You’re really helping me rethink a lot of these themes that got glossed over in my own readings in high school and even in my college world lit class. Will definitely be meditating on the books in a different light when I reread the Odyssey.
A society grows great when old men plant trees in whose shade they shall never sit. I think if we considered this more often that we could become such a society again.
It would be really convenient if we could get a playlist of the Odyssey content to more easily share with friends. It's kind of hard to just point them at the channel and say have fun 😅
When Odysseus called out his real name after blinding Polyphemus it seems to me that he was claiming the ‘glory and fame’ klyos(?) of his act. One of the themes of the Odyssey, it seems to me, is that the era of striving for deathless fame has ended and this is an act of hubris. Hubris whose consequences will plague Odysseus for the next ten years. 5:55
Two books you might look at by Jonathan Shay. Achilles in Viet Nam and Odysseus in America. Deals with ptsd in the epic context. What were told, what we thought, what we expected versus what we did, what we experienced, and what happened back home.
Why does prayer work? I think about that a lot. Consciously delimiting and elucidating one's desires? I think that it might be related to the what they call the collapse of the quantum wave function.

I want one on the Volsung Saga.
I rely on animal signs the most. Today's sign: my house is literally surrounded by does and fawns. Circling the place nearly. Hmm. Family planners?
