  • This video was shot by my friend Paul, who many of you have seen videos by in the past at this point. Paul was a big train buff in the 80s, and has sent me some videos to post on my channel. In this video, we see a pair of NJ Transit trains swapping power - one gaining a diesel in the form of an F40PH, and one gaining an electric in the form of a patched E60.

This had to be near the end of this operation…not long after this they extended electric service to Long Branch with the diesel shuttle to Bay Head (similar to how the line mostly runs even now). Awesome footage.

Wow 5 minutes to swap it. Today NJT got the ALP45 and ALP45-As so much easier

Interesting at the end of the video to see the E60 pushing. Technically though they couldn’t run in passenger service as that due to the variant of shifting when accelerating and did not have the proper type of train line that could let it do so. The engineer had to be in the engine while the conductor was at the Comet Cab Control Car at the other end. This all changed when the ALP44 was acquired in 1990.

2 years later after this video NJT's E60's were yanked from service and permanently parked on a deadline at dover with the last one idled by spring 1991 NEVER to run again and not officially retired until 1998

The Comet IB is a silverliner or Pioneer III or an Arrow 1, probably. It just turned into a cabcar instead of a commuter rail train now
