  • Joining a Golf Club... And GETTING A HANDICAP!? There are so many people who are starting to play golf... and you won't be disappointed... but should you join a golf club? how do you join a golf club? how much is it to join a golf club? in this video. talk about the highs and lows of potentially joining a golf club... but also the new world handicap system has thrown a lot of people... Should you get a handicap? what is a golf handicap? how do you get a handicap in golf? and what is a good golf handicap? now even PGA Golf Pro's like me can get a handicap. So what would my handicap be? you will see other PGA Pro's like Rick Shiels got a handicap, Matt Fryer got a handicap... but what would mine be? the first port of call is buying a golf club membership... so let's start there. and let's do it now!

5 minutes from home, floodlit driving range, putting and short game greens, great pro shop, great teaching facilities, a lovely course which is a good test without being insanely difficult What's not to like? Norwood Park, Notts.

For me as a beginner golfer it came down to 3 main things:
    1. Price (only £400 per year -18 hole course)
    2. Quality, maintenance and enjoyment of the course suitable for a mid-high handicap.
    3. Location. I’d love to be closer than 35 mins to it but to meet up with my brother every week this does make sense.
I’d say that things I’d look for in future would include practice facilities (which my club has decent ones) and membership benefits.
I can’t be the only person who thinks that not being able to get discounted rates on range balls, buggies and visitor green fees feels a little underwhelming, cheap golf aside.

My membership entailed being sponsored by a member, Interview with the committee, 9 holes with the pro and 5 cards for a handicap. Never regretted where I joined.

First nice people, staff and members (recognizing there will always be a few jerks). Management keeps investing in course improvements. A nice variety of holes, some open, some tight, some long, some short, water hazards, trees, etc. A reasonable distance to get there, 20-40 minutes drive time. A fair process for allocation of tee times. A reasonable guest policy. A nice place for a refreshment after a round. Am I asking too much?

As a beginner golfer my main priority is it being quiet; having an audience when you play one or two dozen bad shots just adds more unwelcome pressure. Happily my local 9 hole course is fairly quiet, is cheap to play and in good condition. Competitions aren’t for me as it’s more the social aspect of the game. If you don’t enjoy competitions James don’t bother. You’re almost on a hiding to nothing - people will complain if you do well or you do badly.

it was the price and the course. only a 9 hole course with a driving range toptracker putting greens chipping area and a short 9 hole par 3. it has everything I need. I can walk on most days with no issue joining a group. $225 a month and here in the states just playing weekends I would spend that easily 4 times. now I can play almost every day. it was originally a training facility so all holes are tight. not super long at all but tight iron play is a must. the one par 5 is maybe 490 from the back tees. General plays 465. Day one when I restarted playing (4 years ago) I lost almost 17 balls. i am down to almost none a round with the occasional 2 or 3. THis makes a course I used to play seem easier :)

I would really love to join a club. Let's be real, price is a huge driving factor. Other check boxes that need to be ticked off are a course that is fun to play and does present a good challenge, a decent practice facility with range and practice greens, close to home so that's it's not a burden to get there to use the membership, and good food in the club house. I have a place in mind that ticks a lot of the boxes but just don't have the extra cash to pull the trigger... So public/Muni courses it is!

I took this leap this year got 6 day membership at my local course, returning to golf after 20 years out.
Got back for a year at pay and play courses but got really feed up with slow player who would let you play through, damaged greens who players couldn't care less about and litter, yes litter.. easly fill a shopping bag on my cart over a round. Cans and wrappers.
Pros: Great see a code of conduct, online booking system great just hoop on the app and go!
So far everyone has been great, and it nice to see the top players hit miss shots , lets you see the game in all its dynamics.
    Ooh and getting a handicap.
Cons: None really so far , could be just in the Honeymoon period still..

I joined Woolley Park last year. I live closer to two other courses and tried both those and Woolley a number of times before choosing.
In the end went with Woolley as the team there are so friendly and welcoming. I often bring my 5 year old son down with me and he was always made to feel welcome too which makes a massive difference.

All the things you mention - friendliness, people who you get along with, course well kept (remembering that this takes everyone's help, along with $$), ability to get a tee time, fun comps, a reasonable price, playability for your level.

Let me add something my club does not have - a more family inclusive sports/dining atmosphere, with a pool, dining room (we have a bar/grill), maybe some sports courts - more like a country club. In my area there are some, but not affordable.

For me it is a mix of aspects. 1. Price, some course prices are simply ridiculous. 2. Course and facilities. The course quality is important, but so are the club house, driving range, practice greens etc. 3. The other members. I play golf for enjoyment, I don’t want to be a member of a pompous club, equally I don’t want a free for all where players don’t apply the etiquette of golf.

I have just joined a club as after 40 years of playing socially I wanted to play comp to see how I could go before I got too old to still be able to “play”. I chose this club because it was interesting course with short par 4 (220 meters) long par 3 (200 meters) and no snobs and reasonably relaxed dress code. You must have fun and not take it to seriously.

Don't have enough time to get a membership cos of kids etc, plus I would feel locked in to one course, feel like I'd have to play it at least 75% of the time to make it worth the money. Prefer to be free to play a variety of courses, which is why this new iGolf is very appealing.

I think memberships in the UK / Europe are different than the US. Most Americans (myself included) think join a club is a private membership and very expensive. Most have big initiation fees and expensive dues, food and beverage minimums, guest fees a expensive, etc. A country Club is more of a life style, professional and personal network than anything else. All that is to say I would like something local enough that I play often, hit the practice facilities often, and take advantage of everything that the membership offers. Also some reciprocity to play other private clubs not open to the public would be nice too.

You should join. Especially if your soon-to-be wife takes up the game. My wife and I have been members at two clubs over the years. The latest being 25 yrs (I'm 71 yrs old). I can still break 80 occasionally and I attribute my fitness to 4 times weekly golf. Although just recovered now and back to golfing, my wife's cancer surgeries kept her from playing for almost 3 yrs. During her downtime she encouraged me to golf and even helped me track down lady members who were available so I could continue to play in some of the most popular couples events when she couldn't. She had gotten to know these ladies through our club. Some were widows and some had husbands who couldn't play. Her selflessness and encouragement could only have evolved because she too loved playing in ladies events and loves the game. I know this is long and rambling-but it's the best (personal) reason for couples joining a golf course with compatible peers, that I can think of.

I’ve been a member of a golf course for about 21 years now, it’s reasonable close, and I love the members. If you love to play and compete, they’ve got blitzes five days a week. Three nights a week, we’ve got nine hole shoot outs. How much do you want to play James , that’s the question you have to ask yourself.

Good golf course - not too easy, not too difficult, not too far to travel to. But must have a good reception, bar, and restaurant. Good practice facilities, with accessible coaches could be second level. Finally good competitions well spaced out. What would I leave out? Nothing, because the club that ticks all the boxes would be the one for me. Like the putter brand - never compromise.

I won a scholarship when I was 9 at Woolley and must say always feels like home. I am currently not a member anywhere but I do believe in order to maintain a handicap it's better to be in a club. Its important for me that a club has a decent practice facility as Woolley does also I think pay and play golf is too expensive now so it does tempt you more to join somewhere.

I Live in The United States and am a Member at Hunting Hawk golf course. Has everything you could want and I pay 2,100 a year for unlimited green fees and cart. To pay as you play your looking at 50 bucks during the week days and 60 to 70 on the weekends. And the Beauty is this course is you can play 5,200 from the ladies tees to 7,000 from the tips. Play it as a practice on your short game or a Beast. Not sure How things are in the UK as I'm a bit confused about How often your allowed to play with your membership as some videos they make it seem like you have to sign up way in advance, Here out of 365 days I could play 350 with 14 days closed for Tournaments ( And even then I can go at 6:00am or Late in the day ) and of course closed on Christmas. Kind of a long reply to your comment, I just kind of enjoyed reading yours this morning, God Bless and Keep em in the Short grass.

We have 20 golf courses in our region. I'm on a pension and have a physical disability so price and accessibility are the 2 top reasons. 5kms away we have a top rated course with very good facilities but the fees are 4 times that of my present club. Spoiled for choice so until I'm back to full strength. Join the cheapest and play the others when I can afford it.

It has to be an enjoyable course to play without doubt - but equally it has to be within 20 minutes from where you live in order to allow you to play two rounds a week and also sneak out and play a few holes during the week

Cost is #1. Having said that, I am 100% focused on the practice facility and staff. Quality chipping and pitching practice greens and a putting green that rolls well. The course is important, but, for me it’s more about where I am going to spend most of my time….practicing.

Price\location are the most important things for me. I don’t get the time to play as much golf as I’d want, so a closer course helps with that, but also I can’t justify paying a lot for a course that I won’t play much. But of course it needs to be in good condition, otherwise it’s pointless. Would love to see you playing in club competitions, it would be incredible content.

I was member at Willow Valley before I came out here James.
Loved the challenge of the championship course, loved the craic and banter with the guys post round. Loved playing in the comps.
Loved the fact that my £900 membership gave me access to 50 holes of golf. Loved that Jamie could be a junior member all the way up to 18 years old on the back of my membership.
Genuinely, it's the ONE thing I miss about living in the UK.
Would have been my captains year if we hadn't moved to sunnier climes, and if you ever fancy a knock round there when I eventually get back to the UK, we'd be well up for it. 👌

My golf club has everything I want from a club, good challenging course, very friendly membership, a course you can play all year round (built on sandy base), quite dry in winter as it drains so very well. Not a great big family orientated club due to the fact that we have so few junior members, however open day events and fun days etc are always well attended. Plus it's only 8 minutes away from my home.

Woolley is the first membership I've ever had due to high prices at other local clubs.
The Intermediate membership at Woolley was a genius idea from John et al.
Course is amazing and well maintained, you want challenges which the course offers, friendly staff who always take the time to chat when you're there.
Plenty of options too, with the academy course, driving range, simulator, chipping and putting greens.
Everything you want in a course is at Woolley.

One of the biggest things you should have from a golf club being a member is perks, approachable community and the ability to play and practice within the cost of the membership, at my club I pay for the highest membership but range balls are not included which I feel is pretty poor tbh

As a first time member and a high handicapper the price was the main thing. Our club is on a army barracks and will be shut down at the end of the year. There are 3 other courses in my area and the prices are all about the same. I have been playing the other courses and the best one is the furthest away and in town and the traffic is heavy when I would be playing.🤔🙃🍻

My first criteria when deciding to join a course was 'is this a course I would enjoy playing day after day'? With what you pay for membership and initiation and any other added charge (like a food surcharge), you most likely won't want to pay extra to go elsewhere to play. The amenity package came second, the staff came third and the other members came last as there will be nice folks and there will be others you don't want to associate with (same as any place). Been a member of our course now for 20 years and it's still the right fit for me. And all that talk of handicap is rubbish as I enjoy the playing of the game, not the competitiveness of the game. No handicap establishing for me.

I love the flexi memberships, I play casual golf twice a week and will play the comps if the weather is OK (not 50mph winds and pissing it down).
When looking for a club I like a good clubhouse, practicing facilities, a decent pint🍺 well looked after and well run.
I've been out the game for about 12 years after the recession hit and changing career, child came along and now in a position I can play again (I make golf expensive🤣)
I joined both my local courses, one links and the other lakelands.......I got my handicap two days ago after being a member for 8 weeks, my 3 cards were 89,83 and 81 expecting maybe 12.....but no.....6.9😬

The club I joined has now amalgamated with another, the new club is owned by our old club..... so we are members. The new club is very hilly compared to the one I had joined and therefore not as happy. That being said I am looking at changing clubs, I am looking for a club where everyone is friendly and with good facilities. Price plays and important role too. The main reason I am looking at moving is that it is almost impossible to get a spot at the new club, we were promised that there would be no problem getting on, not so. I think my thinking is. 1: ability to actually get a game 2: cost 3: friendliness 4: course suitability . Sorry about the long background

Been playing for 18 months and enjoy playing a variety of different courses which is helping develop my game. If I joined my local club ( which is a great one) I would be tempted to just play that course, given the high cost of membership - and I would get bored playing the same holes over and over again. If there was a reduced membership fee for say a more limited number of games then that would interest me and be a good compromise.

For me, I know that the course I want to join which actually borders the course I actually did join was not going to work out. Realistically I play more 9 holes than 18 and have a course nearby I can get round in just over 1hr 15. This brings summer rounds pre work / after work into play. As the price is cheap anyway, I can then not think twice about a ‘posh’ round once in a while.

It has full practice facilities and a solid friendly membership and staff. As member, I am able to play 18, 27, 36, 14, 9 etc holes daily without worrying about costs or credits. As a retiree, I really enjoy membership and play over 100 rounds per year, making my cost per round very affordable. Bookings are available 4 weeks in advance to fit my schedule. Membership has many benefits.
James, my only concern about your course from the videos appears to be a very wide forgiving, but unchallenging layout that would bore me quickly.

James can you talk about the benefits of a shorter backswing. Joined a club as a great way to just be able to play more.

    Top video again James.
For me i would love to play more but i moved to Leicester and don't know anyone other then my work mate's. I have one very close mate there and we play at Kilworth springs golf club.
Its very much a links with back 9 lots of water and very long 2 cut ruff but not next to the sea lol i would join but dont have anyone to play golf with.

I like playing different courses and experiencing them. It's great to get to try new places. I've played a few that are nicer than those on my doorstep, the ones that are, are so expensive it puts you off. I get bored playing the same course over and over

I would join a golf course if it had practice facilities outside and also indoor simulators during the winter.

Price 1st but friendly is important. I wouldn't want to be pushed into playing lots of comps either. I want to play when I want without having to be pushed into playing when the club wants me to etc.

I joined a local course. Didn't like that on top of the 3.5k a year they still charge a cart fee every time. Seems all the courses in my area do the same. Absolutely hate it. Plus side is you meet a lot of people and end up having regular playing partners, especially if you join the push cart mafia. The push cart crew sticks together.

Cost is a big factor. Need to get my money's worth. Also depends on my golf buddies. If they don't want to spend lots of money joining a club, then I probably won't do it.

Personally, I think the 'problem' with joining a golf club is that you then feel obliged to play it all the time to get value for money whereas, with 'pay to play', you can play a different course every time

I was a member at a course at the age of 22 then couldn't play and when back to try and join this year and the price difference from 22/25 was an extra £150 and I couldn't justify paying that so I've ended up joining a 9 hole golf course and really enjoying it

Yes Woolley is a great course. However it’s really expensive to join. Will continue pay and play. As a beginner don’t want to tie myself and miss out on other courses although consistent would be great 👍🏻

I'm not big on memberships myself, I like to play different courses throughout the year to have different challenges and varying scenery. If I joined a club I'd feel obligated to play there all the time to get my money's worth and I don't think I'd enjoy it as much. Around here you can join Golf Canada for 50 bucks a year and still track an official handicap, so you don't really need a membership at any one particular club to keep track of your index either.

Golf club memberships are so 100 years ago. Specific course club membership is just for the social aspect which most don't want to pay 800 a year just for that. I would get bored of the course very quickly. I prefer going to many different courses and get better experience. I would much prefer to pay 800$ a year to join one of those partnership programs where many courses are participating in and I can choose from any of them to get discounted rounds and tournaments etc

Do like my Club, not the hardest course on the planet but do like the fact it is relatively good value, the course is 18 holes but can easily be played as a 9 as it is split into 2 via a road. Makes it easy just to stop on way home from work & have a few holes.
Clubhouse rules are fairly relaxed & makes it an inviting place to be whether playing or socialising. Close to home so only around a 5 minute drive away.

I’m looking myself at the moment and for me it’s about a good challenging course, then the facilities like a driving range and practice area as well as a decent putting area. Also needs to be relatively close to where I live. Unfortunately getting all of these together is easier said than done

I only wish I had the time to play to have a membership. Being self employed, it’s 1, hard to find time to play and 2, hard to find time when me and my golf buddy are both available at the same time. Only played 4 times this year. Plus, I like the freedom of playing wherever I choose and not feel I have to play mainly at one club.

The monthly fee to become a member is #1 for me. Second the course is challenging and well maintained. Lastly, the friendliness of the staff. With that being said, JR you should join Wooley Park. You seem to enjoy it.

Never wanted to join a club, much prefer to to be able to play at lots of courses instead,
Always feel that being a member traps you at one course.
Just as a side note, notice that you always look at your club face after some shots, be good to explain why you do it, as it’s a good tip for players to do

For me, Quality of the course and practice area, closeness to my home and then price. I was a member at a club before and it was 20 Miles away and it just took too long to get there. As a result I ended up rarely going except weekends and it wasn't cost effective for $500 a month on average cost.

  • @phmc123
    @phmc123 3 ปีที่แล้ว

For most people it will be cost. We have a lot of nine hole courses where I live and still £500 a year. But the 18 hole ones are £1100+ a year. I pay £15 a round on the local 9 hole which if you play 18 is a par65. so not overly long. To make it worth joining even the £500 a year club I would have to play 33 times. Have managed twice this year. Does the new handicap system still require you to be a member of a golf club? Would be nice to be able to get a handicap but not necessarily be a member of a club. I would rather spend the £500 a year on rounds at different courses and still be able to get a handicap.
