around with the whole power valve assembly in it if you still need it, the cylinder itself isn’t good the piston scratched it up I went with a Athena top end when I rebuilt the bike a few years ago
You may want to get marine Tex and keep it on hand you can fix damage like this it is good for high tempitures and you can even drill and tap it
I would almost say that piston disintegration was from a cast piston that was not heat treated properly. There is no other way a piston would shatter like that. I don't know who makes the engine but some subcontractor piston supplier cut some corners.
