- I recently did a video about my plans for #ETCGDadsTruck. As expected, I saw a number of comments suggesting I put an LS in the truck. I got the same recommendation for the Fairmont.
I will admit that the LS engine is arguably one of the best engine platforms ever. However, it’s become so common it doesn’t seem special anymore. At least to me.
What do you think?

A 350 engine is solid as a rock and you've already gone one in there. Go for it. Everyone will have an opinion but it's your truck. Looking forward to seeing what you do. Stay Dirty.

Agreed. A good cam, top end kit, exhaust amd switch it to a good carb setup. Make 350+ hp all day long. Hell, make it a 383 stroker and do the top end build. It wont need boost. Its a light truck. With a turbo 400 and a good rear end. It will be quick, reliable, and fun to drive.
Some people just feel like every build needs 700 hp. 400 is plenty.
tslater1989 or you could drop an ls crate motor in it with the same stock cam as in a bone stock 2000 silverado, slap some headers and a decent 600cfm double pumper (or better yet, a junkyard efi and ecu) and make the same 350+ but at the wheels instead of at the flywheel. Not to mention you could get the typical 300,000 out of the ls...where with the cammed & stroked sb you’re gonna be lucky to get 85,000.
And why in tf would he stick an antiquated 3 speed into a truck that came with either a 5 speed or a 700r4 ?
@@ROTAXD chill out. Hes looking to go old school cool. The turbo 400 is known for being cheap to build and handle good amount of power. Its simple, and functions quite well in an application like this. Yes the 700r4/4l60e can be built to handle power. But they are more expensive to build, and if you know anything about them, the sunshell is know for cracking in high stall/high heat applications. The 350, he wants to build not replace. I was simply making suggestions. If I had that truck and a huge budget. It would get the lsx 454 or LSA. But he has stated already he has every intention of keeping the 350. A good street/strip build on that 350 will keep him smiling for a while. If he gets bored of it. Then he can look into LS swaps.

I am an LS fan, there is no shame in it. It's small, lite and packs one hell of a punch. It's great for Beetle and Miata swaps where space is a factor. And the LS R platform is one of the meanest engines on the market. That being said it's an aluminum block with steel sleeves, so internal modifications are slightly limited. The 350 small block on the other hand is an incredibly versatile engine that can be modified to hell and back without missing a beat. And while it's base model pales in comparison to an LS, it really is a great little engine that just about anyone can work on and modify. Where an LS engine is digital, a 350 is analog, which makes it an "everyman" engine. There is nothing wrong with a 350, where a little goes a long way. It's a great engine and I applaud you Eric for sticking to your guns and keeping it for the truck. Besides, all the new Chevys have LS engines in them and it just looks weird. A 350 looks more at home under the hood.
As an old school guy with grey hair for close to 20 years now, I love the 383 Stroker option.

And you can get a 383 stroker kit for the LS too!
@@ROTAXD it depends how you build it mate, a 383 with a good cam with compression and heads will run around any stock LS motor all day long. A good running 383 should make 450-500 hp no problems
@@ROTAXD If you have to ask, then you just don't get it. It's the same reason people still love Flathead Ford V8 hotrods. Sometimes sound is more important than 1/4 mile numbers.

I have an old chevy PU with a 350 with no brain and it has never left me walking. I will be watching the videos of your fun project. Who knows I might learn something.
Idk why I'm telling you this but I'm a 18 with a 1988 Chevy k1500...the frame started to crack and the engine pretty much lost compression in the 1st cylinder and 3rd. I bought a 1990 Chevy k1500 and am removing the body off the frame and undercoating it, rebuilding the engine and putting in it, all in my senior year in HS...just wanted to say this is an inspiration, thank you. P.s. its also a sbc 350 :b

I owned a '77 Cutlass with a 350-R, Rochester M4M carburetor, TH-350 trans.
I completely renewed the engine, except for cam & crank.
It was a feces brown, rusted out sleeper.
The Oldsmobile 350-R (Rocket) is a beautiful engine.

Ive built so many 350s that its to the point i laugh when people say, pyt an ls in it. Look, put in a mild rv cam. Bump compression up to around 10.5. Port, polish a set of double hummper heads, and increase the stroke. You'll have one seriously strong 350. It will have more drivability than most LS on the road. Smooth torque curve, solid horse power gain. And you will be pulling stumps for days.
i am in the market for a truck and this series just cemented what im gonna get. i have had several cand k 1500s in the past and have kicked myself every time for getting rid of them. i am looking forward to the "Every Man" build. I loved the Fairmont project but its not what most of us can do or afford. cant wait to see how this turns out. Thank Eric

Love the 350 very good motor cheap, reliable, and dont take alot to make it 383 stroker, trust me that truck will be plenty of fun with a 383 in it, I put many 350s in S10s back in the day and did 383 in 2 different silverados short beds sure they wont get you 500 plus in HP but around the 400 to 430hp range is decent plus its a budget build that anyone can do without spending big $$ its your truck have fun and make it yours plus if you go fuel injected it will be rock solid and super reliable turn key anytime
What about a 502 cid ETCG1 ??? Close friend and I put that engine in his 67 vetted that engine is a torque monster!!!!
I like the comparison suggestion. I rebuilt a few 350s back in the day and played around with different carburation and cam combinations. I found that a slightly beefier cam with a stock quadrajet gave me 20 something MPG on the highway and was great for daily driving. I didn't do donuts, but I could bark the tires and that was fine.
In the end, it wasn't about how much gas the car could guzzle, it was about reliability with some power and keeping money in my wallet.
Amen, I also like to keep ford motors in fords, chevy in chevies, buick in buicks. Built tons of chevy small blocks over the years they really were the original "LS".

YYYEEESSS!! Totally agree with you 100%. Got told to put a LS in my nova, so i built a 421 sbc to be different. Yea sbc to be different. Also my daily 95 trans am had a 383 90s era LT1. Which i was also told to buy an ls car. I just like being the underdog i guess.
The LS people are the ones who watch all the video's and might read books on them but i bet very few own one or know how to modify one. The 350 will be fine.
I always hear this being thrown around in the car community, "oh people that say this obviously never had it and they're just fanboys", is that always really true? Or is there some sort of "patting on the back" with that type of comment, making it seem like "it's not a wrong choice, but people are just wrong "
I'm not trying to start anything, honest, I'm just curious because whenever there's an opposing opinion, people always say "oh people that say this is good don't even own one" and I start to question how much truth there is to that.
@@arwlyx I have owned a 5.3 in a 2000 Silverado, a 2010 Camaro SS and 2014 Camaro SS with the 6.2. a 2000 Camaro Z28 which had the LS1. The Camaros were super fun to drive. I won't knock the 350, but my choice will be the LS. The 6.2 already comes stock with 420 plus horse and a standard stock 350 was lucky to break 275. I currently own a truck with the 5.7 hemi, stock rating is 390. Again I won't knock the folks who like nostalgic builds, but I love the modern powertrains. They are even out powering a lot of the big block muscle car engines.
I'm more concerned about a check engine light working properly than power🤔
@@willyck948 you are also talking about a project vehicle, most folks install gauges and if you are doing a project vehicle. not all vehicles in an LS swap, have check engine lights. I can assure you my mom's AMC Gremlin doesn't have a check engine light. It may have 3 sensors at most in it, but you are relying on accurate gauges and giving the age, I highly doubt they are accurate. It has a 258 six cylinder which will remain, because of its reliability and rarity.
@@arwlyx Mike, I have been a mechanic for a very long time and there are good and bad engines out there. The LS series is a great engine but i get tired of everyone who is just a fanboy telling everyone else they know it's true. If you don't like my comment, that's fine. We all have our opinions.
Because you mentioned it in the video, and it was the same engine. I had a '94 C1500 with a 350ci engine throttle body injected, and the power ratings were 210hp and 300 lb-ft of torque, when it was new. Also the engine in that truck was rock solid, I never had a problem with that engine, and I miss the hell out of that truck!
As an engine builder, the V design for the SBC is good but not great. If you're going for high HP, then you'll be putting girdles in the SBC just so it'll survive the abuse! If it's going to be a daily driver, then it'll be fine! The "LS" platform was an absolute marvel in engineering. Hot Rod magazine or Motor Trend did a nice article on the LS engine family. A stock LS engine WILL make north of 1000 HP in stock form before it let's go! The tried and true SBC V design will literally split in half before that if it's not strengthened considerably! Both engines have their limitations! Now where my disagreement lies with this are the ones down playing the LS swaps. My 99 S10 has the 5.3 LM7. I bought the engine/trans for $150, cam and lifters for $450, plug and play wiring harness $916, new driveshaft for $560, and exhaust for less than $200. I have a real fun to drive truck with a dyno proven RWHP of 367. The truck looked completely stock with the 5.3 in there. The 5.3 actually fits better than the 350. Which is why the LS swap so popular. I would keep the 350 in there, since it works just fine. Not to start a war with anyone, but no one should be knocking it just because they read about it or have seen it a lot. It really is a fun swap that's NOT hard at all to do! I could go on a lot longer about the structural differences regarding the 2, but I think it wouldn't do much except draw more criticism. Good luck with the build! 😀
In the Nova community, Alot of people are ditching their carburated SBC for an LS engine! While some of the guys who have already done an LS conversion say that after doing it, they wouldn't go back to 350 with a carburetor, it is ALOT of work to put an LS motor in a platfourm that was originally carburated with an SBC! You have to special motor mounts, special exaust manifolds that will fit an LS motor and clear the steering and suspension on an earlier platform. You have buy a custom gas tank that you can plumb for fuel injection and then plumb it. There is ALOT of electrical work involved in an LS conversion! I'm not knocking the idea of doing an LS conversion, but it is totally understandable if someone like Eric, chooses to stick with a traditional 350 instead!

not every engine has to be 1000hp. its your dads truck. its a thing of beauty. and one day when your dad is no longer with us you will still have his truck.

How nostalgic do you think that will be to have his STOCK engine still in the truck, modified like many have done in his day - and STILL DO?
AND have that low maintenance decent fuel mileage, and reliability at "streetable" power levels?
THAT'S what this build is for. Besides, there's NOTHING wrong with the engine. There's no reason to swap it.

I personally agree with you, the 350 is an awesome platform to start on, they’re stout and can make power as well. My brother use to have a 85 Buick Regal with a 350 in it and that motor was a tank.

I hear you. A lot of people want horsepower numbers, but on a street car, low end power is where the fun is at.

Eric....I could not agree with you more. I like performance STREET cars. Now everyone's definition of a street car is different. Some will say..."well I have a fully caged Nova with slicks and I drive around on the street". Those people are idiots. I built a foxbody mustang last winter by myself in my garage...a 351w with a supercharger. While it makes a ton of power...a daily driver it is not. I probably should've left stock cam and naturally aspirated, but...you live and learn. I applaud your street driven "old school" 350 build. Good on ya! Keep up the great work with the videos looking forward to see the build.
I hear ya. In some ways I wish I had never put a turbo on the Fairmont. I still love the car, but it would have been a lot less hassle and $$ without the turbo.

I kinda love sticking with SBC in my 80's / 90's cars. Everywhere I go I get "LS swap it!" Nah. Not for my purposes. Just picked up a 350 out of a 1986 Corvette to replace the 305 in one of my Trans Ams. Drop in replacement, keep the TPI, no modifications for transmission. Sure, it's still 1980's performance, but honestly, it's FINE for the purpose, which is driving around town and enjoying an old car.
I have 1970 sbc in my olds cutlass with a mild build and it pulls just fine. I am thinking about going fuel injected but I think I just wanna build what I have already. With the aftermarket world really showing what I can do to this old school engine in regards to changing its fuel delivery system. I'm not in a hurry to build a fast car or whatever I'm doing with this 83 cutlass, but I sure love wrenching on it
Put an Ls in it, or a Tesla drivetrain, make it electric, or make it steam powered. What ever you make of it its gonna be great videos. Nothing you can do to your truck apply to my project car, my late fathers 1984 saab 99 with a 4 cylinder singel carb engine. But i still enjoy watching you doing your thing and i am going to follow you fixing your dads truck.
Either way the truck will be awesome can't wait to see you start on it.

Interesting seeing this project getting started now, because LT on PowerNation Truck Tech is also starting an 88 K1500 project with a stock 350. Can't wait to see the different directions each build takes.
I have a 350 motor that was bored out and added internal forge components to turn it into a 383 stroker. It was my father engine that he had in a 69 Camaro Z28. I'd like to find something to put it in. A nice size truck like your dads is awesome!
You do what ever you want to do with that thing, and I'll enjoy watching it. If you settle for just washing it and filling it up with gas, I'd watch that. :-)

You can put a hamster wheel under the hood, and I'd still watch with bated breath. Haters gonna hate. Keep the great content coming and keep being yourself. You said it best...."it's mine and that's what I want in it".
Im an older dude and I certainly appreciate the serious HP and reliability improvements in the modern LS platform, t goes without saying - but like Eric mentioned the old Chevy small blocks were the LS before the LS ever showed up, and Eric feels its more than adequate for this particular project. Theres almost nothing out there with such a wide array of affordable aftermarket parts, not to mention the 50 odd years of development and improvements in HP and reliability behind the old school small block Chevys. The engine has a proven reliable bottom end with a clocked oiling system & its so ubiquitous theres nothing you cant get for it. Numerous cylinder heads, main cap conversions to turn two bolt mains into four, and even aftermarket blocks, and its all pretty much got a proven track record. In fact with modern heads, cams, F.I. intake setups, good exhaust setups they make more hp than ever before, cheaply and reliably. Even a simple single 4 barrel carb'd 383 stroker makes a great and torquey street engine - one can be built so cheap its almost unbelievable. If I sound biased I am, but only because im almost 60 and I grew up with the Chevy small block & have built a few with many still running to this day. Like the LS they have been swapped into virtually everything on wheels, theres even swap kits for Rolls Royces and Jaguars for those who no longer want to deal with the troublesome and very expensive replacement of the stock engines. I saw one limo company in California that had a beautiful old white Rolls Royce silver cloud they rented out for weddings, when the original engine wore out and they found out the cost to replace the RR engine was well over ten grand they ordered up a swap kit, put a nice smooth running small block in it with very quiet mufflers and no one riding in the car knew the difference. They continued to rent it out for years and when repair time came around it was easy to find parts for and dirt cheap to fix and replace. Power wasnt really even a big concern, wedding parties arent drag racing its all about the smooth and quiet Rolls Royce experience, no matter if a quiet little mouse was under the hood pulling it down the road--lol

@Dark Coven I THINK the 454 was an LS. I need to double check. Because I believe the 454 Corvette from 1970 was an LS-type motor. But I'm not 100% certain.

I’m 23, I own two Oldsmobile Cutlass Supremes. I’m doing an engine swap on one of them, I just dropped in a SBC 350 into it. I’m so stoked about it. Can’t wait till it’s done.

I agree with keeping and building the 350.
Ls is truly the great 350 sbc replacement. Factory fuel injection, incredible combustion and head design, 6 bolt mains, and of course they are everywhere. Nothing for the price beats factory fuel injection. I am ecstatic with my 3 lq4 swaps, and 1 ls1 swap. Easy and cheap to build, but I’m still learning the tunes. Like he said, his truck case closed lol. Build whatever you want and have fun, or else why would we be doing this? Ls would be cool to see but maybe in another project. Cool truck, can wait to see the series on it.

Here in Australia they also put a Barra in everything. Very popular here.
The turbo version of the Barra is usually quicker than the LS.
To keep life simple just leave the 350 Chev in it.
An LS swap means you’d have to use all the electronics and wiring too.

Completely respectable to stick with the 350! While your question with drivability on a boosted Ls, I have a turbo truck daily driving and getting roughly 17-19 mpg. Took it on a couple trips already with no problem a/c blasting 😂. Turbo the world
I've pretty damn excited to see what you do with Dad's truck! I'm currently building up my '99 Suburban with the L31 Vortec (5.7 350) and have no intentions of ever changing the motor. I'm thinking either a super reliable 350 with a decent cam and heads or even stroke it out to a 383 and try and sneak by smog with good cats. Bottom line, the 350 is an amazing street engine, even if you aren't throwing crazy heads, cams, intakes etc. at it. I'm glad you're going the same route as me and can't wait to see the results.
I couldn't agree more. I had the same comments with building the 350 in my 90 burban.
The other thing with "Just throw an LS in it" even if you are using a "bolt in" kit nothing ever just drops IN. This truck already has a SB and everything is setup for it. Hoses fit, eletrical works factory, the mounts fit, trans fits, and it just works.
the SB is also a rock solid platform, and still very plentiful.
I agree with you keeping on your truck with the 350 motor and the 350 motors is very reliable been around back in the 60’s. I know for a fact that my Dad’s 1972 Chevy Suburban with 350 motor can’t even hear it running. Great motor!
Eric, you touched on the HP power curve.
My most favorite vehicle didn't make
real power, until about 5000 RPMs. It
was a small 2 stroke street bike. Below
5K, it was quite easy to ride. However,
once the revs went north of 5000, the
HPs tripled! And, it would run at 8K,
all day long.

Special. My fourth RD. Man, I wish I
still had that thing. I found a wrecked
RZ-350, and installed THAT in the Daytona.
I could, with a 150 pound passenger, (I
was 190 at the time) go to 100MPH,
in about 150 feet! I didn't try, but I
think I could have done a 3 digit wheelie.
Yes, 6 gears in the trans, and I used ALL
of them. Power band was from 4500, to
9500 RPM. And, after removing the fuel
tank, folding up the seat, I could lift it
completely off the ground.

Eric, I think a lot of people get caught up on other TH-cam builds they see and don't realize while yes they LS or 2jz swapped a car to make crazy Hp....Most of those are not daily drivers. The 350 can easily make fun HP and not break the bank.
Eric was driving LS when there was no LS at all, that's the case ). I can suggest another example - Fasterproms' Corvette. It was built by the man who passed away many years ago, but that project is great even today.
I think what you're doing is the better way to go for most people. If I had a running vehicle that I wanted to use regularly I would want to slowly build it up. It may be cheaper all together to do and LS swap. But from the point you decide you want to make the vehicle better you need to either have the cash in the bank or start saving for awhile to do everything at once. Then how long to do a complete swap? If you keep your current engine you can do things weekend at a time, a few hundred at a time. You get more fun per dollar over a longer period of time because every weekend you have something a little more fun to test out.

I love LS motors and especially in an OBS, but it's not an easy swap there's a lot of wiring that needs to be done and time to do the swap
I been saying this for so long and I get your point I hate how the answer to every question is "LS SWAP IT" like people don't understand that 350s can still be built and have power and still be streetable etc

I like the "build what you have" idea. Me... I don't have the resources to swap an LS into my little Canyon, plus it needs to be driven on an almost daily basis. So my plan is to improve it as much as possible with only having down for a day or two at a time and in my driveway!
Ever consider a budget build? Junkyard parts such as LS heads, intake manifolds, swapped/bartered performance parts? Something a kid in high school would do on the cheap, true to real life. Regardless, can’t wait for your next episode.

As big of a fan of the LS series as I am, I am fully behind you keeping the old small block chevy in it. You already have the engine, so that's less cost. The 350 has just as much aftermarket for it, can make plenty of horsepower that you will want and is an awesome platform. I can't blame you at all, although I will admit, the technology favors the newer engine, you won't be pushing the limits that far and there is nothing wrong with that.
I like your original idea Eric. Keep it simple, functional, practical and fun. LS swaps are cool but not for everything. 350 is good for this build

Eric, I totally support your use of the old Chevy small block V8.
You could hit 400+ HP with a LQ4 NA with less than 5K done right including everything for the swap. All these old guys on here talking about 383 strokers are the same ones who cant figure out how to work these fancy cell phones. There is no comparison between a 350 and an LS based 5.3 let alone the 6.0

Engine manufacturer and supplier here: Our running joke among us in the office whenever someone asks 'what engine can I use?' - 'PUT A 350 in it!'. Mazda Miata? Put a 350 in it. Jet ski? Put a 350 in it. Lawn mower? PUT A 350 IN IT! :)
My dad's truck is a 1990 step side single cab. 70k miles. If I had the money the e-rod package from Chevy would be awesome. There are a lot of options for that engine though. Convert it to a hydraulic roller cam. Better cylinder heads, better intake manifold. All the old school tricks. If you could find an Edelbrock fuel injection kit second hand that would be cool (new they are not cost effective). Looking forward to your build.

Your rig, your decision. I support you 100% there! I would like to have an LS sometime, but for skill and economy's sake, it might be a while. It's sad to see people getting their undies in a bundle over people putting them in other brands of cars. Not your car, NOT your decision. To me, hot rodding is all about personal expression and doing what works for you.
It is great to keep it with its original engine. So many old trucks and cars loose their identity and originality when the engine is replaced
You have a roller cam 350 maybe even a four bolt crank. If you want cheaper than an after market top end, get some 96-98 vortec heads, beehive valve springs, vortec style duel plane intake with injector bungs, throttle body with idle air control, put walboro 450 in the original tank sending unit, then you can either do a holly efi or go cheap again and get the 0411 ecm from an express van which had a 350 vortec and use the 350 vortec distributor and front cover with crank sensor. Easy 400-420 hp. Maybe more more. Custom ground cam of course. Could be a fun one

Good for you Eric! You'll end up being like the rest of the Car Reality shows in making that move. No imagination in just dropping in an LS. Your builds are for the average guy. And the average guy can't spend $10k or more on an engine when we already have a friggin engine in the car!
