Hi Anthony, thanks for the great channel. Super information for a 1st time Prado owner.
My experiences with the new 1GD (Aug 2020 release) re gearbox.
Like Mike below I have not driven the older models. Gearbox changes for me are smooth. Gears do not kick down unexpectedly. Once the car locks TC in 6th it will hold there at 1500RPM pretty well on highway driving, only kicking down when you give it some decent accelerator. I have found that once I hit 100 kph I need to ease slightly off the accelerator to get the TC to lock in (so some driver input needed at times).
All in all I am pretty happy at this early stage.

Yes it would be interesting to see if Toyota has addressed this in the new 150kw version of the motor.

negative, not addressed as I commented above just before. Fortuner same motor and geabox came delivery 4 weeks ago same same issue. Thats how I found this video as I was wondering if normal or others seeing this issue as well.

Great videos mate. I'm a fan of toyota and the Prado, but it'd be unreal if Toyota did an engine that wasn't either too thirsty like the petrol, or a bit too underpowered like the diesel haha. Imagine the Prado getting the upcoming 3.3L v6 diesel 👌

Yep, I've driven in 40c at 110 and the torque converter temps hit 105c on flat ground with cruise control on. Unfortunately you have to mod these veichles if you're in hilly or hot areas of Aus.

    • @Fourby4Diesel

Mod it by selling it everybody should say no to these engines. They are too small for the vehicle.

I would like to add the converter lockup kit for hilly roads and headwinds. I use the cruise to lock 6th by tapping the cruise speed down once to achieve lock. Then I will sneak back up again on the flat. Slight rises I might tap speed down to prevent unlock. I wouldn’t mind trying a software solution from Geelong performance centre as that addresses the auto and the engine. But that’s an engine map so not so popular on this channel. The latest model Prado has more power and modified gear changes I hear so it would be interesting to hear if we can ever get those improvements added to the current model.

So glad you’ve mentioned this I don’t use cruise on WA OPEN roads at 110-130kph I’ll be buying a lock up kit.

@@beau_de_jour, the road pirates. Used cruise control a lot when I lived in Australia to avoid creeping up over the limit. Don't use it all in places like Germany or the UAE.

I face worst on my 2gd fortuner. Then I delay the "boost signal" ( MAP ) 1 to 2 second on my fortuner. Then the automatic gearbox shifting is ok. No lack of power anymore. Now everything is ok. 👍👍👍
The basic is : the gearbox will change the gear ( shift up ) if the engine achive the minimun rpm and minmun boost. But sometime, because of the egr system, many time the "minimum boost n rpm" donot provide enough power to shift up. So the gearbox shift up and then shift down again because the rpm drop when shift up.

Isuzu DMAX has the exact same 6 speed box. Same issue with the software for the gearbox. always unlocks the torque converter in 5th and 6th gear for the smallest of inclines.

Mate I’ve just come across your video’s and got to say best most informative on TH-cam I’ve found. I’ve got a 2017 Hilux SR5 N80 would you be able to do an EGT/intercooler clean from start to finish? I know you said you don’t do them anymore but there isn’t a single vid on TH-cam on this model. I’ve ordered a provent 200 catch can kit and would love to get my hands dirty and do a clean out before installing.

Yeah even in our 1GD-FTV 2021 Fortuner 6th gear cannot decide. Was driving tonight from Pakenham to Moe and back to drop my son off and 6th gear locking.. unlocking.. slipping - i was like what the? only 2,000km's on the clock, thought I'd pop into the weigh bridge crossed over at 2540kg total no trailer - terrible. Makes me want to rush out to get a scanguage so I can monitor trans temps.. not something you should need to do. It would be software as you say, but even a car that was delivered 1 month ago can confirm issue still is there even with the revised 150kw/500Nm version.

Anyone ever had the problem with the 2016 onwards hilux models where the shifter is hard to shift from park to reverse on a flat road? And when it does shift it makes a loud bang. A friend of mine has a 2021 hilux and it does that. Apparently it happens to alot of the hilux models from 2016 and up.

Anthony, I am sure there is room for improvement, but imagine Toyota Motor Corporation trying to please world markets with their transmission programming. Most of Europe will have 130kph freeway limit. Torque converter will be well and truly will be locked at that speed. Also, my 2019 HiLux pretty much stays locked in 5th towing 1600kg offroad camper on flat surface. All I am saying it would be impossible to factor in all driving conditions for TMC form the Andes to Alaska via Australia. I think they tested it the best they could and went for an average. And when you're right you're right: you shouldn't have to modify your Toyota by buying inferior aftermarket products.

  • @Lotrioni

How can you tell that it’s slipping. And what are the ideal operational behaviours. When you make these sorts of videos it’s helpful to know that not everyone is competent.
And how can you tell the gearbox temperatures?

    • @rrrandommman
      @rrrandommman 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Torque converter unlock is easy to see when driving as the revs will climb but not as dramatically as a gear shift, and he's able to see his transmission temp with the help of a Scan Gauge II on the dash.

Disagree. 1GD is a better engine from engineering point of view. Do you own a 1GD? It is like Toyota would say, let's make a new diesel engine that will be worst than what we've designed some 18 years ago! Toyota went for thermal efficiency with the new engine design.

@@adriankiraly5172 that dosent make it better from a user stand point though. I have had both and prefer the 1KD plus it had more character. The 1GD is a bit of a 'nothing" engine IMO.

Gday Anthony. Love the unbiased vids.
    Can I hijack your thread...
Plenty of questions about the new 150kw 6spd combo ... here goes
Without having driven the superseded one, the new one seems great! I drive on open roads and it only kicks down on decent inclines ... nothing like the ring road shown on the video. I’m also running mild mods (lift and bar). Example... 80km decent hill 2-3% incline 1600rpm no downshift. 100km same same on a slighter gradient.
Engine has a great torque band and new gearbox programming means car is happy to sit low revs.
Put the boot in and it goes fast enough for a 2.7t car. Go easy on it and it’s economical and quiet.

Ahh ok, sorry I'm a bit dense at times, thank you for the reply.
Here's a curly one that Toyota can't seem to figure out on my 2020 Prado, when cruising at 60kmh, no load, flat road in 6th gear, it feels like a petrol engine with a misfire! Jerking back and forth, but I'm certain it's nothing to do with the engine, it's the transmission. Drives me absolutely bonkers. Doesn't do it at 70kmh or over, sometimes really bad at 60 particularly at a slight incline when little acceleration is required. If it drops back to 5th, it disappeares. Reappears in 6th.
Software issue? Still under warranty, had it back at the dealer twice, still doing it.
