  • Part 2 of my tour around the British seaside town of Littlehampton in West Sussex, on the south coast of England, UK.

    • Aerial tour of the sea...
I have mostly concentrated on the old area known as Mewsbrook or the Mewsbrook Estate, where Mewsbook Park is now. I go into detail of the lake in the park and also the old hotel called Rustington Towers Hotel. I have given a lot of information in this which I have found by researching old records, particularly newspaper articles from the time.

This is a link to a PDF file. If you're able to open that, scroll down to page 10 and you'll find a photo of the hotel. It's the only other photo I can find of it. The caption here says it used to be called Mewsbrook House, but as I've explained in the video, I found no evidence it was ever called that:

A note regarding the use of a drone and filming over residential areas, as some of you may understandably be uncomfortable with this. The drone used for all footage was a DJI Mini 3 Pro. In all cases I flew within the laws specified by the CAA airspace regulatory authority and in accordance with the Model Aircraft Article 16 authorisation. I have a current membership to FPV-UK plus a Drone Operator ID and Flyer ID. All flights adhered to safety guidelines and VLOS, and within all rules applicable to a sub-250g unmanned aircraft. This includes being legally able to fly over buildings and other structures and unintentional flight over individual people who are not part of a large gathering. No FTZ (Flight Restriction Zone) was in operation at the time in the areas of flight. I also use common sense and high moral standards regardless of what the law allows. This means I shall not intentionally fly low over buildings, particularly houses or their property such as gardens. I keep as high as I can and also do not point the camera downwards when over private fenced property such as a private garden.

Hi everyone! Here's part 2 of my tour around Littlehampton....Well a small part of the town anyway! It's taken a lot of work to prepare this and I really hope you all enjoy watching and listening. I'll be grateful if you wouldn't mind making a comment please, as that helps the TH-cam algorithm suggest my channel to more people. I hope you're all having a great Weekend! Take care, Geoff.

Wow that was mega facinating. I wish we could briefly turn back time and see how things used to be. Thanks for adding the photo links, amazing how much green space there used to be.
The shelters in Mewsbrook park have always facinated me, I've not seen anything like them elsewhere.

Thanks Val! It all used to be green space with just a few buildings dotted around, plus the odd windmill. I love the history around there.

Good to see where I’ve been. Thought I recognised that cafe but I didn’t, you’d think they’d know what caused the fire. Well done good video

I like the video and commentary. I have detail of this area going back to 1561. It was an area of land in the Manor of Rustington. Mewes.
Mewsbrook House was built by Robert Bushby in 1870 for Mr and Mrs Louis Barnes. It is referred to Mewsbrook House in the old Rustington Censuses. Originally a house with large conservatories growing peaches and grapes; a large stable and yard and the grounds laid out as pleasure gardens.
After the departure of the Barnes's it became the Rustington Towers Hotel.
The hotel was gutted in 1934/5, only two rooms remained on the Eastern side. One of the rooms was opened as a licenced club/ stock room was the room above. The owners wanted to rebuild the hotel but workman were astonished when they bore down and found blue river mud down to a depth of at least 30 feet. So, the plans were abandoned. So, the remaining part was demolished. We use to play in the area in the early 1970's and the floor part still remained. This was just north of the current railway line ( ie the other side of the fence where the path and houses are! It used to be very swampy and we played around the trees, swamp and surrounding cornfields.
The Mewsbrook swamp was a remnant of the old bed of the River Arun as the river used to go in to the sea further east. The river was diverted and deepened quite a few centuries ago.

Thanks for your kind comments, and all that amazing information! That is so interesting. So the hotel border went a little further north than I thought? I've studied maps and various photos very carefully but it's hard to get it 100% precise. Thanks for all that, it's so interesting to me. I'd like to think there maybe SOMEthing still left of the hotel but it seems unlikely now.

@explorewithgeoff Unfortunately nothing left. It all went when they built the Beaumont Estate. You are right it did all belong to Rustington. It still is in the "Parish" of Rustington.Border was where the trees are on the Littlehampton side of the railway line. However, appears to have moved the border in the early 1930's , they also took Rustington Convalescent home, and all the land up to the Henry Avenue roundabout. We did get all bar Mewsbrooks/swimming pool et back in the 1960's. I still consider it as part of our village! I do have lots of photo's of both the Towers Hotel and Mewsbrooks which wete part of Mum and Dad's collection. (They were the official historians of the village). .

What a shame the hotel isn't still there. Strange how there is hardly any information about it. You would've thought there would be news archives, especially when it burnt down. Was it an accident, was it arson or was it an insurance job???🤔
There could more info at the library. Maybe they have old paper articles on Microfiche???
Fab video though giving plenty of food for thought

Thanks for commenting Lotty. Yes it's strange there isn't more info. I did find several mentions in old newspapers but nothing specific about the fire. I have the same questions as you about it. :)
