En 2021, el Festival de Jazz de Barcelona me dedicó el retrato de artista y tuve 5 conciertos. Para uno de ellos se me ocurrió la idea de juntar a todos los músicos con los que había grabado un CD de la colección de los “presentas”. Eran 15 músicos y casi podía formar una big band: Andrea Motis, Eva Fernández, Magalí Datzira, Rita Payés, Marc Martín, Joan Mar Sauqué, Èlia Bastida, Joan Codina, Alba Armengou, Carla Motis, Joana Casanova, Jan Domènech, Marçal Perramon, Joan Martí y Alba Esteban.
Cada músico de los presentados escogió un tema.

[ Español ] Fantásticas estas grabaciones de la Sant Andreu Big Band, formación tan maravillosa como efímera, surgida al rebufo del concierto del 15º aniversario y que era el sueño de muchos fans de la SAJB: ver a todas las estrellas legendarias de la banda reunidas en el mismo escenario. Y grabando un disco que hay que atesorar como oro en paño.
En este caso la protagonista es Alba Armengou, para mi junto a Andrea Motis y Rita Payés el trío mágico de super figuras formadas en la fábrica de genios del maestro Chamorro. Las auténticas elegidas por los dioses, un pequeño escalón por encima de todo el resto del "Joan Chamorro presenta". Alba tiene 22 años recién cumplidos y lleva dos tercios de su vida encima de los escenarios, desde que a los 8 añitos debutó con la SAJB. A los 10 ya era toda una estrella (aquel solo de trompeta en el Palau, con Jesse Davis mirándola estupefacto y 2.000 personas aplaudiendo entusiasmadas ...). Y hasta el año pasado estuvo en la banda, 14 años, que se dice pronto. Ahora vuela sola, tiene sus propios grupos y graba discos con preciosas composiciones de su cosecha. Lleva camino de ser una figura mundial. Como lo es Andrea y muy pronto lo será Rita.
Polifacética todoterreno, ya se atreve con cualquier cosa y todo lo hace bien, con voz, talento y buen gusto. Pero a mi siempre me ha entusiasmado sobre todo como vocalista de Bossa Nova, género por el que siempre he sentido autentica pasión. He escuchado y sigo escuchando a decenas de vocalistas, todas las grandes brasileñas y muchas de fuera, europeas, americanas, alguna oceánica. Y Alba es de todas ellas la mejor vocalista no nacida en Brasil que he oído nunca. Por estilo, sentimiento y pronunciación. Si hubiera nacido y se hubiera criado allí estaría ya entre las mejores de la historia, con Nara Leao, Elis Regina, María Creuza, Gal Costa, Maria Bethania, Miucha Buarque ... Pero nació en Barcelona y nunca ha estado en Brasil. Increíble.
[ English ] These recordings of the Sant Andreu Big Band are fantastic, a formation as wonderful as it is ephemeral, which emerged in the wake of the 15th anniversary concert and which was the dream of many SAJB fans: to see all the legendary stars of the band reunited on the same stage. And recording an album that must be treasured like gold on cloth.
In this case the protagonist is Alba Armengou, for me, together with Andrea Motis and Rita Payés, the magical trio of super figures formed in the genius factory of the master Chamorro. The authentic ones chosen by the gods, a small step above all the rest of the "Joan Chamorro presents". Alba is 22 years old and she has spent two thirds of her life on stage, since she debuted with the SAJB at the age of 8. At 10 she was already a star (that trumpet solo at the Palau, with Jesse Davis looking at her in amazement and 2,000 people applauding enthusiastically...). And until last year she was in the band, 14 years, which is said soon. She now flies alone, she has her own groups and records her own beautiful compositions. Another fantastic performance by that great Brazilian, Alba Armengou.... wait, she's not Brazilian? Really? Seriously, she knocks the ball out of the park on songs from Brazil (and most other places, as well). I also loved Rita's solo, and I thought the Carla/Magali/Arnau rhythm section did a great job on this.
Me encanta como maneja Alba su voz, te acerca; te aleja; te abraza; te empuja; te susurra... cada vez tiene más dominio. Impresionantes también los solos, especialmente el de Rita.... todo suena perfectamente encajado, mucho trabajo hay ahí detrás. Gracias por el vídeo, Maestro.

When Alba starts to sing it sets me in a special mood, even if I dont understand a single word. It is enough with her voice and the rythm of this wonderful orchestra. Then she starts to play the trumpet and it gets even better, together with solists Marcal and Rita. It is a sort of swinging jazz that has a lot of samba in it. I like it a lot! Congrats to the whole band and to Joan Chamorro!
Sometimes I will pull up a translation of the text in English and read along. It works!
